However, seemingly out of nowhere, Sony has opted to release a brand new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-last-of-us-2\/\"><em>Last of Us 2<\/em><\/a> story trailer, with this one from Abby&#8217;s perspective. Please note that those that have yet to play through\u00a0<em>The Last of Us 2<\/em> may get some\u00a0<strong>SPOILERS<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>from the trailer, so proceed with caution.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Last of Us 2<\/em> Abby story trailer starts with her witnessing her father&#8217;s death at the hands of Joel, which took place at the end of the first\u00a0<em>Last of Us<\/em> game. It then fast-forwards to the events of\u00a0<em>The Last of Us 2<\/em>, framing <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-last-of-us-2-abby-story-dad-doctor\/\">Abby&#8217;s quest for revenge<\/a> in a more sympathetic light. Those that have yet to play through\u00a0<em>The Last of Us 2<\/em> themselves may be confused by this, but those that have already gotten at least halfway through the game will know exactly why the trailer does this.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-game-awards-eddie-vedder-pearl-jam\/\">Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam is Performing at The Game Awards<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>About halfway through\u00a0<em>The Last of Us 2<\/em>, players take control of Abby, and play as her for a large portion of the game. The <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/last-of-us-2-abby-who-joel-trans\/\">Abby gameplay segment in\u00a0<em>The Last of Us 2<\/em><\/a> has been a point of controversy for fans, but others have praised it for effectively humanizing the &#8220;bad&#8221; people in the story, and showing how characters like Ellie and Joel are not necessarily in the &#8220;right.&#8221; Others, however, disliked having to play as a character that they didn&#8217;t like, and have criticized the game for spending so much time away from the established cast of characters.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8x3QL0gQQRU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While playing as Abby has been a touchy subject since\u00a0<em>The Last of Us 2<\/em> launched, her trailer is so far not being bombarded by angry fans. While there are plenty of mean and sarcastic comments on the video, there are also many positive or lighthearted ones. The trailer also has 7.7k likes at the time of this writing, versus 2.5k dislikes, so it seems that some of the intense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/the-last-of-us-2-hated-abby-ellie\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abby hate<\/a> has died down at this point.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Last of Us 2<\/em> Abby hate was pretty extreme around the time of the game&#8217;s release, and even before it launched. A massive\u00a0<em>Last of Us 2<\/em> leak saw major story developments leak online, including a certain act by Abby that left fans in an uproar. It&#8217;s hard to say if fans would have responded better to the character had they not known what she was going to do ahead of time, and unfortunately, we&#8217;ll never know. Regardless, some fans directed their anger towards <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/last-of-us-2-abby-laura-bailey-death-threats\/\">Abby&#8217;s voice actor<\/a> as well as Naughty Dog developers, sending hateful messages and even death threats.<\/p>\n<p>Considering how controversial Abby has been, it&#8217;s unclear why Sony decided to release this new trailer.
