The Wii was a huge success for Nintendo, especially financially. The console captivated a casual audience\u00a0by\u00a0offering the opportunity to play tennis in one’s own living room, while hardcore gamers were given their fair share of epic games to keep them entertained. Naturally, this era saw the release of many\u00a0Mario<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>titles.<\/p>\n

Along with a couple of mainline entries, the\u00a0Mario<\/em>\u00a0brand spawned various spin-offs during the Wii’s run, with the quality varying greatly from one game to the next. Which were\u00a0the best and worst\u00a0Mario\u00a0<\/em>games on the Nintendo Wii?<\/p>\n

Super Smash Bros. Brawl\u00a0<\/em>will not be included as it is not a\u00a0Mario\u00a0<\/em>game.<\/p>\n

Regardless of the console or era, the Mario\u00a0<\/em>license\u00a0can be relied upon to deliver a few blockbuster hits and a couple of more modest spin-offs. The Wii marked a high point for Nintendo’s (former) plumber, with\u00a0Mario starring in\u00a0more games during this one period than most mascots manage in a lifetime. Even some of Mario’s more mediocre adventures tend to be worth talking about.<\/p>\n

14 <\/span>Worst: Dr. Mario Online Rx<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

There is nothing particularly exciting about the\u00a0Dr. Mario<\/em>\u00a0series, and the same holds true for its 2008 WiiWare entry. As\u00a0a Nintendo-inspired take on Tetris<\/em>, these games tend to have just enough charm to elevate an otherwise competent but unspectacular gameplay loop.<\/p>\n

Although it may not convert anyone who is not particularly into these types of arcade puzzle titles,\u00a0Dr. Mario Online Rx<\/em>\u00a0is nevertheless a serviceable entry in a franchise that loves to play it safe. The highlight of the package is actually a minigame taken from\u00a0Brain Age 2<\/em>. Although far from horrible,\u00a0Dr. Mario Online Rx\u00a0<\/em>is one of the weakest games starring Nintendo’s mascot on the Wii.<\/p>\n

13 <\/span>Best:\u00a0Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Mario and Sonic coming together to compete in the\u00a0Olympics might not have been exactly\u00a0what most fans pictured for a crossover between these two behemoths of gaming, but the\u00a0Mario & Sonic\u00a0<\/em>series did produce a pretty fun game at its second go of things.<\/p>\n

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games\u00a0<\/em>is an improvement in nearly every area over its 2007 predecessor. This time around, the sports are actually quite fun to play, and the single-player mode is structured in a way that makes the whole thing feel far more epic and eventful. The controls are also more intuitive, opting to dial down on the motion controls. For those interested in trying this series,\u00a0Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games\u00a0<\/em>is the place to start.<\/p>\n

12 <\/span>Worst:\u00a0Mario & Sonic At The London 2012 Olympic Games<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games\u00a0<\/em>suffers from series fatigue, especially since this franchise’s nature demands that certain events are repeated from entry to entry. 2011’s game is considerably better than 2007’s iteration, but the former shares quite a few common sports with the latter.<\/p>\n

Now, in all fairness,\u00a0Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games\u00a0<\/em>improves its repeat events\u00a0and does a great job showcasing its location. While solid overall, this is still ultimately a forgettable and unoriginal game.<\/p>\n

11 <\/span>Best: Super Paper Mario<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Super Paper Mario<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>might be a controversial pick as it marked a considerable departure from its predecessor, the far more RPG-focused\u00a0Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door<\/em>. Blending traditional 2D platforming with basic RPG elements,\u00a0Super Paper Mario\u00a0<\/em>ditches turn-based combat<\/a> for puzzles and exploration. While the gameplay is generally fine, the world is a bit too barren to justify the shift away from combat.<\/p>\n

Despite its many flaws,\u00a0Super Paper Mario<\/em>‘s story is more than good enough to make it one of the best\u00a0Mario\u00a0<\/em>games on the Nintendo Wii.<\/p>\n

Back during a time when Nintendo’s multi-talented plumber was an expert in every sport under the sun, it was not unheard of for\u00a0Mario<\/em>‘s colorful cast to pick up a baseball bat and have a few matches. Like\u00a0Mario<\/em>‘s other sport games,\u00a0Mario Super Sluggers\u00a0<\/em>aims to be accessible rather than deep. The\u00a02008 release makes\u00a0great use of the Wii Remote but is nothing more than just fine.<\/p>\n

Although not a terrible title on its own,\u00a0Mario Super Sluggers\u00a0<\/em>lacks much in the way of content and gets old rather quickly.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Best:\u00a0Mario Kart Wii<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The main issue with\u00a0Mario Kart<\/a> Wii\u00a0<\/em>is that\u00a0Mario Kart 8\u00a0<\/em>made it obsolete. Even if it was not quite as good as\u00a0Mario Kart: Double Dash<\/em><\/a>, the franchise’s Wii entry delivered perhaps the most accessible entry<\/a> in the series.<\/p>\n

