Official licensing has been a major part of gaming’s sports genre\u00a0for many years. It’s a fundamental reason why fans are happy to buy yearly installments of their favorite sports games, as attribute updates, player transfers, and updated kits are\u00a0enough of a reason for many to make the purchase year after year. The future of licensing in sports games may be about to change though.\u00a0EA Sports’\u00a0FIFA\u00a0<\/em>series, which is\u00a0gaming’s most popular sports series by a huge margin<\/a>, recently paid David Beckham \u00a340 million ($53,416,000)<\/a> to appear as an Icon in their games for the next three years. The issue with this is that the eye-watering sum has caught the attention of current players. Mino Railo, the agent of stars like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba, has said that around 300 players may be taking legal action against EA over their likeness in the games<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This case could have huge ramifications on the future of sports video games, and if the case were to go ahead, official licensing in all sporting games could be called into question. Thankfully, the gaming industry has proven many times that licensing in sports games isn’t a necessity, and these games show that gameplay will always prevail as the most important feature\u00a0in the genre.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Super Mega Baseball 3<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Metalhead Software’s\u00a0Super Mega Baseball\u00a0<\/em>series is quickly becoming a serious challenger to SIE San Diego Studio’s\u00a0<\/a>MLB The Show.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite\u00a0the similarity in character models, Super Mega Baseball 3<\/em> doesn’t have any turbo or special moves\u00a0like in\u00a0NBA Jam.\u00a0<\/em>The gameplay has realistic physics, but with a simplistic playstyle that differentiates it from its\u00a0MLB\u00a0<\/em>competitor.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>SSX Tricky<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

EA Sports clearly took the extreme part of extreme sport seriously with their iconic over-the-top snowboarding game\u00a0SSX Tricky.\u00a0<\/em>EA didn’t\u00a0feel the need\u00a0to worry about licensing with the niche sport, and instead implemented a set of characters bursting with charisma and personality.<\/p>\n

Ubisoft\u00a0had a crack at\u00a0releasing a licensed snowboarding game in 2008 with\u00a0Shaun White Snowboarding<\/em>, though the game was poorly received.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>The Everybody’s Golf Series<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Formerly known in North America as\u00a0Hot Shots Golf<\/em>, the\u00a0Everybody’s Golf\u00a0<\/em>series has had ten releases since the original game in 1997, with the most recent being\u00a0Everybody’s Golf VR.\u00a0<\/em>The\u00a0series utilizes the popular three-click system that many\u00a0golf games implement.<\/p>\n

The success of the series led\u00a0Sony Computer Entertainment to release Hot Shots Tennis\u00a0<\/em>(also known as Everybody’s Tennis<\/em>)\u00a0in 2006, although the game struggled to impress and has a Metascore of just 70<\/a>.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Wii Sports<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Wii Sports\u00a0<\/em>is a strong contender for being the best launch title in gaming history. Sure, its objective quality doesn’t come anywhere close to launch titles\u00a0Super Mario 64, Super Mario World,\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Halo: Combat Evolved<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0but\u00a0Wii Sports\u00a0<\/em>was incredibly important for the Nintendo Wii as it extinguished fears that the Wii’s motion controls were just a gimmick destined to flop like PlayStation’s EyeToy.<\/p>\n

Although the variety of game modes are lacking and the gameplay is simplistic,\u00a0Wii Sports\u00a0<\/em>was revolutionary in 2006 and is still great fun to play with friends today.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>SEGA Soccer Slam<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

SEGA Soccer Slam\u00a0<\/em>is essentially\u00a0FIFA\u00a0<\/em>if EA’s\u00a0developers asked their children to pitch ideas for it. That isn’t meant as an insult, as\u00a0Soccer Slam<\/em>\u00a0provides a fun alternative to the sport’s\u00a0realism-focused\u00a0games<\/a>.<\/p>\n

SEGA Soccer Slam\u00a0<\/em>was likely a big inspiration behind the GameCube’s\u00a0Super Mario Strikers\u00a0<\/em>and Wii’s\u00a0Mario Strikers Charged.<\/em><\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Super Stickman Golf 3<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Considering that mobile gaming\u00a0is inundated with unlicensed sports games, it would\u00a0feel wrong not to include one on this list.<\/p>\n

Like SEGA Soccer Slam, Super Stickman Golf 3\u00a0<\/em>doesn’t worry about realism and instead aims to simply provide enjoyable gameplay. Noodlecake Games succeeded in this through its set of excellently designed, puzzle-like levels that earned the game a\u00a0huge Metacritic score of 95<\/a>.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Excitebike<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Back in the days of the Atari 2600<\/a>, and the NES, official branding wasn’t needed to sell games. Instead of\u00a0Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters,\u00a0<\/em>there was simply\u00a0Tennis <\/em>(1984), Soccer<\/em>\u00a0(1985), and\u00a0Golf <\/em>(1984).<\/p>\n

Excitebike\u00a0<\/em>was one of the NES’ highest-selling games<\/a> and featured the simplistic yet addictive gameplay that the console’s sporting titles were known for.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>The Pro Evolution Soccer Series<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The success of the\u00a0Pro Evolution Soccer<\/em>\u00a0series, formerly known in NA as the\u00a0World Soccer Winning Eleven\u00a0<\/em>series, shows that a realistic sporting title can still be a commercial hit without licensing; as\u00a0it’s the third\u00a0highest-selling sports series\u00a0in the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Konami has managed to secure some licensing here and there, such as the UEFA Champions League for a handful of games, as well as having a handful of licensed teams in each entry. But generally speaking, the games use fake kits, logos, and team names. Some of the older entries in the series even used fake names\u00a0that inadvertently added cryptic puzzle solving to the series, as players\u00a0had\u00a0to work out that\u00a0Snake Derick was\u00a0Steven Davis or that\u00a0Naldarinho was\u00a0Ronaldinho.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Punch-Out!!<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Despite originally releasing in 1987, the NES’ adaption of the popular arcade series\u00a0Punch-Out!!<\/em> is still considered to be one of the best sports games ever made. Although most iterations of the game are unlicensed, a licensed version of the game released with Mike Tyson as the final opponent in the suitably titled\u00a0Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!.<\/em><\/p>\n

The game is still as addictive today as\u00a0when it first released and is available to play on the Nintendo Switch for online members with Mr. Dream as the final opponent.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Mario’s Many Sporting Ventures<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Nintendo has carved their own spot in the sporting genre with their main-man, Mario, and friends, kindly inviting their arch-enemies to games of tennis, golf, soccer, and more.<\/p>\n

Nintendo has dabbled in\u00a0official licensing with their Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games<\/em> series which has featured Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016, and most recently Tokyo 2020. However, the majority of Mario’s sporting ventures have been unlicensed with the strength of Nintendo’s cast of characters being more than enough to appeal to sports fans worldwide.<\/p>\n
