Namely, the hedgehog-themed post hints at Microsoft purchasing Sega, owners of the <em>Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em> franchise (among many others).<\/p>\n<p>Even though it is a much smaller company now,\u00a0Sega and its\u00a0Genesis\u00a0console were once the first real competitors to Nintendo in the home console market. The Genesis thrived due to its software, a mix of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-super-nintendo-games-better-sega-genesis\/\">superior versions of multi-platform games<\/a>\u00a0and distinctive first-party games. Many of Sega&#8217;s franchises\u00a0had a decidedly quirky atmosphere, including titles like\u00a0<em>Crazy Taxi<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Space Channel 5<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Ecco the Dolphin<\/em>. In the modern day, Sega is best known for\u00a0<em>Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em> and games created by its subsidiary Atlus, such as the\u00a0<em>Persona<\/em> series.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-game-console-generations-ranked-worst-to-best\/\">Ranking the Video Game Console Generations<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The latest rumors come from an unusual social media post\u00a0from the aforementioned General Manager of Xbox Games Marketing. Greenberg recently\u00a0made an Instagram post depicting\u00a0a hedgehog using an Xbox controller. Of course, this brings to mind Sega&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Sonic the Hedgehog,<\/em>\u00a0suggesting an acquisition.<em>\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/microsofts-bethesda-acquisition-most-expensive\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft&#8217;s\u00a0recent expensive acquisition of ZeniMax<\/a>, which owns Bethesda, showed Microsoft&#8217;s willingness to pay for iconic franchises, and a Sega acquisition could continue the trend. After all, Microsoft has since expressed its desire for more acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IdleSloth84\/status\/1332457016359591936\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft acquiring Sega could help the latter company regain some of its former prominence. Sega has experienced financial troubles in recent years, made worse by the global pandemic. After selling off its arcade business holdings, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sega-salary-employee-cuts\/\">Sega recently\u00a0announced\u00a0a wave of mass layoffs<\/a>\u00a0and salary cuts. Microsoft&#8217;s financial backing could give Sega the chance to revive some of\u00a0the older franchises that it would consider too much of a risk to revive on its own. Plus, Microsoft could help to improve quality control\u00a0for Sega&#8217;s future flagship titles, following lukewarm critical reception for games like\u00a0<em>Sonic Forces<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, Microsoft would stand to gain as well. Making future\u00a0<em>Sonic<\/em> games Xbox console exclusives could help Xbox have a child-friendly mascot to call its own. Plus, Microsoft would own Atlus, which would open the possibility of\u00a0releasing blockbuster titles like future\u00a0<em>Persona<\/em>\u00a0games, typically PlayStation exclusives, on Xbox consoles. This is admittedly an unlikely possibility, given the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ps5-sales-japan-xbox-series-x\/\">Xbox&#8217;s small Japanese audience<\/a>, but it would send a huge jolt through the industry if it did come to pass.<\/p>\n<p>Funnily enough, this\u00a0wouldn&#8217;t be the first time that Microsoft has hosted exclusive Sega games. After discontinuing the Dreamcast console, Sega made several sequels to its Dreamcast games as exclusive titles for the original Xbox. These included sequels to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dreamcast-best-greatest-games-need-remakes\/\">games like\u00a0<em>Jet Set Radio<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Crazy Taxi<\/em><\/a>.
