Licensing tennis games that contain venues around the world can be complicated. Although it’s possible to get most of the grand slams, many of the smaller events are left out. Still, games like Mario Tennis<\/em><\/a> prove it’s not all about realism, but enjoyability that makes a smash hit.<\/p>\n

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to visit the top\u00a0tennis video games ever made. This is a ranking of the best tennis games of all time.<\/p>\n

Updated December 21st, 2020 by Jack Pursey:<\/em><\/strong> 2020 has been a tough year for tennis fans; major competitions like Wimbledon have had to be canceled, and many tennis courts were closed due to the pandemic. Thankfully, there is reason to be optimistic that the courts could once again be packed with tennis lovers in the summer of 2021. In the meantime, we have decided to add\u00a0more entries to this list to tide people over while they’re still stuck indoors.<\/p>\n

15 <\/span>Hot Shots Tennis: Get A Grip<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

As the name suggests, Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip<\/em> (also known as Everybody’s Tennis Portable<\/em>) is a spin-off of the popular Hot Shots Golf<\/em> series<\/a> (also known as Everybody’s Golf<\/em>).<\/p>\n

The game continues the\u00a0Hot Shots\u00a0<\/em>tradition of ignoring realism,\u00a0opting to provide over-the-top entertainment instead.\u00a0Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip\u00a0<\/em>scored an impressive 80 on Metacritic; ten points higher than the lackluster\u00a0Hot Shots Tennis\u00a0<\/em>that initially released on the PlayStation 2 in 2006.<\/p>\n

14 <\/span>Mario Tennis: Power Tour<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Game Boy Advance probably isn’t the first system that springs to mind when people think of the best places to play sporting titles, but\u00a0Mario Tennis: Power Tour\u00a0<\/em>offered a great time to anyone willing to give the handheld game a try.<\/p>\n

Released in 2005, the gameplay was similar to that of\u00a0Mario Power Tennis\u00a0<\/em>on the GameCube<\/a> (more on that later), with the gameplay being centered around earning power shots.<\/p>\n

13 <\/span>Virtual Tennis (GBA Version)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Surprisingly,\u00a0Mario Tennis\u00a0<\/em>isn’t the only Game Boy Advance tennis title worth checking out, as\u00a0Virtua Tennis\u00a0<\/em>provides simple yet addictive gameplay on the limited system.<\/p>\n

The game was nominated for GameSpot’s award of Best Sports Game on the Game Boy Advance in 2002<\/a>, though it ultimately lost out to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3<\/a>.<\/p>\n

12 <\/span>Virtua Tennis: World Tour<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The second, but certainly not the last\u00a0game from the critically acclaimed\u00a0Virtua Tennis\u00a0<\/em>series to appear on this list,\u00a0Virtua Tennis: World Tour\u00a0<\/em>released on the PSP<\/a> in 2005.<\/p>\n

As would be expected with a PSP title, the game didn’t offer too many differentials to the main series, but it’s still a fantastic tennis game to play on the go today.<\/p>\n

11 <\/span>Mario Tennis (N64)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Released in the year 2000,\u00a0Mario Tennis\u00a0<\/em>is one of Mario’s few sporting titles that doesn’t implement any sort of power-ups in its core gameplay and instead offers a fairly realistic physics-based tennis experience.<\/p>\n

With an impressive Metascore of 91,\u00a0Mario Tennis\u00a0<\/em>is the highest rated Mario sports game ever when excluding kart racers; with just\u00a0Mario Kart Super Circut\u00a0<\/em>(93) and\u00a0Mario Kart 8 Deluxe\u00a0<\/em>(92) being ahead of it.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Super Tennis<\/h2>\n

Retro gaming is appealing for a variety of reasons. One of which is because winning can be more rewarding. Retro games like Super Tennis<\/em> came with an instruction manual. It’s yet another thing we miss about games like this.<\/p>\n

Super Tennis<\/em> is one of our favorite tennis games because of the amount of polish for its time. It was released in 1991\u00a0and contains characters with different play styles. Fine details like ball runners who grab balls caught in the net enrich the experience.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Grand Slam Tennis 2<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Yes, EA Sports<\/a> was in the business of making tennis games. They’ve dipped their hands into nearly every sport<\/a> by now. Tennis is less prevalent in video games, but it boasts numerous fans worldwide for the sport as a whole, so of course EA Sports was going to make a game or two.<\/p>\n

