Unfortunately, some of these talked up games don&#8217;t always live up to their circulating rumors. Whether they deserved it or not, here are some horror games that had everyone&#8217;s attention even before their big release.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Worth The Hype: Until Dawn<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Until-Dawn-Wendigo-Howls-At-Face.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Supermassive Games outdid themselves with the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/until-dawn\/\"><em>Until Dawn<\/em><\/a>. It was an incredible interactive horror experience that pulled in both loyal video game fans and newcomers alike. Even if\u00a0new players weren&#8217;t too familiar with video games as a whole, it didn&#8217;t stop them from understanding how groundbreaking and terrifying the story of <em>Until Dawn<\/em> was.<\/p>\n<p>Not only were enemies horrifying, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/until-dawn-brutal-deaths\/\">fear of accidentally offing one of the characters<\/a> was constant and lingering. <em>Until Dawn<\/em> did everything right and definitely was just as scary as rumors made it out to be.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Over-Hyped: Five Night&#8217;s At Freddy&#8217;s (Series)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/five-nights-at-freddys.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/five-nights-at-freddys\/\"><em>Five Night&#8217;s At Freddy&#8217;s<\/em><\/a> first came out in 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/horror-video-games-youtube-essential-playthroughs-watch-funniest-reactions\/\">YouTubers left and right were putting out as many Let&#8217;s Plays<\/a> as they could. Monitoring Freddy and friends made for a great game, at least at first. The same few jumpscares over and over again can only be effective for so long. On top of that, after pumping out sequel after sequel, the <em>FNaF<\/em> series quickly became trite to many players.<\/p>\n<p>After losing track of that one animatronic for the nth time and having Foxy beeline from his keep straight into the player&#8217;s face, it loses its spark. Slowly that feeling of dread and fear fades into frustration and boredom instead. <em>FNaF<\/em> was frightening but compared to the hype it got during its year of release, some players may feel a bit let down from the feeling of repetition.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Worth The Hype: Resident Evil 7<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Resident-Evil-7-Biohazard-Baker-Family-Dinner-Table.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>After disappointing fans with <em>Resident Evil 6<\/em> back in 2012, Capcom knew it needed to remind its audience why <em>Resident Evil<\/em> became a household name in the first place;\u00a0and that&#8217;s just what the company did with the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/resident-evil-7\/\"><em>Resident Evil 7<\/em><\/a> in 2017. Being the first mainline game in the series done in first person rather than third, <em>RE7<\/em> really was the shot in the leg the beloved franchise needed. Capcom went out on a limb and tried something new and different, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/resident-evil-7-moments-intense\/\">it paid off<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-4-scariest-horror-games-ranked\/\">The 10 Scariest Horror Games On PS4, Ranked<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Resident Evil 7<\/em> received a lot of attention during its release and with its fresh new story, frightening enemies, and eerie environments. The <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/resident-evil-7-sales\/\">hype was worth it<\/a>, as this trip to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/scariest-video-game-locations\/\">dilapidated Baker household<\/a> was less than welcoming.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Over-Hyped:\u00a0Ju-On: The Grudge (Haunted House Simulator)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Ju-On-The-Grudge-Game.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>After the theatrical release of <em>The Grudge<\/em> in 2004, almost everyone and their moms were plagued with nightmares of Kayako and her cat son, Toshio. But when <em>The Grudge<\/em> expanded into games and came out with a haunted house simulator in 2009, it fell a little flat.<\/p>\n<p>Controls were clunky, the gameplay was slow, and oftentimes, scares were less frightening and almost a little laughable due to the poor graphics. Although the game may not fulfill its main purpose of being scary, it somewhat made a name for itself as an <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/so-bad-its-good-horror-movies\/\">embarrassingly fun to play horror game<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Worth The Hype: P.T.<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/best-horror-games-current-console-generation-pt-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Although <em>P.T<\/em>., unfortunately, didn&#8217;t come to fruition in the end, it definitely earned a mention when talking about hyped horror games. The buzz around this simple teaser was astounding,\u00a0stressing\u00a0streamers left and right to hurriedly be the first to uncover the secrets hidden within.