Announced earlier this year at\u00a0August’s major\u00a0DC FanDome event,\u00a0Gotham Knights <\/em><\/strong>is a\u00a0new Batman<\/em><\/a> game set in a fresh universe. Instead of players taking on the famed caped crusader, they instead will assume the role of the Bat Family, seeing Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Red Hood team up to\u00a0fight back against some of Gotham’s most notorious villains.<\/p>\n

While the footage showed off at DC FanDome mostly highlighted the game’s high-octane combat set-pieces and blockbuster battles, it seems there will be more to WB’s long-awaited\u00a0Batman\u00a0<\/em>game. Speaking in an interview\u00a0on the PlayStation Blog back in September, Gotham Knights<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>creative director\u00a0Patrick Redding highlighted how investigations will work in the game, claiming that players won’t be annihilating all of Gotham’s biggest foes overnight\u00a0this time around.<\/p>\n

“Villain Crimes will play out over multiple nights,” Sony Senior Specialist Gillen McAllister\u00a0summarizes during\u00a0his recap of his interview with Redding, revealing that the director stated there will be “a series of encounters where the player has to do a certain amount of legwork and detective work to hunt down the villain.” That alone completely separates\u00a0Gotham Knights’\u00a0<\/em>pacing from that of the\u00a0Arkham\u00a0<\/em>trilogy, providing players with a detective-focused gameplay loop that culminates with a final confrontation akin to the Mr. Freeze showdown<\/a> highlighted in the title’s gameplay reveal.<\/p>\n

As for why the team decided to focus on this, Redding claimed: “We want to make you feel all that work you\u2019re investing into protecting Gotham City.”\u00a0It seems to be a direct response\u00a0to the\u00a0criticism of\u00a0the Arkham\u00a0<\/em>games (particularly\u00a0Arkham Knight<\/a>),\u00a0<\/em>with fans claiming that the game’s overnight focus\u00a0was incredibly limiting to the experience.<\/p>\n

Many also complained that it was an\u00a0unrealistic format, especially considering each game in the franchise began to grow longer and expanded its roster of side\u00a0content as a result. Hearing that\u00a0Gotham Knights<\/em> will be trying a different approach<\/a> will be sure to appeal to those who weren’t a fan of\u00a0Arkham’s<\/em>\u00a0single-night setting.<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0Gotham Knights\u00a0<\/em>itself, the game has been somewhat divisive online so far<\/a>. Many\u00a0are\u00a0happy to be getting a new game set in the\u00a0Batman\u00a0<\/em>universe, especially considering it will feature the Bat Family and cast the long-requested Court of Owls as the central antagonists. However, others were quick to air their concerns over the game’s seemingly RPG-esque mechanics and\u00a0decision to ditch the\u00a0classic free-flow combat system first pioneered by Rocksteady in\u00a0Arkham Asylum.\u00a0<\/em>It seems Batman\u00a0<\/em>aficionados\u00a0<\/em>will get to find out how successful\u00a0Gotham Knights\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0when it debuts next year.<\/p>\n

Gotham Knights\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>will be coming in 2021, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.<\/p>\n