While the steering wheel was little more than a gimmick,\u00a0Mario Kart Wii<\/em>‘s multiplayer modes, quick-to-grasp mechanics, and its respectable line-up of tracks made it one of the must-own titles on the console.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Worst:\u00a0Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games\u00a0<\/em>was an underwhelming way to launch a crossover series featuring\u00a0Nintendo and Sega’s iconic mascots. Minigame collections can be entertaining, but 2007’s title was extremely shallow in nearly every department and failed to take advantage of the potential offered by the Olympic gimmick. The inconsistent motion controls also did not help.<\/p>\n

Mario & Sonic\u00a0<\/em>would produce a couple of decent games, but the first entry was not one of them. When it comes to the summer games, 2011’s\u00a0Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games\u00a0<\/em>is the far better pick.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Best:\u00a0Mario Strikers Charged<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

It is a shame that Nintendo dropped the\u00a0Mario Strikers\u00a0<\/em>series after just two entries, as the GameCube original and 2007’s Wii sequel were both solid additions to the\u00a0Mario\u00a0<\/em>brand.<\/p>\n

Mario Strikers Charged\u00a0<\/em>suffers from many of the same issues that plague\u00a0Mario Super Sluggers<\/em>, primarily a disappointing amount of single-player content and gameplay that is explosive but shallow; however, the former’s matches are just more entertaining, over-the-top, and fast-paced. In some ways, Mario Strikers Charged\u00a0<\/em>is the best soccer game on the Nintendo Wii.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Worst:\u00a0Mario Sports Mix<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Mario Sports Mix<\/em>\u00a0collects four popular sports that Nintendo presumably believed could not stand on their own as spin-offs. Unlike\u00a0Mario Strikers Charged\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Mario Super Sluggers<\/em>,\u00a0Mario Sports Mix\u00a0<\/em>does have something resembling a story, even if everything once again boils down to four tournaments.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Mario\u00a0<\/em>sports games are never deep, but\u00a0Mario Sports Mix\u00a0<\/em>found\u00a0a way to make its mechanics even simpler. While the game offers volleyball, hockey, dodgeball, and basketball, neither one is enjoyable enough to be worth revisiting once the short campaign is completed. The end result is a game that offers some quantity but very little in the way of quality.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Best: New Super Mario Bros. Wii<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The\u00a0New Super Mario Bros.\u00a0<\/em>line-up of games would eventually fall victim to the law of diminishing returns, but that should not take anything away from 2009’s original. At the time, it had been quite a while since a traditional 2D\u00a0Mario\u00a0<\/em>platformer had been released; consequently,\u00a0New Super Mario Bros. Wii\u00a0<\/em>felt fresh.<\/p>\n

Even though Nintendo played it a bit too safe, the end result was still a highly polished title in the definitive platforming franchise<\/a>. It is just a shame that its sequels took so few risks.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Worst: Mario Party 8<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Compared to\u00a0Mario Kart<\/em>,\u00a0Mario Party\u00a0<\/em>has not proven to be quite as consistently good<\/a>, and the spin-off series went through a particularly turbulent patch during the Wii era.\u00a0Mario Party 8\u00a0<\/em>represented a franchise running on fumes, one\u00a0that desperately needed an injection of creativity in its single-player content.<\/p>\n

Is\u00a0Mario Party 8\u00a0<\/em>fun with friends? Sure, but that is not saying much. In terms of minigames,\u00a0Mario Party 8\u00a0<\/em>is among the weakest in the franchise and the single-player content is dire.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Best:\u00a0Super Mario Galaxy<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The\u00a0Super Mario Galaxy\u00a0<\/em>games are not only the best\u00a0Mario\u00a0<\/em>titles<\/a> on the Nintendo Wii, but they are among the greatest titles ever made. If someone is a fan of platforming, Nintendo, or gaming in general,\u00a0Super Mario Galaxy\u00a0<\/em>and its sequel should be considered must-play games.<\/p>\n

Super Mario Galaxy\u00a0<\/em>set the groundwork for its successor and, out of the two titles, has a more engaging storyline and a central hub connecting the worlds. Along with tight controls and near-perfect levels,\u00a0Super Mario Galaxy\u00a0<\/em>is the game in the franchise that feels most like it is taking the player on a grand adventure.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Worst: Mario Party 9<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Mario Party 9\u00a0<\/em>deserves credit for trying to shake up the spin-off series’ stale formula; unfortunately, most of the changes were not for the better.\u00a0Rather than a traditional board game<\/a>, all the characters in\u00a0Mario Party 9\u00a0<\/em>are placed in a car and sent to travel as a collective, a change that essentially eliminated\u00a0any sense of strategy and individuality in\u00a0matches.<\/p>\n

Along with that questionable addition, the boards were\u00a0disappointing and the minigames \u2013 which no longer happened every turn \u2013\u00a0could have been better.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Best: Super Mario Galaxy 2<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Ultimately,\u00a0Mario<\/em>‘s main\u00a0titles have always prioritized gameplay over their stories; in fact, the latter is usually ignored.\u00a0Super Mario Galaxy 2\u00a0<\/em>is not a\u00a0conventional sequel to the 2007 game, acting more like a retelling that reduces the narrative to its bare minimum.<\/p>\n

Super Mario Galaxy 2<\/em> exchanges the first game’s superior atmosphere for harder levels, more variety, and Yoshi. It is a trade that pays off in a big way, crafting a sequel that simultaneously recaptures its predecessor’s brilliance while still feeling completely unique.<\/p>\n