<\/p>\n<p>This &#8220;would have been <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/silent-hill\/\"><em>Silent Hill<\/em><\/a>&#8221; teaser had everyone talking about how baffling it was that a simple hallway could be so terrifying. So much so that even as an incomplete game that is <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pt-ps5\/\">no longer available<\/a> on the PlayStation Store, <em>P.T.<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0existence <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/horror-games-like-pt\/\">inspired\u00a0plenty of indie and\u00a0AAA developers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Over-Hyped: Friday The 13th<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/friday-the-13th-the-game-art-work.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>After being generously <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-plus-games-october-2018\/\">gifted to PlayStation Plus players for free<\/a> in October of 2018, <em>Friday The 13th<\/em>\u00a0quickly skyrocketed in popularity. Unfortunately, the game itself didn&#8217;t quite do all of its spooky reputation justice.\u00a0Controls felt janky, graphics weren&#8217;t the most impressive, and it was <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/friday-the-13th-bugs-needed-fixes\/\">riddled with glitches and bugs<\/a>\u00a0that made the experience more frustrating than scary.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/horror-movie-villains-video-game-crossovers\/\">10 Times Horror Movie Villains Crossed Over Into Video Games<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Overall, there was too much hype behind what essentially felt like an unfinished product. Perhaps Jason should have sat this one out (<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/friday-the-13th-jason-voorhees-every-playable-version-ranked\/\">every single variation of him<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Worth The Hype: Dead Space<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/dead-space-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>From the moment <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dead-space-isaac-clarke-other-games\/\">Isaac Clarke<\/a>\u00a0boarded the Ishimura in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dead-space\/\">Dead Space<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and laid eyes on his very first necromorph, players knew the rest of the game was just going to get more and more terrifying. This new take on zombies goes heavy on the body horror, unleashing disgusting mutated monsters on the player around each unsuspecting corner. The game mechanic of strategically dismembering each enemy to ensure they would stay dead cleverly forced players to focus and aim as best they could in the face of fear.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dead Space<\/em> overall was a fresh new take on survival horror. It had audiences talking about it, pinned players up against a new gruesome enemy, and somehow made it just as fun as it was harrowing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Over-Hyped: Alone In The Dark (2008)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Alone-In-The-Dark-2008-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Coming off the success of the series&#8217; long-awaited comeback in 2001 with <em>Alone In The Dark:\u00a0The New Nightmare<\/em>, the 2008 installment was quite the drop-off. <em>Alone In The Dark (2008)<\/em> was notorious for disappointing fans. The game was overambitious\u00a0and tried to provide the player with too many different experiences, making it feel like a messy amalgamation of too many genres.<\/p>\n<p>The 1992 original game of the same name was revolutionary for\u00a0the survival horror genre, and this particular installment really seemed to focus on the &#8220;survival&#8221; rather than the &#8220;horror&#8221; (unsuccessfully so).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Worth The Hype: Amnesia: The Dark Descent<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Amnesia-Dark-Descent-Monster-Peeking-In.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Even with its initial release being 10 years ago, <em>Amnesia: The Dark Descent<\/em> has easily solidified itself as one of the most iconic horror games to this day. All the hearsay about <em>Amnesia<\/em> being an exciting, new, and unnerving experience wasn&#8217;t all talk. <em>Amnesia<\/em> was also considered a psychological horror game as well as survival, all adding more and more layers to the hair-raising experience.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-lovecraft-inspired-video-games\/\">Lovecraftian-inspired game<\/a> lived up to all the hype behind its name; whether that fear is from running out of lantern oil or escaping the infamous water monster.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Over-Hyped: Slender: The Eight Pages<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Slender-Eight-Pages-Slender-Man-Origins-Header.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>This game was a great &#8220;first try&#8221; and there&#8217;s no doubt it&#8217;s a fun time. But was<em> Slender: The Eight Pages<\/em> truly as scary as so many people\u00a0made it out to be? Sure, it&#8217;s exciting running from Slendy while picking up some drawings in a dark forest, but &#8220;terrifying&#8221; maybe isn&#8217;t the right word for this game.
