However, when a giant developer like Nintendo treats the esports scenes of some of its most popular and competitive titles like\u00a0<strong><em>Splatoon 2<\/em><\/strong> and\u00a0<em>Super Smash Bros.<\/em><em> Melee\u00a0<\/em>poorly, fans take notice.<\/p>\n<p>This is exactly what happened during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/splatoon-2\/\"><em>Splatoon 2<\/em><\/a> North American Open December 2020, when Nintendo canceled the stream of the Finals for the tournament due to player protests. As a result, fans of the developer have begun throwing a massive wave of backlash back at Nintendo, calling out the company for not only failing to support a popular competitive scene, but also actively attempting to shut it down.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/jet-set-radio-music-composer-tried-get-hired-nintendo-repeatedly\/\">Jet Set Radio Music Composer Tried to Get Hired By Nintendo Repeatedly<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The recent cancellation starts with a Cease and Desist order issued to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-cease-desist-big-house-super-smash-bros\/\"><em>Super Smash Bros<\/em>. event organizer Big House<\/a> on November 19th, shutting down a planned tournament due to the use of a program called Slippi. This order was issued because Slippi runs via a ROM as opposed to an official copy of the game, which puts the program&#8217;s use to play\u00a0<em>Super Smash Bros. Melee<\/em> online for the tournament in a grey area. Fans of the\u00a0<em>Super Smash<\/em> series initially began voicing their displeasure for the decision, using &#8220;#FreeMelee&#8221; as a rallying cry against Nintendo&#8217;s treatment of the IP.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SlimyQuagsire\/status\/1335354088968630274\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These divisive decisions by Nintendo have now led a number of fans to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-smash-bros-fans-protesting-big-house-shutdown\/\">continue the #FreeMelee backlash<\/a> on the company&#8217;s announcements regarding the upcoming\u00a0<em>Splatoon 2<\/em>\u00a0event. This has turned into multiple teams and players registering with names that are in support of both the Slippi program and the\u00a0<em>Super Smash Bros.<\/em> competitive scene. Now Nintendo has announced that the livestream of the Finals will be canceled, bringing fans of both\u00a0<em>Splatoon<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Super Smash<\/em> together to heighten the backlash against the developer for the lack of support of third-party organizers and developers.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brymeegs\/status\/1331327340228595714\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Hitzel89\/status\/1331317360205197312\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a fine line that Nintendo has been forced to walk here, as the company wants to protect its IP from pirates and cheaters, choosing to take a no-tolerance stance on any third party involvement. As a result, players lash out about how far this no-tolerance policy goes\u00a0from\u00a0canceling this\u00a0<em>Splatoon 2<\/em> event,\u00a0to shut down third party\u00a0<em>Super Smash Bros.<\/em> tournaments.
