Between\u00a0reimagined classics like\u00a0<em>Final Fantasy 7 Remake\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0surprise hits like<em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Hades, <\/em>and\u00a0titles ranging from\u00a0the light-hearted laughs of\u00a0<em>Paper Mario: The Origami King\u00a0<\/em>to the\u00a0heart-wrenching\u00a0drama of\u00a0<em>The Last of Us Part 2<\/em>, there\u00a0have been experiences to suit all tastes.<\/p>\n<p>Every game can be defined by a series of discrete moments, whether emergent or carefully plotted to surprise the player. These are\u00a0some of the finest sequences,\u00a0locales, and challenges\u00a0from titles\u00a0released throughout the past year.`<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-game-levels-2019-best-top\/\">15 Best Video Game Levels of 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Crash-Bandicoot-4-n-sanity-beach.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>After a 22-year of hiatus, the main <em>Crash Bandicoo<\/em>t series returned\u00a0to PlayStation for a new generation of platforming hijinks. And\u00a0the heir to the classic N Sanity Beach, now N Sanity Island,\u00a0delivers the gameplay equivalent of hopping back on a bike after a long break. That is not to say the level is trivial, or leans too heavily on nostalgia\u2014the platforming challenges will quickly bring newcomers up to speed while demonstrating Crash&#8217;s unique charm as a mascot hero.\u00a0It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/crash-4-its-about-time-modernizing-series\/\">a brilliant modernization of the <em>Crash<\/em> series&#8217; solid core<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/demon-souls-boletarian-palace.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-game-trailers-reveal-cinematic-gameplay-2020-best-top\/\"><em>Demon&#8217;s Souls<\/em>\u00a0had one of the best trailers of the year<\/a>, and is one of the\u00a0most impressive-looking launch titles on either next-gen platform.\u00a0But the remake of From Software&#8217;s\u00a0classic<em>\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0much more than a pretty face; its level design is a master class in\u00a0atmospheric dread, challenging enemy placement, and a mix of open and hard-to-navigate areas.\u00a0As befitting the grandfather of the <em>Souls<\/em>-genre, the game tosses players\u00a0into the deep end, having them assault the enemy-infested Boletarian Palace\u2014a castle-like medieval estate complete with a bridge guarded by a fire-breathing dragon and a challenging\u00a0 boss fight to round things out.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qTno-8rZ-Ls?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Destiny 2\u00a0<\/em>is better known for its fierce gunplay and space-wizardry than its platforming, but the game&#8217;s secrets and raid levels often require some absolutely brutal and precise jumping. Case in point:\u00a0<em>Beyond Light<\/em>&#8216;s first raid has an absolutely fiendish jumping puzzle that requires keen eyes, excellent timing, and an absolute mastery of the title&#8217;s\u00a0jumping mechanics.\u00a0Even though the clan <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/destiny-2-clan-luminous-world-first-deep-stone-crypt-raid\/\">Luminous World beat Deep Stone Crypt at a breathless pace<\/a>,\u00a0the raid as a whole provided most fireteams with a steep, satisfying challenge, but the jump puzzle as a whole cannot be ignored.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/doom-eternal-hell-on-earth.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Doom Eternal<\/em>&#8216;s opening level, Hell on Earth, excels for many reasons. The aesthetic\u2014a lava-soaked, urban wasteland where Gundam-sized mechs lay vanquished amidst fallen skyscrapers\u2014captures the essence of classic\u00a0<em>Doom<\/em>. Even more importantly, those visuals and the level&#8217;s pacing harmonize with the game&#8217;s mechanics,\u00a0whose frenetic\u00a0loop\u00a0of gunplay, grenades, chainsaws, and glory kills hearkens back to the series&#8217; root formula: over-the-top violence and twitch-shooting. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hidden-items-doom-eternal\/\"><em>Doom Eternal<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0trove of secrets and hidden items<\/a> also start dropping\u00a0before players can even finish the brief tutorial section, and the layout has a pleasing mix of heavy combat set-pieces, verticality, and exploration.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/fall-guys-slime-climb-long.