We are waiting for\u00a0Grand Slam Tennis 3<\/em>\u00a0since there has been a shortage of decent tennis games in recent years. Featuring top players like Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova, the game was praised for its online gameplay. It doesn’t quite measure up to other franchises like Virtua Tennis<\/em> and Top Spin<\/em>, but that won’t stop many from picking up this tennis classic.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Virtua Tennis<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The game that kicked off one of tennis’s biggest video gaming franchises deserves recognition for that and more. Virtua Tennis<\/em> released for platforms like Sega Dreamcast,<\/a> Game Boy Advance,<\/a> and N-Gage.<\/p>\n

Don’t feel alone if you hadn’t heard about two out of three of these consoles. The Sega Dreamcast and the N-Gage had limited sales despite Virtua Tennis<\/em> being a critical success. The console versions integrated a campaign mode, adding to\u00a0their appeal.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Virtua Tennis 3<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

We’re glad Sega decided to release Virtua Tennis 3<\/em> as a multi-platform game despite being out of the video game console market. The Sega Dreamcast may have kicked off the Virtua Tennis<\/em> franchise, but Virtua Tennis 3<\/em> was a significant improvement over the first.<\/p>\n

Had this game built more on Virtua Tennis 2<\/em>, it would have ranked higher on this list. Virtua Tennis 2<\/em> and Virtua Tennis 3<\/em> are strikingly similar and unfortunately contain most of the same faults.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Top Spin<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Now we’re getting into some of the most influential tennis games in history. The original\u00a0Top Spin\u00a0<\/em>is a feature-rich game with one of the most aspirational career modes in sports games.<\/p>\n

The career mode allows you to sign with sponsors, which in turn unlocks clothing and fame.\u00a0Virtua Tennis<\/em>\u00a0is a masterclass, but where so many failed, Top Spin<\/em> surpassed Virtua Tennis<\/em>\u00a0by having an awe-inspiring career mode.<\/em><\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Tennis For Two<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Tennis for Two\u00a0<\/em>deserves special recognition for being possibly the first video game ever made. You might think that Pong<\/em><\/a> was the first game, but\u00a0Tennis for Two<\/em> released years before that.<\/p>\n

Tennis\u00a0as part of video games might not exist if it weren’t for games like Pong<\/em> and Tennis for Two<\/em>. While Pong<\/em> is based on table tennis, Tennis for Two<\/em>\u00a0is played from the side view of a tennis court. The screen was a mere five inches, but the appeal of playing the first video game ever was limitless.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Mario Power Tennis (GameCube Version)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Mario Power Tennis<\/em> for the Nintendo Wii<\/a> was an utter disaster since the motion controls didn’t work well with the game. Mario Power Tennis<\/em> for the Nintendo GameCube, however, is a critically acclaimed masterpiece and one of the best tennis games of all time.<\/p>\n

This game stands out for its whacky antics and unique style of play\u00a0because it’s not a tennis simulation game like many others on this list. The gameplay mechanics work well, which is why this is\u00a0a notable entry\u00a0in the Mario Tennis<\/em> series.<\/a><\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Virtua Tennis 2 (Tennis\u00a02K2)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Although\u00a0Virtua Tennis 3<\/em>\u00a0did little to differentiate itself from its predecessor,\u00a0Virtua Tennis 2<\/em>\u00a0was a groundbreaking achievement. It added the slice tennis stroke, which is a fundamental part of the game.<\/p>\n

Virtua Tennis 2<\/em>\u00a0released for platforms such as the PlayStation 2 and Sega Dreamcast. The Sega Dreamcast is considered a console that was ahead of its time because of games like\u00a0Virtua Tennis 2.<\/em><\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Top Spin 4<\/h2>\n

After the release of the first Top Spin<\/em>, improvements to the series were unimaginable. Top Spin 2<\/em> and Top Spin 3<\/em> were mediocre improvements, but Top Spin 4<\/em> is a masterpiece.<\/p>\n

We have to recognize Top Spin 4<\/em> for its intuitive gameplay. Tennis has never looked so realistic in a simulation game. You can see the emotion in\u00a0your player as you strive for a Grand Slam victory.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Wii Sports<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

As one of the best-selling games of all time,\u00a0Wii Sports<\/em>\u00a0is more than a tennis game. It is boxing, golf, bowling, baseball, and tennis.<\/p>\n

Launching\u00a0a forehand or backhand stroke\u00a0with the Wiimote’s motion controls becomes second nature as you immerse yourself in this game. Tennis has never been as good since\u00a0Wii Sports.<\/em><\/p>\n
