Co-op in video games, particularly couch co-op, saw a sharp decline when competitive online multiplayer became prevalent in AAA games on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Games like Street Fighter IV<\/em>,\u00a0Call of Duty: Modern Warfare,<\/em>\u00a0and most of the sports genre<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>provided hours of entertainment as players pitted their skills against other players around the world.<\/p>\n

This boom in online competition shafted co-op, as players were seemingly more keen to beat their friends than team up with them. However, the recent PS4<\/a> generation saw a resurgence of the genre, as many of the console’s best games had\u00a0excellent cooperative\u00a0features on offer.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Dragon Age: Inquisition (89)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

BioWare and EA teamed up again in 2014 to release the third main-series entry in the\u00a0Dragon Age<\/em> franchise<\/a>. The game was seen as a return to form in the series, as Dragon Age II<\/em> failed to live up to the\u00a0high standards that\u00a0the modern classic RPG Dragon Age: Origins\u00a0<\/em>set.<\/a>\u00a0Bioware were recognized for their efforts, as the game won\u00a0multiple end of year awards including Game of the Year at The Game Awards<\/a>\u00a0and D.I.C.E awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The game’s co-op mode was a separate feature to the\u00a0single-player. The mode allowed players to join up to three other people to complete levels\u00a0containing increasingly difficult enemies.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Dark Souls III (89)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Dark Souls III<\/em>\u00a0finished the Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>trilogy in style with one of the most critically acclaimed entries in the soulsborne franchise. As would be expected in FromSoftware’s iconic trilogy<\/a>, the game was punishingly difficult.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, players didn’t have to face Dark Souls III<\/em>‘s bosses<\/a> and enemies single-handedly. Through the use of embers, white sign soapstones, and covenants,\u00a0players could summon another person to offer a helping hand.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Titanfall 2 (89)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

EA and Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>released in 2016 to universal praise from fans and critics, but lackluster sales figures. However, following multiple awards and consistent praise from fans, the game has\u00a0maintained a solid player base who have been treated to multiple DLC’s.<\/p>\n

One of these DLC’s, Operation Frontier Shield, added a new co-op mode titled Frontier Defense. The mode pitted a team of players against increasingly difficult waves of enemies.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Monster Hunter: World (90)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Monster Hunter: World<\/em> is the fifth entry into the main series of\u00a0Monster Hunter<\/em>.\u00a0Capcom’s 2018 game was the most critically acclaimed title in the series, evidenced by its impressive Metascore and Game of the Year award at the Japan Game Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Monster Hunter: World\u00a0<\/em>continues the series’ tradition of letting players team-up to complete quests and take down monsters with friends.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Rayman Legends (90)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The release of Rayman Raving Rabbids<\/em> in 2006 seemed to spell the end of Rayman’s days as a platformer<\/a>. That was until 2011 when Ubisoft released the critically acclaimed Rayman Origins,\u00a0<\/em>an excellent game that sparked a small resurgence of side-scrolling platformers.\u00a0The game’s success earned the limbless hero a direct sequel which was met with even higher praise.<\/p>\n

The game’s co-op gameplay comes in the form of Murfy, a helpful greenbottle who assists Rayman in his journey predominantly by interacting with movable objects.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition (90)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Diablo III<\/em>\u00a0was initially released in 2012 and became the fastest-selling PC game of all time<\/a>, with nearly 5 million players\u00a0in its first 24 hours. Two years after its PC release, Diablo III<\/em> came to PS4 in the form of Ultimate Evil Edition<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The hack and slash RPG continued the series’ tradition of allowing\u00a0for PVE co-op. The PS4 version added couch co-op, something that is not available in the PC iteration.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Divinity: Original Sin II – Definitive Edition (92)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Similarly to Diablo III<\/em>,\u00a0Divinity: Original Sin II was\u00a0<\/em>initially released on PC before coming to PS4 at a later date. Critics poured praise onto the RPG upon release, and it notably received a perfect 10 from Gamespot<\/a>, becoming just the 14th game to receive their perfect score.<\/p>\n

Divinity: Original Sin II<\/em>‘s co-op mode\u00a0uses a party system that allows up to four players to team up.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Bloodborne (92)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The second soulsborne game<\/a> on this list, Bloodborne<\/em> released exclusively on the PS4 in 2015. The\u00a0game had many similarities to Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>but differentiated itself with its gothic victorian-era setting and offense centric combat.<\/p>\n

One of the many similarities to Dark Souls<\/em> is the ability to summon other players, which is done in Bloodborne<\/em> by using the Beckoning Bell.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (93)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End<\/em>, much like the rest of the series, is best known for its single-player story. However, Uncharted 2<\/em>, 3,<\/em> and 4\u00a0<\/em>have all offered a surprisingly in-depth online multiplayer mode.<\/p>\n

The online game modes have predominantly been competitive, however, in December 2016 Naughty Dog added a survival mode to Uncharted 4<\/em> that let players team up to take down waves of enemies.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Grand Theft Auto 5 (97)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

One of Grand Theft Auto 5<\/em>‘s many releases was on the PlayStation 4. Similarly to Uncharted<\/em>, the series is best known for its single-player experience. However, an online mode came to GTA 5<\/em> post-release, greatly expanding on the online offering in its predecessor GTA 4<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The online mode has an ever-expanding list of things for players to do, many of which are co-op. Players can team up with a friend to complete heists, missions,\u00a0jobs, and much more.<\/p>\n