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout\u00a0<\/em>is one of the many titles that defined multiplayer gaming in 2020. The action in Mediatonic&#8217;s platforming battle royale is defined by the\u00a0gauntlet of obstacle\u00a0courses and arenas players must contend with, and the level that wins the crown is Slime Climb. Like most of <em>Fall Guys<\/em>&#8216; races, the steep, candy-colored switchback\u00a0is laden with tricky obstacles, but it is <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/fall-guys-slime-climb-griefing-guide\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the potential for PVP sabotage that makes Slimb Clime shine<\/a>. This X-factor ensures that every race is a unique experience, which is crucial in a game defined by repeated runs.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Final-Fantasy-7-Wall-Market.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Square Enix faced a steep challenge with <em>Final Fantasy 7 Remake<\/em>\u00a0in striking a balance between players&#8217; nostalgia and the need for modernization, as not all parts of the original game aged gracefully. The developers&#8217; greatest triumph was with the game&#8217;s Wall Market sequence, which involves an underground fighting ring with a brutal boss battle,\u00a0a slew of fun mini-games, and a wonderful twist on Cloud&#8217;s cross-dressing sequence. It is also the section of the game that comes closest to capturing the open-world feel of other\u00a0<em>Final Fantasy\u00a0<\/em>titles, and unlike many of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/final-fantasy-7-remake-part-2-jrpg-trope-side-quests\/\"><em>Remake<\/em>&#8216;s excessive side quests<\/a>, Wall Market keeps things relevant and lively with a fresh cast of likeable supporting characters.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/genshin-impact-liyue.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>In many respects, <em>Genshin Impact<\/em>&#8216;s Liyue is\u00a0the largest entry on the list, constituting an entire continent rather than a discrete environment. But the entire region deserves mention for its beauty saturation of challenges and secrets, and numerous distinct areas that cohesively capture different aspects of its Chinese source material. Liyue Harbor is a thriving metropolis that dwarfs the comparatively conventional Monstadt. The towering spires of the Stone Forest provide a wonderful jungle gym for the game&#8217;s climbing and gliding mechanics that is reminiscent of sumi-e ink wash paintings, brought to vibrant life. If MiHoYo maintains this level of quality with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/genshin-impact-dragonspine-boss-leak\/\"><em>Genshin Impact<\/em>&#8216;s forthcoming regions<\/a>, players have a lot to look forward to.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"related-single\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-mobile-games-2020\/\"><strong>10 Best Mobile Games of 2020<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Ghost-of-Tsushima-Horse-Cinematic.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ghost-of-tsushima-world-design-beautiful\/\"><em>Ghost of Tsushima<\/em>\u00a0has\u00a0some of the most beautiful environments<\/a> of the year<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ghost-of-tsushima-world-design-beautiful\/\">,<\/a> from verdant bamboo forests and autumnal groves to austere, snowy plains. But while its overworld is beautiful, the end of the game&#8217;s second act, Retake Shimura Castle,\u00a0delivers a tour de force performance of mechanical variety\u2014big set piece battles, stealth, and dueling\u2014coupled with compelling character development and deeply moving storytelling. One could argue that Jin&#8217;s decision to poison the Huns marks his true turning point from honorable samurai to ghostly assassin.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Hades-House-of-Hades.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Hades\u00a0<\/em>has emerged as a dark horse candidate for Game of the Year by perfecting the roguelike formula and expanding on its appeal with accessibility and fresh mechanics. One of Supergiant Games&#8217; greatest achievements, however, is that each run through the underworld, no matter how short-lived, feels rewarding. This is partially based on the strength of the game&#8217;s hub level, the House of Hades, where players can mingle with fellow chthonic entities, power up in a variety of ways, listen in on dead shades, and eventually customize the area&#8217;s appearance as well. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hades-word-count-illiad-odyssey\/\"><em>Hades<\/em>&#8216; absolutely enormous script<\/a>\u00a0provides players with a seemingly inexhaustible amount of content doled out in those halls, transforming\u00a0the normally-staid trope of hub areas into something special.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/half-life-alyx-jeff.