Ever since the groundbreaking success of Shirley Bassey\u2019s Goldfinger<\/em> theme song, every movie in the James Bond franchise<\/a> has featured an original theme by a contemporary pop artist over the opening credits (except for On Her Majesty\u2019s Secret Service<\/em>, which had a John Barry composition over the opening titles and a love theme in the middle of the movie).<\/p>\n

Some of these themes have become iconic, topping the charts upon release and remaining popular to this day, while others have been dreadful, hated on their movie\u2019s opening weekend and then forgotten instantly. So, we\u2019ve ranked all the Bond themes from worst to best.<\/p>\n

22 <\/span>\u201cDie Another Day\u201d By Madonna<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Madonna is one of the most popular artists in the world, but she really dropped the ball when she was tapped to record a theme song for Die Another Day<\/em>. This could\u2019ve been Madonna\u2019s comeback vehicle, but she squandered the opportunity by churning out a generic dance song with auto-tuned vocals, nonsensical lyrics, and no connection whatsoever to James Bond.<\/p>\n

21 <\/span>\u201cThe Man With The Golden Gun\u201d By Lulu<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Bond composer John Barry has confessed that Lulu\u2019s theme song for The Man with the Golden Gun<\/em> is his least favorite of all the Bond themes. Bond themes have always contained double entendres, but Lulu\u2019s track is pretty on-the-nose about its focus on 007\u2019s, ahem, golden gun.<\/p>\n

20 <\/span>\u201cThunderball\u201d By Tom Jones<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

In theory, Tom Jones is a great fit for a Bond theme, and if he\u2019d been recruited a few movies later, he probably could\u2019ve delivered a great one. After the success of Shirley Bassey\u2019s Goldfinger<\/em> theme, the 007 producers decided to hire a popular singer to sing an original theme for every subsequent movie.<\/p>\n

But before they realized the key to making that work was letting the singer marry their own style with the Bond style, the producers tapped Tom Jones to play it safe with a Shirley Bassey-esque track for Thunderball<\/em>, which didn\u2019t work at all.<\/p>\n

19 <\/span>\u201cWriting\u2019s On The Wall\u201d By Sam Smith (From Spectre)<\/h2>\n

When Sam Smith was hired to sing a theme song for the Daniel Craig Bond outing Spectre<\/em><\/a>, he didn\u2019t come up with a Bond theme in the Sam Smith style; he just came up with a generic Sam Smith song. \u201cWriting\u2019s on the Wall\u201d sounds nothing like a Bond theme and its lyrics have nothing to do with the movie\u2019s admittedly muddled plot.<\/p>\n

18 <\/span>\u201cThe Living Daylights\u201d By A-Ha<\/h2>\n

The flashy synths in A-Ha\u2019s theme song for The Living Daylights<\/em> felt wildly out of place in a Bond movie, especially Timothy Dalton\u2019s first outing as 007, which marked a shift toward a darker, edgier tone<\/a>.<\/p>\n

17 <\/span>\u201cTomorrow Never Dies\u201d By Sheryl Crow<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

When it was announced that Sheryl Crow would sing the theme for Pierce Brosnan\u2019s second outing as 007, she was deemed an odd choice for a Bond theme. These doubts turned out to be\u00a0well-placed when Crow turned out a dreary, instantly forgettable track.<\/p>\n

16 <\/span>\u201cAnother Way To Die\u201d By Jack White And Alicia Keys (From Quantum Of Solace)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Jack White and Alicia Keys joined forces to give Quantum of Solace<\/em> its theme song, \u201cAnother Way to Die.\u201d It\u2019s a catchy rock tune, but like the movie it\u2019s attached to, it\u2019s pretty generic compared to the franchise\u2019s finest offerings.<\/p>\n

15 <\/span>\u201cFor Your Eyes Only\u201d By Sheena Easton<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

While it\u2019s not as unbearable as the absolute worst Bond themes, Sheena Easton\u2019s For Your Eyes Only<\/em> theme doesn\u2019t come close to scraping the heights of the greats. It\u2019s just a regular Sheena Easton song; it even borders on sounding like a spoof of a Sheena Easton song.<\/p>\n

14 <\/span>\u201cMoonraker\u201d By Shirley Bassey<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Shirley Bassey experienced the inverse of \u201cthird time lucky\u201d with her Bond theme history. After recording two of the franchise\u2019s greatest theme songs, she sang a third one for Moonraker<\/em> that sorely lacked the previous tracks\u2019 oomph and staying power.<\/p>\n

