Not every release has been quite so successful though.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ranking-the-top-ten-best-selling-switch-games\/\">Ranking the Top Ten Best Selling Switch Games<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As solid as the Switch library is, there are plenty of titles that have failed to make the grade. 2020 has seen its fair share of these games, with many of them failing to impress either critics or players. Much of this is the result of Nintendo encouraging indie developers to release their games on the system which, in some ways, is watering down the overall standard.\u00a0There are certainly a few gems hidden amongst the rough, but many lack the polish to shine anywhere near as brightly as the system&#8217;s big-hitters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disclaimer:\u00a0<\/strong>Only games that have received a sufficient number of reviews to appear on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/browse\/games\/score\/metascore\/year\/switch\/filtered?page=2\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Metacritic&#8217;s Nintendo Switch 2020 releases page<\/a> will be considered.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Last Encounter (52)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/swi-last-encounter.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>When it comes to visuals,\u00a0<em>Last Encounter<\/em> is a good looking game, especially considering its low price. Unfortunately, the gameplay doesn&#8217;t offer anywhere near enough variety to keep players engaged for the full duration. It starts out exciting enough, but that excitement quickly dissipates leaving behind the musty odor of stale gameplay.<\/p>\n<p>Those that love a challenge will certainly find one here, although the mediocre enemy AI can quite often cheapen the experience.\u00a0Some critics did respond positively to\u00a0the game&#8217;s frantic gameplay, but most were less than impressed with\u00a0what <em>Last Encounter<\/em> has to offer.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia (52)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/swi-bakugon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>For a full-price release,\u00a0<em>Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia<\/em>\u00a0leaves a lot to be desired. Granted, it released very recently and subsequent updates could improve the experience. Right now though, it&#8217;s a weak effort. Action RPGs are a dime a dozen these days and so\u00a0games really need to have something about\u00a0them\u00a0in order to stand out from the crowd.\u00a0This one does not.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-action-rpgs-nintendo-switch-games\/\">The 10 Best Action-RPGs On The Nintendo Switch<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Given its similarities to <em>Pok\u00e9mon<\/em>, <em>Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia<\/em> was always going to struggle to measure up, but it really doesn&#8217;t do itself any favors. Some of the ideas aren&#8217;t bad, but the execution is incredibly poor throughout which can make for a tiresome experience. Fans of the anime may well like it, as too might fans of <em>Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> who are looking for something new to play after wrapping up <em>The\u00a0Crown Tundra<\/em> DLC. For everybody else, however, this one is a hard miss.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Jump Force: Deluxe Edition (51)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/swi-jump-force.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/jump-force\/\">Jump Force: Deluxe Edition<\/a><\/em> offers over 50 playable characters and yet\u00a0it just barely managed a Metascore over the halfway mark. Critics slated the game for its simplicity and its failure to offer anything more than an inferior, albeit portable, version of the game.<\/p>\n<p>Neither the PS4 nor the Xbox One versions performed much better, scoring 56 and 61 respectively. The user response to the Switch port was a bit more positive though. After 16 ratings, <em>Jump Force: Deluxe Edition\u00a0<\/em>has a User Score of 7.3, suggesting that it&#8217;s not quite as bad as it might first appear.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>PONG Quest (47)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/swi-pong-quest.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/pong\/\">Pong<\/a><\/em> is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/longest-running-video-game-franchises-how-many-games\/\">longest-running series in gaming<\/a>, and the fact Atari is still showing the franchise love\u00a0nearly 50 years after the original first hit arcades is admirable. It&#8217;s safe to say,\u00a0the company has definitely\u00a0seen a healthy return on\u00a0the original game&#8217;s development costs. Unfortunately,\u00a0it&#8217;s unlikely they&#8217;ll be making too much from\u00a0<em>PONG Quest<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The game combines the classic <em>Pong<\/em> formula with\u00a0RPG and Adventure elements which, on paper at least, should work together quite well. Unfortunately, they just don&#8217;t. It feels more like a mobile game than something one would expect to find on consoles and, as such, its low price does not excuse its mediocrity. <em>Pong Quest<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0Metascore of 47 is a generous one that&#8217;s greatly inflated by a 71 rating from one critic.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Cooking Mama: Cookstar (46)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/swi-cooking-mama.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Previous <em>Cooking Mama<\/em> titles have typically performed quite well on Metacritic, but <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/cooking-mama-cookstar\/\"><em>Cooking Mama: Cookstar<\/em><\/a> wasn&#8217;t so fortunate. Its 46 Metascore is by far the lowest in the series, and rightfully so. There&#8217;s very little innovation to be found and the motion controls are poorly implemented. The voice acting is atrocious too, but, worst of all, the game is incredibly boring.