Those conversations came to a head again this past week when <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-last-of-us-2-game-awards-goty\/\">The Last of Us Part 2 <\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-last-of-us-2-game-awards-goty\/\">swept this year\u2019s Game Awards<\/a>, including the award for \u201cBest Game Direction.\u201d Now, co-creator of <em>Duke Nukem<\/em> and director of the infamous <em>Duke Nukem Forever<\/em> has offered his perspective to the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Many are taking <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-last-of-us-2-delay-naughty-dog-crunch-culture\/\">umbrage with <em>The Last of Us Part 2<\/em><\/a>, which was reportedly made under an incredible amount of crunch, winning the award for Best Game Direction. Many feel that allowing one\u2019s team to become so overworked is, by definition, bad directing. Gaming website Kotaku ran an opinion piece titled, \u201cGames Made Under Crunch Conditions Don\u2019t Deserve \u2018Best Direction\u2019 Awards\u201d which gained a lot of traction on Twitter over the weekend. So much traction, that one of the creators of <em>Duke Nukem<\/em> felt the need to respond.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/cd-projekt-red-crunch\/\">CD Projekt Red Developer Backs Up Crunch Reports<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Duke Nukem<\/em> co-creator George Broussard tweeted on Friday that the writer of the aforementioned Kotaku article, Ian Walker, has, \u201cno idea what it takes to ship world beating AAA games\u201d and that the reports of \u201cdisgruntled ex-employees\u201d are nothing compared to the many who still work at a developer like Naughty Dog and say nothing. Broussard also adds that \u201ccomparing a 20-man indie to a 300-person studio is stupid,\u201d referring to developer Supergiant Games, which was also <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hades-game-awards-2020-nominations\/\">nominated for Best Game Direction for its work on <em>Hades<\/em><\/a> and has received a lot of positive attention for its anti-crunch work approach.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/georgebsocial\/status\/1337573117103890433?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In further replies to his initial tweet, Broussard summarizes that AAA development with 300-person teams is, \u201ca very hard problem &amp; things happen &amp; timelines slip\u201d and that, \u201cit\u2019s not all bad management.\u201d Broussard feels that the Kotaku article vilifies Naughty Dog and was \u201cattacking\u201d the studio after it just won\u00a0an award merely for clicks. It is a commonly held belief that the current cycle of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/dev-crunch-culture-video-games-discussion\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crunching to meet deadlines<\/a> in order to please publishers and investors is just how the games industry functions, and that nothing can be done about it.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Schreier, a games journalist known for his impactful reporting on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/rockstar-games-crunch-culture-improve\/\">crunch at developers like\u00a0Rockstar Games<\/a>, quote tweeted Broussard and suggested that the attitude of \u201cthings happen\u201d is part of what allows this cycle of crunch to continue. He wonders that if all developers were allowed \u201ca seat at the table\u201d if things could be different, alluding to his previously published beliefs that developers should have unions, similar to the ones those who work in TV and film are a part of.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jasonschreier\/status\/1338122303419375617?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>An ex-technical artist from Crystal Dynamics, who worked on <em>Rise of the Tomb Raider,<\/em>\u00a0named Derrick Barth replied to Schreier&#8217;s tweet, suggesting that the issue of crunch could truly only be solved if the very fundamentals of game AAA development were altered. He suggests a focus on early prototyping of games before they turn into full AAA projects could save developers a lot of time and grief later on in the development pipeline.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/darklightdays\/status\/1338128482736418817?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jason Schreier is right in that the first step to changing the problematic system of crunch in the games industry starts with everyone in the games industry having a voice.