13 <\/span>\u201cA View To A Kill\u201d By Duran Duran<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Although A View to a Kill<\/em> is one of the worst Bond movies on the whole, it has a pretty great theme by Duran Duran. \u201cA View to a Kill\u201d is pure \u201880s-era new wave, but hasn\u2019t aged as badly as the rest of the genre.<\/p>\n

12 <\/span>\u201cAll Time High\u201d By Rita Coolidge (From Octopussy)<\/h2>\n

With all the gloss and sheen of the \u201880s (widely regarded to be one of the worst eras for the Bond franchise), Rita Coolidge\u2019s \u201cAll Time High\u201d from Octopussy<\/em> achieves the admittedly easy task of being more memorable than the movie itself.<\/p>\n

11 <\/span>\u201cYou Know My Name\u201d By Chris Cornell (From Casino Royale)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Chris Cornell\u2019s theme song for Casino Royale<\/em> proved that a musician\u2019s chosen genre doesn\u2019t have to affect their ability to come up with a good Bond theme. With \u201cYou Know My Name,\u201d Cornell made his \u201890s grunge style work wonders for Martin Campbell\u2019s gritty reboot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>\u201cGoldenEye\u201d By Tina Turner<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Written by U2\u2019s Bono and The Edge, the GoldenEye<\/em> theme sung by Tina Turner was the perfect track to kick off Pierce Brosnan\u2019s bold first adventure in the role of 007<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Bond themes of the \u201880s fell into the glossy trappings of a lot of the worst music of that decade, so it was a breath of fresh air when Gladys Knight brought a \u201860s-style edge to the theme for Licence to Kill<\/em>.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>\u201cNo Time To Die\u201d By Billie Eilish<\/h2>\n

It won\u2019t be clear how well Billie Eilish\u2019s theme song pairs with No Time to Die<\/em> until the movie can finally be released<\/a>, but just based on the track itself, it\u2019s one heck of a contribution to the Bond theme oeuvre \u2013 especially considering, at 18 years old, Eilish became the youngest ever performer to record a theme song for the franchise.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>\u201cThe World Is Not Enough\u201d By Garbage<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Garbage seemed like a strange choice for a James Bond theme when they were hired to record a theme for The World is Not Enough<\/em>, but the song they created is now consistently ranked as one of the best in the franchise.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>\u201cYou Only Live Twice\u201d By Nancy Sinatra<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

While the movie You Only Live Twice<\/em> is nothing to write home about due to its flimsy plotting (screenwriter Roald Dahl said that source material read more like a travelogue than a novel), Nancy Sinatra\u2019s melancholic theme \u201cYou Only Live Twice\u201d is one of the all-time best.<\/p>\n

Shirley Bassey\u2019s best Bond theme will always be \u201cGoldfinger,\u201d but her theme from Diamonds Are Forever<\/em> is a close second. Apparently, in the studio, John Barry told Bassey to imagine she was singing about a penis.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>\u201cSkyfall\u201d By Adele<\/h2>\n

Adele\u2019s chart-topping theme for Skyfall<\/em> was the first Bond theme to win a bunch of different accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and it deserves all the praise<\/a>. It\u2019s distinctly an Adele song, but the orchestrations are beautifully Bond-ian.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>\u201cNobody Does It Better\u201d By Carly Simon (From The Spy Who Loved Me)<\/h2>\n

At the end of one of the James Bond franchise\u2019s most breathtaking opening set pieces, as 007 skis off the edge of a cliff and deploys a Union Jack parachute, Carly Simon\u2019s \u201cNobody Does It Better\u201d kicks in. In addition to being one of the greatest Bond movies, The Spy Who Loved Me<\/em> has one of the series\u2019 most memorable theme songs.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>\u201cLive And Let Die\u201d By Paul McCartney & Wings<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Paul McCartney took the assignment of writing the theme for Live and Let Die<\/em> as a job. He didn\u2019t view it as a passion project and he hashed out the lyrics in an afternoon. But since this is Paul McCartney, one of the greatest musicians who ever lived, the result is one of the most iconic and endearing Bond themes in the franchise\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

The third Bond movie, Goldfinger<\/em>, established the franchise\u2019s formula: an opening action sequence, a one-off love interest, a megalomaniacal villain, a globetrotting plot etc. So, it\u2019s fitting that the movie also has the Bond theme that set the tone for all to come, and remains the greatest, sung by the legendary Shirley Bassey.<\/p>\n