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Even though <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/virtual-reality-users-45-million-2025\/\">VR is seeing greater adoption<\/a>, naysayers could be forgiven for their skepticism, given the dearth of AAA titles available. But <em>Half-Life Alyx<\/em> is a game-changing title that delivers a truly compelling campaign shooter experience worthy of its predecessors. There are numerous sequences and puzzles that deserve mention, like Zen Garden\u2014a nail-biting maze of explosive barrels and barnacles\u2014but the game&#8217;s\u00a0best level is unquestionably\u00a0Jeff. As players try to navigate an infested vodka factory, they are pursued by the eponymous blind monster who tracks the player via sound. What ensues is a\u00a0viciously tense, truly first-person game of hide and seek with lethal stakes.\u00a0There is no other VR experience like it, though hopefully\u00a0other developers will take note.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Ori-and-the-Will-of-the-Wisps-Silent-Woods.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Even though it is only two games deep, the\u00a0<em>Ori<\/em> series has provided some of the most\u00a0moving, atmospheric\u00a0visuals in the platforming genre. The series&#8217; first sequel,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ori-will-wisps-review\/\"><em>Ori and the Will of the Wisps<\/em><em>, <\/em>improves on\u00a0its predecessor in every way<\/a>, particularly where it&#8217;s larger, more intricate levels are concerned. The\u00a0Silent Woods level stands out as a particularly strong example, showcasing the game&#8217;s painterly mechanics,\u00a0side quest system, and\u00a0numerous, mechanic-rich puzzles\u00a0to great effect. It also contains one of the more poignant beats in the game&#8217;s moving story.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/paper-mario-the-origami-king-shogun-studios.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Nintendo&#8217;s level design is second-to-none, and\u00a0its finest offering of the year can be found in\u00a0<em>Paper Mario: The Origami King<\/em>. Shogun Studios, a parody of Japan&#8217;s real-life Edo World theme park, allows the writers to flex the game&#8217;s charming, punny-sense of humor in full-force and the area&#8217;s theme dovetails wonderfully with the game&#8217;s origami conceit. The amusing parade following the Rubber Band boss fight is a cheerful cherry on top of the experience, with the area\u00a0being also fun to revisit later in the game.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/spider-man-miles-morales-intro-mission.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Though it is a brief experience overall,\u00a0<em>Spider-Man: Miles Morales\u00a0<\/em>kicks off with a cinematic bang. Beginning with a personable introduction\u00a0that shows off\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/spider-man-miles-morales-vinyl-soundtrack\/\"><em>Miles Morales<\/em>&#8216; awesome, vinyl-worthy soundtrack<\/a>, things quickly escalate into a downtown brawl with a host of Raft escapees, followed by a rodeo with the Rhino and an explosive boss fight finish. The tutorial fights seamlessly blend scripted set pieces and <em>Spider-Man<\/em>&#8216;s signature sense of humor for a combination that will please fans of the comics and superhero brawlers alike.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/the-last-of-us-part-2-seattle.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><em>The Last of Us Part 2\u00a0<\/em>provided provided some of the finest\u00a0video game\u00a0sequences of the year; ultimately, Abby&#8217;s Descent stage proves\u00a0the most memorable and harrowing. Between the claustrophobic corridors,\u00a0stalkers, and enemies that blend into infected environments with perfect camouflage, the level plays like a noose of ever-tightening piano wire. The jump scares are never relentless or overdone, as they are intercut with quiet stretches of scavenging and sparse conversation\u00a0between Lev and Abby to remind players of the stakes.<\/p>\n<p>But on top of that is a beautiful master class in level design. Adventuring over the skyscrapers, complete with platforming, stealth, action sequences, and a beautiful backdrop, it&#8217;s easily some of Naughty Dog&#8217;s best environmental design. It&#8217;s all there, and it&#8217;s all perfected.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/wasteland-3-denver-machine-commune.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>In an alternate history, post-apocalyptic title shaped by\u00a0Cold War anxieties, it is very hard to top a giant, mechanized Ronald Reagan and his fanatical machine cult.\u00a0<em>Wasteland 3<\/em>&#8216;s Denver delivers precisely that, in a snow-dusted base built from scrap. As per <em>Wasteland\u00a0<\/em>traditions, players are presented with\u00a0an array of amusing\u00a0choices about the fate of the Reagan AI, followed by a tough fight with the mechanized statue itself.