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the step up in power from the 3DS to the Switch, this should have been a much better game. Not only did the developers fail to utilize the power of the new machine, but they also struggled to nail the fundamentals. Fans of the series seemed to enjoy <em>Cookstar\u00a0<\/em>nonetheless, at least if the User Score is anything to go by. For everybody else though, <em>Cookstar<\/em> will likely prove to be far too undercooked.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Make War (46)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/swi-make-war.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Make War<\/em> is an ambitious indie strategy game with a very likable art style. Its gameplay offers plenty of innovation, but the way it&#8217;s all put together can at times make\u00a0for a monotonous experience. This isn&#8217;t helped by\u00a0an ill-conceived interface and a frustrating cursor. Ultimately, it&#8217;s a game that is perhaps too ambitious for the size of its development team.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/strategy-games-ported-consoles\/\">5 Strategy Games We Wish Were Ported To Consoles (&amp; 5 That Can&#8217;t Be)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To No Gravity Games&#8217; defense, the PC version of the game does play a lot better. This will offer little comfort though to those who shelled out $10 to play it on the Switch. Granted, it&#8217;s not a huge amount, but, given the huge variety of low-priced indie games on the market, it&#8217;s\u00a0$10 that could have been much better spent elsewhere.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>The Elder Scrolls: Blades (42)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/swi-elder-scrolls.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>For those who love repetitive and grindy gameplay,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-elder-scrolls-blades\/\"><em>The Elder Scrolls: Blades<\/em><\/a> might prove enjoyable. For everybody else, however, it&#8217;s a game that&#8217;s best left well alone. <em>Blades\u00a0<\/em>is, at its heart, a mobile game that was ported to the Switch more than a year after its IOS debut. While\u00a0it&#8217;s definitely a lot more palatable when played in\u00a0short\u00a0bursts, for a home console release, <em>Blades\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0just far too repetitive.<\/p>\n<p>Players have come to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-vs-worse-bethesda-games-metacritic\/\">expect a lot more from big developers like Bethesda<\/a>, not to mention huge IPs like <em>The Elder Scrolls<\/em>. It is perhaps these names that saved the game from an even weaker Metascore. Unfortunately, players were not so generous, as\u00a0<em>Blades\u00a0<\/em>currently has a User Score of just 2.8 based on 58 user ratings.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Gleamlight (42)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/swi-gleamlight.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>There have been some <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-mario-world-vs-donkey-kong-best-snes-platformer\/\">incredible 2D platformers<\/a> over the years. <em>Gleamlight<\/em> ain&#8217;t one of &#8217;em. What makes this so frustrating is that the game&#8217;s presentation is beautiful. Unfortunately, it&#8217;s a game that&#8217;s massively let down by its gameplay. It&#8217;s very short\u00a0and, at times, incredibly dull.<\/p>\n<p>Its ideas and features aren&#8217;t at all bad, but they can at times feel a little half-baked. As a result, <em>Gleamlight<\/em>\u00a0feels like a game that could have really done with more time in the oven. Although some critics were a bit more forgiving of its flaws, its User Score paints a far bleaker picture. After 8 ratings, <em>Gleamlight<\/em>\u00a0currently sits on a 2 rating.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Arc Of Alchemist (36)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/swi-arc-of-alchemist.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Action RPGs typically <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/rpgs-nineties-long-main-stories\/\">demand a lot of the player&#8217;s time<\/a>. As a result, crafting an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ps4-games-compelling-narratives\/\">engaging narrative to draw the player in<\/a> is something of a necessity for those hoping to find success in the genre.\u00a0<em>Arc of Alchemist<\/em> falls spectacularly at this hurdle. Its plot is nonsensical and mundane in equal measures, with the characters struggling to string together coherent sentences more often than not.<\/p>\n<p>Given that the game was developed in Japan, this is likely a result of poor localization. Regardless though,\u00a0for a full-price release, it is unacceptable. Those able to move past the game&#8217;s awful story will likely struggle to come to terms with its\u00a0bland visuals. The graphics, like the game itself, would be more <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ps1-playstation-best-worst-games-metacritic\/\">at home on the PS1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Tiny Racer (29)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/swi-tiny-racer.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The worst game on the Switch in 2020 is, surprisingly, not actually a bad game. To be clear, it&#8217;s not <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-racing-games-ever-made-according-metacritic\/\">the Mona Lisa of racing games<\/a> or anything. Far from it. It is however a lot better than its 29 Metascore would suggest. It&#8217;s not without its flaws, but, for the most part, <em>Tiny Racer<\/em> provides an enjoyable racing experience that works well in small, bite-sized chunks.<\/p>\n<p><em>Tiny Racer\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0fairly reminiscent of the classic Micromachines games and something that both younger and older players should be able to pick up fairly easily. The physics can be a little frustrating at times and the developers&#8217; decision not to allow car-to-car contact is a little baffling.
