On December 10th, amidst a swarm\u00a0of St<\/em><\/a>ar<\/em><\/a> Wars<\/em><\/a> announcements during Disney\u2019s 2020 investor call presentation<\/a>, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced Star Wars: The Acolyte<\/em><\/strong>, an upcoming series exclusive to the Disney+ streaming service and the first screen project set in the \u201cHigh Republic,\u201d a brand-new Star Wars<\/em> multimedia project launching in January 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Acolyte<\/em> is a mystery-thriller set in a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging Dark Side powers in the final days of the High Republic era,\u201d Kennedy described during the presentation.<\/p>\n

The series is led by Leslye Headland, a television director most famous for co-creating the critically-acclaimed 2019 Netflix series Russian Doll<\/em>\u00a0with Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler. In April, Variety<\/em> reported Headland had signed on for a female-centric untitled Star Wars<\/em> series, which Lucasfilm then officially confirmed in May on the official Star Wars<\/em> website.<\/p>\n

Initially codenamed \u201cProject Luminous\u201d in 2018, the High Republic was unveiled in February 2020 for an August release, then delayed to January 2021 in light of the COVID-19 outbreak<\/a>. Set 200 years before \u201cA Long Time Ago,\u201c it depicts the Skywalker galaxy at its most prosperous. As described in a digital sample book released in December<\/a>, the High Republic is \u201ca peaceful union of like-minded worlds where all voices are heard, and governance is achieved through consensus, not coercion or fear.\u201d<\/p>\n

This era reportedly kicks off with a catastrophic event known as \u201cThe Great Disaster,\u201d in which all starships across the galaxy abruptly exit hyperspace, causing massive collision and destruction on a level never seen in the Skywalker saga<\/a>. Though it\u2019s currently a mystery as to how this event sets the stage for the High Republic era that follows, it can be speculated that the widespread rescue effort from the Jedi Knights instilled a sense of hope in the citizens of the galaxy, ushering in an age of collaborative cleanup and peacekeeping.<\/p>\n

Conversely, The Acolyte<\/em> is set at the end of this never-explored era, which could imply the actions of the titular character may sow the seeds of the High Republic\u2019s destructive downfall, as well as setting the foundation for the powers and techniques that have defined the Dark Side<\/a> for generations, from socially-distant suffocation to electric mayhem.<\/p>\n

The New Republic is set to launch on January 5th, 2021\u00a0with novels and comics to welcome early adopters. The first wave of content includes the novels Light of the Jedi<\/em> by Charles Soule, A Test of Courage<\/em>\u00a0by Justina Ireland, The Great Jedi Rescue<\/em>\u00a0by Cavan Scott, and Into the Dark<\/em>\u00a0by Claudia Gray.\u00a0A Marvel comic series written by Cavan Scott and illustrated by Ario Anindito is set to launch on January 6th.\u00a0If the wellspring of launch material is any indication, The Acolyte<\/em> will show the beginning of the end, while itself being the end of a\u00a0beginning, taking Star Wars<\/em>‘ first steps into a larger world<\/a> – a republic\u00a0undiscovered\u00a0and full of possibility.<\/p>\n

Star Wars: The Acolyte<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>is currently in development.<\/p>\n
