When it comes to a typical Dungeons & Dragons<\/em><\/a> game, players tend to want to face the greatest of foes along their journey. There are some, especially those who are newer to the game, who would rather work their way up to that point. Luckily, there are monsters for all experiences.<\/p>\n

Many monsters with challenge ratings\u00a04 or lower tend to be a lot easier to deal with, but that doesn’t mean these are pushovers either. In fact, a dungeon master has the ability to turn any monster they like into a powerful boss. That said, there are quite a few weak monsters that could\u00a0make great early-game bosses.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Dragon Wyrmling<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

For the newcomers looking for a fair fight against a dragon, there is a collection of dragon wyrmlings for dungeon masters<\/a> to choose from. These dragons are in a stage between being hatched and becoming a young dragon. This doesn’t mean that the wyrmlings\u00a0aren’t tough, as they still have the ability to bite hard at creatures and use their type of breath depending on the dragon. Still, these monsters are not fully developed and a small party could take care of them. Their challenge rating ranges between 2 and 4.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Succubus<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

For a new party, they don’t have to worry about a Succubus dealing massive damage. They just have to avoid being manipulated by one<\/a>. These dark-winged fiends lurk in the ethereal form to whisper things to creatures in their sleep. Their goal is to tempt the creature into doing evil acts, eventually turning into a moral form to tempt them further. While being able to manipulate creatures and potentially drain their health with a kiss, the Succubus also has only 66 hit points and 15 armor points so if players roll well, they can get the job done. The challenge rating is 4.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Water Weird<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Some monsters in the Dungeons & Dragons<\/em><\/a> Monster Manual are neutral by default but do have good and evil variants. The Water Weird, a large elemental guardian, is obviously most dangerous when its evil as it will not only kill things randomly but may also turn against the being that summoned it.<\/p>\n

Despite this, and many resistances, the Water Weird can be taken care of thanks to its low armor class of 13, its boundness to water, and few attacks. It has a challenge rating of 3 and about 58 hit points.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Gnoll Pack Lord<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Despite their ability to tear down entire villages and slaughter populations, the Gnolls aren’t as brutal as it may seem. These feral humanoids were once hyenas that the demon lord Yeenoghu turned into these bloodthirsty creatures. The Gnoll Pack Lord is considered to be the Gnoll who got the most of the good things\u00a0their fellow pack members raided from villages. Because of this, they are a bit stronger than their counterparts. Still, they have a challenge rating of 2, a 15 armor class, and only around 49 hit points.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Peryton<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Dungeons & Dragons<\/em><\/a>\u00a0Monster Manual has quite the collection of strange creatures, including the Peryton. This medium monstrosity has a body like a hawk but the head of a male deer. It also casts a shadow on the ground that is human in nature, despite the fact it wants to eat humanoid creatures. The monster’s melee attacks are generally weak, despite it having a Multiattack. Its dive attack could be brutal, but the party should be able to take care of it considering its 33 hit points and armor class of 13. Its challenge rating is 2.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Ghast<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Ghouls are creatures created by Orcus that live for being around the undead as they feed off of their flesh. Some Ghouls are created with some extra energy and become known as Ghasts. These monsters become leaders of the Ghouls as they are more manipulative than the normal Ghoul. Ghasts are only slightly stronger than Ghouls, however.\u00a0While its presence could boost its allies and poison its enemies, its two main melee attacks are still on the weaker side. It has a challenge rating of 2, an armor class of 13, and about 36 hit points.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Ankheg<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Large insects are probably not ideal for first-time squeamish players, but Ankheg is among the least worrying of the many buglike monsters in Dungeons & Dragons<\/em><\/a>. This monster has many legs that end with sharp hooks that help it dig tunnels deep underground.<\/p>\n

Most times, Ankhegs are alone, so one would not have to worry about a group attack. Because of this, dealing with one Ankheg is manageable as long as the party avoids its acid spray. Its challenge rating is 2. It has an armor class of 14 (11 when prone) and about 39 hit points.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Carrion Crawler<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Speaking of creepy insect-like creatures, a party could take on a Carrion Crawler as part of the perfect end to the first arc. These large monstrosities also enjoy looking for and feasting on carcasses, specifically enjoying the bones. They don’t like anyone around them, so once the party enters their territory, they have to watch out. Despite the ability to smell their targets and climb on ceilings, the creature only has 51 hit points and an armor class of 13 while also having weak biting and tentacle attacks. It has a challenge rating of 2.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Spectator<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Beholder is among the more iconic enemies of Dungeons & Dragons<\/em>, but there is a weaker variant that new players can fight<\/a> if they so choose. The Spectator is summoned by a magical ritual and is used to guard a location or treasure for\u00a0about a century. These creatures are lawful by nature but can be driven mad after years of doing the same thing. It has multiple eye rays it uses to attack and can reflect spells, but it also only has a Strength modifier of -1 and only 39 hit points. The challenge rating is 3 and its armor class is 14.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Gibbering Mouther<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

If players truly want some nightmare fuel<\/a>, the Gibbering Mouther will be their best friend. This medium aberration is the creation of many of the Mouther’s victims over the years. Their mouths and eyes have become a part of the creature. The victims are driven mad by having been consumed that all they can do is consume others. It has plenty of manipulative and paralyzing attacks, but its armor class is only 9 and does not have the strength to\u00a0hand down massive amounts of damage. It has a challenge rating of 2 and about 67 hit points.<\/p>\n
