Well, it\u2019s that time of year again. The time when PlayStation users got to vote on their pick for Sony\u2019s Game of the Year<\/a>. More than 2.5 million people cast their votes across 17 categories, leading to some surprising and not so surprising results.<\/p>\n

The Last of Us 2 <\/em><\/strong>won big this time around, taking home the most awards and being named PS4 Game of the Year. Developer Naughty Dog also won Studio of the Year, followed by Insomniac Games, Sucker Punch, and Square Enix. Meanwhile, Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man: Miles Morales<\/em> won the top prize for PS5<\/a>. Demon\u2019s Souls<\/em>, Assassin\u2019s Creed Valhalla<\/em>, and Astro\u2019s Playroom <\/em>filled out the remaining spots.<\/p>\n

In an unsurprising turn of events, The Last of Us 2<\/em><\/a> swept the awards this time around. The sequel to Naughty Dog\u2019s narrative masterpiece came away with platinum awards for Best Narrative, Best Accessibility Features, Best Graphical Showcase, Best Soundtrack, Best Sound Design, and Best Gaming Moment of the Year. The latter was for Abbie and Ellie\u2019s showdown at the end of the game.<\/p>\n

The Last of Us 2<\/em> also performed respectably in Best Art Direction and Best New Character. Historical epic Ghost of Tsushima<\/em> ended up winning the top prize for art direction, relegating The Last of Us <\/em>to second place. Spider-Man: Miles Morales<\/em> and Final Fantasy 7 <\/em>took third and fourth. Miles himself won best new character, followed by Ghost of Tsushima<\/em> protagonist Jin Sakai. Abby from The Last of Us 2<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and Eivor from Assassin\u2019s Creed Valhalla<\/em> rounded out third and fourth.<\/p>\n

Ghost of Tsushima<\/em> likely would have been the big winner if not for The Last of Us 2<\/em>. Sucker Punch\u2019s samurai sandbox came in second for the PS4 Game of the Year. It also had the most second-place awards, cementing its status as runner up.<\/p>\n

Best Multiplayer unsurprisingly went to Call of Duty: Warzone<\/em>. Meanwhile, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout<\/em> earned the gold second place trophy. C<\/em>all of Duty: Black Ops Cold War<\/em> and Ghost of Tsushima <\/em>came away with silver and bronze. Best VR was no huge shock <\/a>either, with Star Wars Squadrons <\/em>winning the grand prize. Nor was it a suprise that Astro\u2019s Playroom<\/em> handily won Best Use of Dualsense.<\/p>\n

2020\u2019s Best Independent Game ended up being Fall Guys<\/em>. The kooky battle royal platformer came out ahead of Bugsnax<\/em>, with Worms Rumble<\/em> and Skater XL<\/em> landing the silver and bronze. Skater fans will be pleased to hear that the re-release of T<\/em>ony Hawk\u2019s Pro Skater 1 <\/em>and 2<\/em> rolled away with the best sports game. FIFA 21<\/em>, NBA 2K21<\/em>, and Dirt 5<\/em> rounded out the rest of the top four. As for games that haven’t been\u00a0released yet, Most Anticipated went to the unnamed God of War<\/em> sequel.<\/p>\n

The Last of Us 2′<\/em>s\u00a0<\/em>GOTY win is likely to be just as controversial. Just look at the recent The Game Awards backlash<\/a>.\u00a0 The game averaged an impressive 93% on Metacritic, landing on the site\u2019s must-play list. However, there was also a very vocal backlash from fans. Many objected to the games\u2019 treatment of previous protagonist Joel. Others were unsatisfied with the game\u2019s ending. Despite these objections, the player consensus appears to have swung the other way. It’s safe to say The Last of Us 2<\/em> has secured place in gaming history.<\/p>\n

The Last of Us 2<\/em><\/strong> is available for PS4.<\/p>\n
