Not only has the usual paradigm of supply and demand made availability scarce, but <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ps5-scalpers-ebay-prices\/\">scalpers have been using bots<\/a> to snatch up stock once it becomes available and then reselling them at three or four times the retail price.<\/p>\n<p>Barring luck and good timing, it\u2019s nearly impossible for a human being to place an online order faster than a bot, and many disappointed consumers have questioned why retailers didn\u2019t have anti-bot protections in place in preparation for what turned out to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-5-biggest-console-launch\/\">PlayStation&#8217;s biggest console launch in history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ps5-scalper-group-1000-xbox-series-x\/\">Infamous PS5 Scalpers Order Over 1,000 Xbox Series X Consoles, Get Order Canceled<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It turns out that some retailers did react after the extent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ps5-xbox-series-x-scalpers-profit-millions\/\">console botting and scalping problem<\/a> became evident. The console scarcity situation, as bad as it might seem, could have been even worse. On the official corporate Walmart website, Chief Information Security Officer Jerry Geisler discussed steps the company had taken to thwart \u201cgrinch bots\u201d and ensure that legitimate customers were able to obtain two of the holiday season\u2019s hottest items.<\/p>\n<p>Geisler revealed that the store had implemented bot preventative measures hours before <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ps5-xbox-series-x-walmart-black-friday\/\">Walmart\u2019s Black Friday event<\/a> on the evening of November 25, when both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles would be restocked. Geisler states that the company\u2019s preventative actions blocked more than 20 million bot attempts within the first 30 minutes alone.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KinGa_Jones\/status\/1338942937711972354\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The website now has a number of strategies in place to attempt to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/how-will-microsoft-and-sony-stop-bots-and-resellers-from-ruining-pre-orders\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">block a bot<\/a> once it has been detected. And although bot scripts are constantly being rewritten, Walmart is likewise regularly updating its bot detection tools. In addition to stopping bots, Walmart also has instituted an audit of orders after they are placed and quickly cancels any that are determined to have been placed by bots.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to these measures, Geisler expresses certainty that the majority of the PS5 and Xbox Series X console purchases from <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/walmart\/\">Walmart<\/a> have been made by legitimate customers. Geisler then went on to assure readers that the company will have more next-gen consoles available online soon.<\/p>\n<p>Walmart\u2019s preventative measures seem to have been effective. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-buy-ps5-restock-december-2020\/\">Best Buy had issues with its PS5 and Xbox Series X restock<\/a> on December 15, which led to much negative feedback on social media.
