Despite initially\u00a0announcing that there were no post-launch plans,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/star-wars-squadrons\/\"><em>Star Wars: Squadrons<\/em><\/a>&#8216; developer has decided to release the update entirely free.<\/p>\n<p>EA and developer Motive Studio&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>dogfighting game has met with a lot of success since its October release. The new, free update was announced last month, promising players a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-wars-squadrons-new-map-starfighters-2020\/\">new map and starfighters before the end of 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-wars-visions-anime\/\">Star Wars: Visions Will Bring Anime to Star Wars<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Players will see the roughly minute-long trailer open up at what appears to be the new map, Fostar Haven. A modified version of the\u00a0prologue\u00a0mission location, the map appears to offer a mix of both close-quarters and open-space areas. Heavily featured are each side&#8217;s new starfighters: the New Republic&#8217;s B-Wing, and the\u00a0Galactic Empire&#8217;s TIE Defender. The B-Wing is classified as a bomber, whereas the TIE Defender is a fighter for the Imperial Navy. The trailer then highlights the remaining features arriving, including new pilot and vehicle cosmetics and several new attachments. This includes a gyro\/aux control model, what appears to be a unique control method for the new B-Wing. Finally, the end of the trailer confirms the addition of the long-awaited custom matches feature.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BvL58B0rB8s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The release of the free\u00a0<em>Star Wars: Squadrons<\/em>\u00a0content\u00a0has come in two parts, Update 3.0 and 4.0. The first update arrived November 25, which saw the addition of the Fostar Haven map, new attachments, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-wars-squadrons-adding-next-gen-improvements-upcoming-update\/\">various next-gen improvements to<em> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Squdaron<\/span>s<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em> The other major part of 3.0 is components, with four being added: The Boost Extension Kit, Ion Rockets, Prototype Piercing Torpedoes, and Anti-Material Rocket Turret. However, certain components only work with select ship classes. Update 4.0, releasing now, sees the addition of the two new starfighters\u00a0as well as\u00a0custom matchmaking.<\/p>\n<p>Given its notorious reputation for including microtransactions, EA giving out free content is a welcome surprise. The company was infamously embroiled in controversy due to its <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-wars-battlefront-2-loot-box-controversy-world-record\/\"><em>Star Wars:\u00a0<\/em><em>Battlefront 2<\/em>\u00a0loot boxes<\/a>. Thankfully, it appears the video game publisher is learning from its past mistakes. It&#8217;s currently unclear whether\u00a0<em>Star Wars: Squadrons<\/em> will be getting any\u00a0additional content after Update 4.0.<\/p>\n<p><em>Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0as a franchise has a huge\u00a0few years coming up. Parent company Disney recently announced several new projects for the IP, including a\u00a0<em>Rogue Squadron<\/em> movie helmed by\u00a0<em>Wonder Woman<\/em> director Patty Jenkins. Unfortunately, Jenkins has confirmed that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/patty-jenkins-rogue-squadron-not-based-on-video-games\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Rogue Squadron<\/em> is not based on the video games<\/a>.
