But the action movies of the last two decades haven\u2019t been all bad.<\/p>\n

In fact, in the past few years, action fans have been treated to some of the genre\u2019s all-time greatest entries. Directors like George Miller and Gareth Evans have pioneered a new kind of action movie that\u2019s basically a feature-length action sequence.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Taken (2008)<\/h2>\n

When Liam Neeson shot Taken<\/em>, he expected it to go straight to DVD<\/a>. He only took the job for a vacation in Paris. But Pierre Morel\u2019s thriller ended up reinventing Neeson\u2019s whole career, turning him from a respected dramatic actor to the first star of the \u201cgeriaction\u201d movement.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s something universally relatable about a father\u2019s desperate search for his kidnapped daughter, while Neeson\u2019s particularly skilled ex-CIA agent Bryan Mills is a compelling lead.<\/p>\n

Returning director Christopher McQuarrie brought some of the most explosive, dazzling set pieces in recent memory to life across Fallout<\/em>\u2019s densely packed runtime.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Brawl In Cell Block 99 (2017)<\/h2>\n

S. Craig Zahler\u2019s sophomore directorial effort, ultraviolent neo-noir Brawl in Cell Block 99<\/em>, tells a deceptively simple story that keeps raising the stakes. Vince Vaughn stars as an ex-convict, Bradley Thomas, who\u2019s struggling to hold down a job outside of prison and returns to a life of crime.<\/p>\n

When Bradley gets caught, he\u2019s sent to prison, where a crime boss threatens to kill his wife and unborn child if he doesn\u2019t get himself transferred to another prison and kill a bunch of his gangland rivals. It\u2019s a nail-biter full of brutal violence.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)<\/h2>\n

Quentin Tarantino quickly made a name for himself<\/a> with a string of crime movies in the \u201890s \u2013 Reservoir Dogs<\/em>, Pulp Fiction<\/em>, and Jackie Brown<\/em> \u2013 before trying his hand at an action movie with Kill Bill<\/em>, a blood-spattered two-parter that blends martial arts movies, spaghetti westerns, and blaxploitation films.<\/p>\n

The first part of Kill Bill<\/em> is easily the most action-packed. It opens with a visceral fight scene between the Bride and Vernita Green and culminates in the iconic House of Blue Leaves massacre<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Universal couldn\u2019t leave it alone and there have since been two additional Bourne<\/em> movies.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>The Dark Knight (2008)<\/h2>\n

Christopher Nolan gave the Caped Crusader<\/a> a serviceable origin story in Batman Begins<\/em>, However,\u00a0that was nothing compared to the sequel, The Dark Knight<\/em>, one of the greatest movies ever made.<\/p>\n

With breathtaking action sequences shot on IMAX cameras and a palpable reign of terror courtesy of Heath Ledger\u2019s quintessential incarnation of the Joker (which won the late, great actor a posthumous Academy Award), The Dark Knight<\/em> is one heck of a thrill-ride.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Battle Royale (2000)<\/h2>\n

Although The Hunger Games<\/em>\u00a0used a similar\u00a0premise<\/a> and became more financially successful with it, Battle Royale<\/em> is still the definitive tale of teenagers pitted against each other in a fight to the death.<\/p>\n

As both a satire of the coming-of-age experience and an action-packed thrill-ride, Battle Royale<\/em> is a true masterpiece filled with tension and melodrama. Certain moments can be difficult to watch, and that is the point.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>John Wick (2014)<\/h2>\n

Harking back to French crime movies, Hong Kong action thrillers, Italian spaghetti westerns, and American film noirs, John Wick<\/em> is one of the most visually interesting action movies in recent memory. Following a tactical police squad\u2019s infiltration of a gang-controlled high-rise, Gareth Evans\u2019 The Raid<\/em> is an intense, action-packed ride from start to finish<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The movie stars Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, two of the world\u2019s greatest martial artists, so they spearheaded the fight choreography for the movie themselves. Where most action films are clunkily cut around stunt doubles, in The Raid<\/em>, the actors are their own stunt doubles.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)<\/h2>\n

When George Miller finally got the fourth Mad Max<\/em> movie out of development hell, he cast Tom Hardy in Mel Gibson\u2019s place in the title role. He also used a storyboard instead of a traditional screenplay<\/a> to ensure that the story would be told as visually as possible.<\/p>\n

Essentially a feature-length car chase across a post-apocalyptic wasteland, Fury Road<\/em> keeps the thrills coming<\/a> with mind-boggling practical stunt work.<\/p>\n
