Although Nintendo has had a\u00a0reasonably\u00a0lax year by its recent standards, few can deny that Animal Crossing: New Horizons\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>was one of\u00a02020’s most important games. Unifying friends and families during the pandemic<\/a>,\u00a0the newest entry in the seminal Nintendo life sim became a worldwide phenomenon, with players taking to social media to show off their towns, arrange visits to capitalize on turnip prices, and share custom designs.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the success of\u00a0the game in a recent interview with Polygon, it seems\u00a0Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser<\/a> has been incredibly impressed with\u00a0New Horizons’\u00a0<\/em>performance. Speaking on the game’s reception, the Nintendo executive cited its global success as being “well beyond expectations,” claiming the team had no idea it would become such a significant cultural behemoth in the weeks following its release.<\/p>\n

“I don\u2019t know that we expected it to be truly the cultural touchpoint that it became across the globe,” Bowser claims in the interview, discussing how\u00a0incredible\u00a0it was to see players “celebrating graduations; having birthday parties\u00a0[and] weddings<\/a>” they couldn’t currently hold in the real world. He goes on to mention how players also shared a lot of community creations which has, in his eyes, been a huge reason behind the game becoming such a beloved viral hit.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the regular free seasonal content that Nintendo adds to the game has been another feather in its\u00a0cap, with players returning\u00a0frequently to see what fresh features have\u00a0been added to the title. Recently, Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/a><\/em>\u00a0began its Holiday-focused season, with the game previously throwing the “Turkey Day” event\u00a0in accordance with\u00a0Thanksgiving and\u00a0currently looking to\u00a0hold “Toy Day” on Christmas Eve. Speaking on similar updates, Bowser\u00a0confirmed that Nintendo will be\u00a0continuing to focus on these significant new content drops\u00a0during 2021,\u00a0with the stream of quality\u00a0Animal Crossing\u00a0<\/em>content set to continue going forward.<\/p>\n

For those who somehow missed\u00a0Animal Crossing’s\u00a0<\/em>rise to viral stardom this year, the game was released back in March during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. With many quarantining at home, it soon became an escape for players all across the globe, trending on social media daily.\u00a0Whether the likes of Brie Larson, Elijah Wood, Danny Trejo,\u00a0or even Joe Biden, it seems a number of high-profile names have been linked to the\u00a0title since its release, with\u00a0Star Wars: Rogue One\u00a0<\/em>writer, Gary Whitta, even starting his own talk show in the game called\u00a0Animal Talking<\/a>. As the pandemic rages on into 2021,\u00a0New Horizons\u00a0<\/em>is sure to continue thriving\u00a0as a social hub for friends to connect.<\/p>\n

Animal Crossing: New Horizons\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is out now on Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n
