FromSoftware’s Dark Souls<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>trilogy began in 2011 with little marketing and fanfare before its release and ended in 2016 as one of the most beloved and influential sets of games in the 21st century. Dark Souls 3<\/em><\/a> showed how far the series had come, as the game was one of the year’s most talked-about and highly anticipated releases of 2016. It didn’t disappoint either, scoring 89 on Metacritic<\/a> and winning the Golden Joystick Award for Ultimate Game of the Year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The hype around\u00a0Dark Souls 3<\/em><\/a>\u00a0before its release led to tons of rumors circulating<\/a> about the game,\u00a0some of which turned out to be true.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Bloodborne Style Combat<\/h2>\n

FromSoftware’s Bloodborne<\/em> released exclusively on the PS4 in 2015 and drew many similarities to the company’s Dark Souls<\/em> games. Along with the gothic victorian-era setting, one of Bloodborne<\/em>‘s key differentials was its fast-paced offense-focused combat.<\/p>\n

The shift in combat style impressed both fans and critics, and rumors began circulating that Dark Souls 3<\/em> would implement a similar combat style. The game’s combat wasn’t identical to Bloodborne<\/em>, as defending with a shield was still a key part of combat for most melee builds, but Dark Souls 3<\/em> undoubtedly quickened the pace in Dark Souls 3<\/em>, evidenced by the first boss fight against Iudex Gundyr.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Pus of Man<\/h2>\n

Another similarity to Bloodborne<\/em> that fans suspected may come is the more monstrous enemies. The Dark Souls<\/em> series hadn’t been a stranger to such enemies up until this point, though not many had the horror elements seen in Bloodborne.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dark Souls 3<\/em> ramped up the horror themes in many ways, one of which was with the Pus of Man.\u00a0Iudex Gundyr again exemplifies this, as midway through the fight he will shift into one of these vile beings.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Difficulty Shift<\/h2>\n

Along with its lore and lack of hand-holding, Dark Souls<\/em> is a series known for its punishing difficulty. The third and final Dark Souls<\/em> game’s newfound AAA status worried the series’ die-hard fans that the gameplay would be simplified to appease a larger audience.<\/p>\n

Thankfully,\u00a0Dark Souls 3<\/em> was in no way simplified, but it was noticeably easier than its two predecessors.\u00a0The game did have some\u00a0optional paths<\/a> that posed excruciatingly difficult challenges, such as The Nameless King for example. But the game’s main path, although still tough, was evidently made easier for new fans of the series.<\/a><\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Rule of Four<\/h2>\n

One of the many similarities that carried over from the previous games is the way to access the final boss. Dark Souls<\/em> had the four lords, Dark Souls II<\/em> had the four Old Ones, and, as fans correctly theorized,\u00a0Dark Souls 3<\/em> has the four Lords of Cinder<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 four bosses in the game who must be beaten to progress to the final boss.<\/p>\n

Although Dark Souls 3<\/em>, like the rest of the series, allows players to explore the world freely and\u00a0progress through the game in a non-linear fashion, it is essential to kill the\u00a0Abyss Watchers,\u00a0Aldrich, Devourer of Gods,\u00a0Yhorm the Giant, and\u00a0Lothric, Younger Prince in order to reach the Soul of Cinder.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Returning Areas<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Something that is common with any highly anticipated piece of media is fans excessively analyzing the offering of trailers and sneak peeks<\/a>.\u00a0Dark Souls III\u00a0<\/em>was no different, and some fans thought they’d spotted a couple of hints suggesting that the iconic Anor Londo from the first game would be returning<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The first clue was a castle that appears in a trailer of the game that some fans suspected was Drangleic Castle from Dark Souls II<\/em>, while others believed it was Anor Londo. Ironically, fans still can’t decide on what it is years after the game’s release.<\/a>\u00a0The second clue was an image of a character from a leaked Dark Souls III\u00a0<\/em>screenshot<\/a> which looked almost identical to\u00a0an Anor Londo enemy\u00a0from the original\u00a0Dark Souls.<\/em><\/p>\n

2 <\/span>A\u00a0Reduction In\u00a0Bosses<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The decisive second entry in the Dark Souls<\/em> trilogy, Dark Souls 2<\/em>, greatly expanded upon the number of bosses<\/a> in the base game. It looked at Dark Souls<\/em>‘ 22 bosses, scoffed, and added a whopping 31 bosses in its base game. Bigger is not always better though, and many of the bosses were criticized by fans and critics for being little more than glorified regular enemies.<\/p>\n

Dark Souls 3<\/em> clearly noted this criticism, as it took the base game’s boss count down to a more manageable 19.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>A Reminiscent Ending<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The spoiler-heavy final rumor that was confirmed is a similarity in ending between the first game. Although both games have multiple endings, there is one that is consistent in both \u2014 linking the fire.<\/p>\n

In the original Dark Souls<\/em>, players had the option to Link the Fire which saw them take the place of Lord Gywn, performing a self-sacrifice that revitalized the world around them for a limited time until the cycle was destined to repeat itself. The\u00a0player can repeat the same action in Dark Souls 3<\/em>, although unlike the first game,\u00a0it doesn’t seem to work.<\/p>\n
