The generation that started it all is relevant more than two decades later. The gameplay and stories have changed, but the fundamentals remain. Pok\u00e9mon,<\/a> called Pocket Monsters in Japan, are\u00a0stored in Pok\u00e9 Balls<\/a>\u00a0until they are tossed into battle.<\/p>\n

Behind all the merchandise, trading cards, and video games are creative Pok\u00e9mon designs<\/a> that resonate with fans. The designs relate to\u00a0move sets and stats that determine a Pok\u00e9mon’s combat power. To face the Elite Four,\u00a0an in-game rival, or friends in the real world, having a lineup with fighting prowess is critical. Although they might evolve into powerful Pok\u00e9mon, these Pok\u00e9mon prove ineffective in their base form.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Magikarp<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

A wild Magikarp appears!\u00a0Kicking it off with an undeniable weakling, this Pok\u00e9mon is abundantly found in water using an Old Rod. Magikarp often appears as a low-level Pok\u00e9mon. The Pok\u00e9mon’s low stats mean it needs to evolve to be taken seriously. Magikarp\u00a0learns\u00a0a limited selection of moves from TMs<\/a> and by leveling up. The only moves it can learn by leveling up are Splash, Tackle, and Flail.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Marowak<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

In the original Pok\u00e9mon Red and Blue<\/em><\/a> adventures, Marowak was a significant part of the story. You have to journey through Lavender Town and the Pok\u00e9mon Tower, which is where you encounter Marowak for the first time.<\/p>\n

Marowak is more formidable than its evolutionary predecessor, Cubone, yet Marowak is not that strong in the overall picture. This Pok\u00e9mon\u00a0haunts the Pok\u00e9mon tower until it can be reunited with its child, so it can release to the afterlife. Any Pok\u00e9mon\u00a0that has this rich of a backstory deserves to be more powerful.<\/a><\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Aerodactyl<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This\u00a0ancient\u00a0Pok\u00e9mon<\/a> is one of the last people choose to spearhead their lineup. The amusing play on words that is Aerodactyl’s name (aero and pterodactyl) sets players up for a letdown since Aerodactyl is underpowered.<\/p>\n

Prehistoric Pok\u00e9mon are typically stronger than the average Pok\u00e9mon, yet in In Generation I, Aerodactyl’s only powerful learned move is Hyper Beam at level 54. The Pok\u00e9mon’s base stats pale in comparison to a Dragonite, Gyarados, or Charizard. With such an imposing appearance, it comes as a surprise that Aerodactly is underpowered.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Abra<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This Pok\u00e9mon is frustrating to catch for all the wrong reasons. One thing that hasn’t changed since Pok\u00e9mon’s<\/em> inception is that Abra is born with Teleport. Catching an Abra proves to be a grueling task since it teleports immediately in the encounter. Had Abra been a genuinely powerful Pok\u00e9mon and one of its evolutionary stages<\/a> didn’t require trading, this Pok\u00e9mon would be a worthy addition. For now, Abra belongs in daycare\u2014not in a trainer’s lineup.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Haunter<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Solely judging a Pok\u00e9mon based on its appearance won’t get you far. According to Haunter’s\u00a0Pok\u00e9mon Yellow<\/em>\u00a0Pok\u00e9dex entry, “By licking, it saps the victim’s life. It causes shaking that won’t stop until the victim’s demise.” Even with\u00a0a sinister description,<\/a> the Ghost\/Poison-type Pok\u00e9mon Haunter is relatively underpowered.<\/p>\n

The only moves Haunter can learn in Generation I are Lick, Confuse Ray, Night Shade, Hypnosis, and Dream Eater. Dream Eater is a strong attack, yet it requires the opponent to be sleeping first. There are only three Ghost-types in Generation I, and oddly enough, only Gengar is primed to\u00a0face the Elite Four.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Meowth<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Meowth plays the villain in the Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> anime series. Unlike ordinary Meowths, Team Rocket’s Meowth<\/a> taught itself how to communicate in the English language and walk upright like humans. Despite being one of the show’s main characters, it is heavily underpowered in Generation I’s Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> games. As Gary is a rival to Ash, Meowth is a rival to Pikachu.\u00a0This feline is underpowered when compared to Pikachu.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Porygon<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

According to Pok\u00e9mon Red and Blue’s<\/em> Pok\u00e9dex entries, Porygon is “a Pok\u00e9mon that consists entirely of programming code. Capable of moving freely in cyberspace.” Our first impression of Porygon leads us to believe it has transcended the limitations of other Pok\u00e9mon. This creature can leap through cyberspace, which is not an easy\u00a0feat, even for Mewtwo.<\/a>\u00a0Evidently, the amount of mystery surrounding a Pok\u00e9mon doesn’t correlate to its power.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Ditto<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Regardless of the generation, Ditto proves to be ineffective in battle. The only move that Ditto can learn by leveling up is Transform. Also, there isn’t a single TM that this Pok\u00e9mon can learn.<\/p>\n

Transforming uses a turn, placing Ditto at a disadvantage against its foes. Ditto copies the movest and stats of its opponent, so the best it can be is the one step down from its opponent. For breeding, Ditto is the most compatible partner. If only Ditto were more powerful,<\/a> it would be a worthy addition to any lineup.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Metapod<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

As you embark on a journey from Pallet Town,<\/a> it becomes apparent that the Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> world is a surreal place.\u00a0Generation I of the Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> games introduces you to potentially powerful Pok\u00e9mon early on, although Metapod is not one of them. Unless you raise a Caterpie and evolve it into a Metapod, you will catch a Metapod without damaging moves. Sure enough, you don’t need the mightiest Pok\u00e9mon to beat Gym Leader Brock. For the rest of the game, however, good luck trying to win battles with a Metapod.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Onix<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This terrifying creature fundamentally shifted the way we think about Pok\u00e9mon. Early in the first\u00a0Pok\u00e9mon<\/em>\u00a0generation, players crossed paths with Pok\u00e9mon like Pidgey and Rattata, but never an Onix massive in size.<\/p>\n

Onix is not tough to beat, which goes against all expectations. Water-type and Grass-type moves are quadruply super effective. Facing Brock’s Onix in Pewter City’s gym is hard but far from impossible. How this colossal Pok\u00e9mon can be bested by a Squirtle or Bulbasaur is nothing short of a miracle.<\/p>\n
