Their most noticeable appearances have been in\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/morrowind\/\">Morrowind<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/oblivion\/\">Oblivion<\/a>,<\/em> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/skyrim\/\"><em>Skyrim<\/em><\/a>, though they have appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elder-scrolls-online-additions-wishlist\/\">other games in the <em>Elder Scrolls<\/em> universe<\/a>. Though, there are many aspects of their origin and purpose that are only ever hinted at vaguely.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Had Different Member Rankings<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Skyrim-Blades.jpeg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Within the organization, there are three main ranks. The first, which all initiates are classified as upon joining, is Knight Brother\/Knight Sister. These individuals make up the bulk of The Blades&#8217; forces.<\/p>\n<p>Next are the Chroniclers, who are responsible for keeping the missions of The Blades secret, but also assure that this information is never lost. Finally, there are Grandmasters; the ones in charge of recruiting new knights.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Used Akaviri Armor &amp; Weapons<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-Elder-Scrolls-Tsaesci.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The Blades are tied quite closely with non-Tamriel sources.\u00a0During the later parts of the First Era, Tamriel was invaded by forces from the eastern continent of Akavir, specifically the snake-people of Tsaesci. The Empire of Cyrodiil was quite small at the time, but they were still able to defeat the Tsaesci. Seeing their might and the potential for an alliance, the emperor of Tamriel at the time, Reman I, granted amnesty to many of these former foes. He gave some individuals prominent positions in court and the military, which benefitted the empire in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>This even resulted in many Akaviri traits, both biological and cultural, being ingrained into the emperor&#8217;s surroundings. This included the armaments of The Blades, who became guardians of the emperor until the end of the Third Era.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Are Referenced By Skyrim&#8217;s Dragon Scale Armor<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/dragon-armor-skyrim.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Although the Akaviri armor worn by The Blades looks much more like samurai attire\u00a0from the real world, there are similarities to parts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/skyrim-armor-weapon-crafting-pro-tips\/\">dragon scale armor that players can craft in\u00a0<em>Skyrim<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To start, the hip and upper leg protection look very close to that of The Blades&#8217; warriors in\u00a0<em>Oblivion<\/em>. As do the guards on the forearms and the abdominal area&#8217;s plating. Furthermore, the helmets are also the kind that covers the entire head, yet have the facial areas open.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Were Formed From The Dragonguard<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/The-Elder-Scrolls-V-Skyrim-Dovakiin-Fighting-Dragon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>During the First Era, when the Tsaesci were invading Tamriel, they tried to do more than subjugate the men and mer of the continent. Upon Akavir, dragons also existed, but many were hunted and tamed by the serpent folk. During their occupation of Tamriel, the Tsaesci brought over those most proficient in dealing with dragons to handle <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/skyrim-dragon-weak-powerful-ranked-video-game\/\">this continent&#8217;s scaly behemoths<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fallout-elder-scrolls-hidden-connections\/\">10 Hidden Connections Between The Elder Scrolls &amp; Fallout Universes<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This group of dragonslayers was The Dragonguard. Sometime after Reman I&#8217;s victory over the invaders, The Dragonguard disbanded during the twilight years of the First Era. However, they were reborn during the Second Era as The Blades, likely reforming as an organization to accompany many pro-Tamriel qualities instead of being a group of foreign dragonslayers.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Were Established During The Second Era<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Elder-Scrolls-Online-Tamriel-Map.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>For context, the events of <em>Skyrim<\/em> take place during the Fourth Era and those of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elder-scrolls-oblivion-spellmaking-for-advanced-players\/\"><em>Oblivion\u00a0<\/em>during the Third Era<\/a>. Being such an old organization means that there is a lot of history and legend woven into the lore of The Blades.<\/p>\n<p>One of\u00a0The Blades&#8217; most significant acts during the Second Era was when they assisted the emperor Tiber Septim during the Battle of Sancre Tor when Cyrodiil&#8217;s forces were combating those of the Nords from Skyrim and the Bretons of High Rock. Cyrodiil came out on top, likely due in part to the assistance from The Blades.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Aided The Nerevarine<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/nerevarine.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>During\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elder-scrolls-morrowind-vs-oblivion-better\/\">the events of\u00a0<em>The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind<\/em><\/a>, the player takes the form of a prisoner at the start of the game. But, over time, The Blades will seek out this prisoner and will realize that they are the prophecized reincarnation of a hero from the First Era known as the &#8220;Nerevarine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Together, the player (as the Nerevarine) and The Blades work together to face the threats facing the province.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Failed An Invasion Of Akavir<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/sky-haven-temple.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Early during the Third Era, under the emperor Uriel Septim V, The Blades were charged with some\u00a0dire duties. The emperor wanted to expand his reach beyond Tamriel and looked to the eastern continent of Akavir. He sent The Blades to gather information about this far away land, which they did, but not very well. They returned to Tamriel with reports indicating the ease of which the land of the Tsaesci could be taken.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elder-scrolls-skyrim-best-standing-stones-ranked\/\">The 13 Standing Stones Of Skyrim, Ranked<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Having no reason to doubt this information, Septim launched an expedition across the sea in order to conquer Akavir by first establishing a foothold in the lands of the Tsaesci, but things when horribly wrong. Not only did the weather devastate much of the invading forces, but the serpent-men of Tsaesci were much more powerful than anticipated and repelled Tamriel&#8217;s forces back into the sea.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Parted Ways With The Emperors<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/TES-4-Oblivion-No-Sense-6-Emperor-Uriel-Septim-VII-in-TES-4.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>During the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/elder-scrolls-oblivion-things-make-no-sense\/\">cataclysmic events at the end of\u00a0<em>Oblivion<\/em><\/a>, the line of emperors was shattered. The Blades were formed during the reign of Tiber Septim and served every Septim to ascend to the throne since the Second Era. However, as Martin Septim perished during his epic battle with the Daedric Prince Mehrunes Dagon, this bloodline came to an end; as did the Third Era.<\/p>\n<p>With no more Septim emperors to serve, The Blades stopped\u00a0aiding the rulers of Tamriel at the end of this era in favor of returning to their dragon-slaying ways of old.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Make Potions From Dragon Remains<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Skyrim-Potions.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Following the discovery of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-elder-scrolls-bosses-ranked\/\">Alduin&#8217;s Wall and a few other important main quests<\/a>, the Dragonborn can start a new one when speaking with The Blades scholar Esbern in Sky Haven Temple <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/skyrim-reach-secret-unmarked-locations\/\">in The Reach<\/a>. The elder will ask the player to acquire a dragon scale and a dragon bone for a unique and powerful potion.<\/p>\n<p>Upon returning with the ingredients, Esbern will concoct a special draught that gives the Dragonborn 25% resistance against the mighty melee attacks of all dragons.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Appear In Their Own Game<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/elder-scrolls-blades-wallpaper-art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>In a strange marketing choice,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/bethesda\/\">Bethesda<\/a>\u00a0decided to make <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-elder-scrolls-blades\/\"><em>The Elder Scrolls: Blades<\/em><\/a>\u00a0almost exclusive to mobile devices. While it has also appeared on consoles via VR as well as being released on the\u00a0Nintendo Switch, <em>Blades\u00a0<\/em>has not had a wide release like many other\u00a0<em>Elder Scrolls<\/em> games.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, fans of the series did not give this entry too much attention.
