Nintendo, however, has instead sought to\u00a0tamper down on\u00a0mods for their games, most recently with <em><strong>Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Nintendo and the <em>Super Smash Bros. <\/em>community have rarely seen eye-to-eye, especially with a recent controversy surrounding <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-cease-desist-big-house-super-smash-bros\/\">Nintendo&#8217;s issuing of a cease and desist for The Big House<\/a>, a massive online <em>Super Smash Bros. <\/em>tournament featuring <em>Super Smash Bros. Melee<\/em>. This controversy began when Nintendo argued that the use of Slippi, a mod that allows for online play in the GameCube game\u00a0<em>Super Smash Bros. Melee,<\/em> hurt its branding and leaves room for people to pirate Nintendo games. However,\u00a0Nintendo has not offered another way to purchase <em>Super Smash Bros. Melee<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fortnite-leak-mod-support\/\">Fortnite Leaker Claims Mod Support is Coming Soon<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This seemingly harsh treatment of <em>Smash Bros. <\/em>fans has led to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-smash-bros-fans-protesting-big-house-shutdown\/\">many competitive gamers protesting Nintendo&#8217;s actions via Twitter<\/a> with the hashtags &#8220;Free Melee&#8221; and &#8220;Save Smash.&#8221; If that wasn&#8217;t enough to get fans riled up, a <em>Smash Bros.<\/em> modder named AnimalTV has reported on Twitter that a series of YouTube videos have received copyright strikes by Nintendo for showcasing mods using <em>Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em>. A few of these videos contain purely cosmetic mods like adding new skins for Mario, or\u00a0replacing Terry Bogard with\u00a0Goku, yet they have apparently fallen victim to Nintendo&#8217;s strict grasp over its intellectual property.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnimaITV\/status\/1332345250052939777\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These modders do not actively encourage piracy, or even change\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/super-smash-bros\/\">Super Smash Bros Ultimate<\/a><\/em>&#8216;s engine or mechanics in many cases. A lot of mods are cosmetic, and meant for fans to spice up their game with new costumes\u00a0or a new character model. This attempt to control everything related to <em>Super Smash Bros.<\/em> will likely not impact the piracy issue, and may lead to more people resenting the developer for its actions.<\/p>\n<p>One has to wonder what Nintendo is trying to do by clamping down on the fans who, for all intents and purposes, are supporting Nintendo. <em>Super Smash Bros<\/em>. is an important piece of the competitive gaming scene, even so far as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/super-smash-bros-melee-documentary-metagame\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">getting multiple documentaries made about the competitive <em>Melee<\/em> scene<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, fans must keep in mind that the competitive scene is rather small compared to the amount of people playing <em>Smash Bros<\/em>. The protests will likely continue, but it will take a lot more work to put a dent in <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/npd-sales-charts-october-2020-switch-fifa-21\/\">Nintendo&#8217;s continued, massive success<\/a>\u00a0as a developer.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Super Smash Bros.
