Although X-Men<\/em> and Blade<\/em> predated it, Sam Raimi\u2019s Spider-Man<\/em> was the movie that really launched the superhero trend. Since Raimi\u2019s groundbreaking trilogy, the Spider-Man<\/a><\/em> franchise has been rebooted twice, first with Andrew Garfield and then with Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/a>. Plus, Sony has launched its own Spidey franchise with the animated masterpiece Into the Spider-Verse<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Tobey Maguire\u2019s three Spider-Man<\/em> movies, Andrew Garfield\u2019s two Amazing Spider-Man<\/em> movies, Tom Holland\u2019s pair of MCU solo movies (the Avengers<\/em> team-ups don\u2019t count as Spidey movies), and Into the Spider-Verse<\/em> total eight Spider-Man<\/em> movies in the past two decades, with varying quality.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (51%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

After weathering complaints that Spider-Man 3<\/em> had an overstuffed plot with too many villains, Sony went ahead and gave The Amazing Spider-Man 2<\/em> an overstuffed plot with too many villains. Paul Giamatti bookends the movie as a cartoonish incarnation of the Rhino, Dane DeHaan makes James Franco\u2019s Hobgoblin look like one of the all-time greatest comic book movie villains, and Jamie Foxx\u2019s talents are wasted<\/a> with an Electro who\u2019s just an angry, resentful loner with electrical powers.<\/p>\n

At the center of it all is Andrew Garfield\u2019s Peter Parker stalking Gwen Stacy and investigating his parents\u2019 death, as this reboot series made an unnecessary conspiracy out of that.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Spider-Man 3 (62%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Sam Raimi\u2019s Spider-Man 3<\/em> suffered from all kinds of behind-the-scenes problems. Primarily, Raimi didn\u2019t want to include Venom, but Avi Arad forced him to<\/a>. So, the movie has one too many villains and devolves into laughable territory when the symbiote fuses with Peter and turns him into a dancing emo buffoon.<\/p>\n

Still, there are some breathtaking action sequences, like the malfunctioning crane smashing into a skyscraper, and Thomas Haden Church gives a surprisingly heartfelt performance as Flint Marko.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>The Amazing Spider-Man (73%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

After Sam Raimi\u2019s Spider-Man 4<\/em> fell through, Sony retooled some of its story elements for a reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man<\/em>.\u00a0The film\u00a0recast Tobey Maguire with Andrew Garfield<\/a> and retold Spidey\u2019s origin story in almost the same way Raimi did, except with a lot of superfluous details added\u00a0such as a conspiracy surrounding Peter\u2019s parents\u2019 death.<\/p>\n

Following in the footsteps of Batman Begins<\/em>, Marc Webb went for a reboot that was darker and grittier than its predecessors. And following in the footsteps of Man of Steel<\/em> and Fant4stic<\/em>, it was the wrong tone for the chosen property.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Spider-Man (90%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Sam Raimi set the template for superhero origin movies with 2002\u2019s Spider-Man<\/em>. The director\u2019s horror sensibility can be seen when Peter acquires his powers, while his unique sense of humor comes through in any of the movie\u2019s delightfully goofy one-liners.<\/p>\n

While the Green Goblin costume in the movie is a hideous mashup of Power Rangers armor, Willem Dafoe is\u00a0suitably sinister as the villainous Norman Osborn opposite Tobey Maguire\u2019s definitive portrayal of Peter Parker<\/a>.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Spider-Man: Far From Home (91%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Faced with the daunting task of following up the satisfying payoffs of Avengers: Endgame<\/em><\/a>, Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em> brought Spidey to Europe, where he teamed up with Nick Fury (or so he thought) to take on Mysterio.<\/p>\n

Tony Stark\u2019s death looms large over the movie, which grated on fans who don\u2019t like the MCU Spidey\u2019s attachment to Iron Man. Nevertheless, it\u00a0resonated emotionally with those who were still mourning Tony\u2019s death themselves.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%)<\/h2>\n

After the Russo brothers gave Spidey a great introduction into the MCU in Captain America: Civil War<\/em>, Jon Watts was tasked with giving that new incarnation of the character his own movie with Spider-Man: Homecoming<\/em>. Drawing influence from John Hughes\u2019 high school comedies of the \u201880s, Watts gave the MCU\u2019s solo Spider-Man<\/em> series its own style right off the bat.<\/p>\n

Tom Holland more than proved he could carry a movie with his endearing portrayal of a Peter Parker who desperately wants to join the Avengers, while Marisa Tomei made for a lovable Aunt May.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Spider-Man 2 (93%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

After nailing Spidey\u2019s origin story, Sam Raimi made the quintessential Spider-Man<\/em> movie with its sequel, Spider-Man 2<\/em>. At the beginning of the movie, Peter Parker\u2019s double life is hilariously hectic. When Peter loses his powers, it escalates the conflict of the story and forces him to decide whether or not he really is a hero, or if he just got lucky acquiring superpowers.<\/p>\n

Alfred Molina\u2019s Doctor Octopus is one of the greatest supervillains in comic book movie history, with both mustache-twirling villainy and genuine pathos. The subway set piece in Spider-Man 2<\/em> arguably captures Spidey\u2019s characterization better than any other movie moment.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (97%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Just when Spidey fans thought Sony couldn\u2019t possibly handle a satisfying Spider-Man movie, the studio went and made Into the Spider-Verse<\/em>, one of the greatest animated movies of all time. Into the Spider-Verse<\/em> both introduced moviegoers to a new Spider-Man, Miles Morales<\/a>, and established a multiverse filled with alternate Spider-Men (and Spider-Women).<\/p>\n

The movie\u2019s unique animation style<\/a> has the feel of flicking through a comic book, while the voice acting \u2013 particularly by Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, and Hailee Steinfeld \u2013 brings real humanity to cartoon characters.<\/p>\n
