Anyone taking advantage of the deal must have a <strong>Nintendo Switch Online<\/strong> subscription,\u00a0but subscription cost is outweighed by how much players can save on the controllers.<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest draws of the Nintendo Switch Online service is the ability to access some of Nintendo&#8217;s classic games library. As long as players have an active subscription, they can play some of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-switch-online-best-games\/\">Nintendo&#8217;s best NES and SNES games<\/a>, including some never released outside of Japan. Along with these games, Nintendo offers NES controllers that can be charged by sliding them into a docked Switch,\u00a0similar to regular\u00a0Joy-Cons. These controllers are sold only in pairs, and normally cost more than the subscription itself.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-64-games-nintendo-switch-online\/\">10 Nintendo 64 Games We&#8217;d Like To See On Nintendo Switch Online<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>From now until December 3, Switch Online subscribers\u00a0in Europe can get a pair of NES controllers at half price, both UK shoppers and those in mainland Europe. This represents a savings of roughly\u00a025\u00a0pounds in the UK, or 30 Euros elsewhere. Unfortunately, Nintendo of America does not appear to be offering the same deal, which will exclude many of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-switch-online-users\/\">Nintendo Switch Online&#8217;s 26 million subscribers<\/a>\u00a0from taking advantage.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NintendoEurope\/status\/1331963453309935617\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While this deal is good for fans, it is worth noting that the Nintendo Switch Online NES library omits some classic titles. Most notably, an <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fire-emblem-shadow-dragon-localization-japan-december-2020\/\">English version of the first\u00a0<em>Fire Emblem<\/em> game<\/a>\u00a0for NES will be a premium standalone release in December, separate from the NES service. The upcoming\u00a0<em>Fire Emblem<\/em> release will support the NES controller, so at least players will be able to recreate the original\u00a0experience while playing. Still, some find it\u00a0frustrating that\u00a0buying a subscription does not entitle gamers to every NES game the system has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>On a broader scale, even controller discounts might not sell\u00a0fans on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/nintendo-switch-online-deal-worth-more-improve\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">frequently-criticized Nintendo Switch Online service<\/a>. Some of the features the service offers, such as cloud saves, do not work for every game. Many of Nintendo&#8217;s classic\u00a0consoles are also not represented on the service, including anything from the Game Boy library. Given the similarity between the NES controllers and the button layout of a classic Game Boy, the discounted controllers would be a great match for those titles, so it&#8217;s a shame they are unavailable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nintendo Switch Online<\/strong> offers a free seven-day trial for anyone new to the service.\u00a0This gives them the chance to try out some features for themselves, like <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/overwatch-switch-free-play-limited-time-trial\/\">free trials of games such as\u00a0<em>Overwatch<\/em><\/a>, before committing to the service. The amount saved with the NES controller deal is greater than the cost of\u00a0a year&#8217;s\u00a0subscription, which means the\u00a0controller discount effectively pays for itself right away.
