Conceived by Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David to be a half-hour comedy that showed how a standup comic generated his material<\/a>, Seinfeld<\/em> started out humbly with the lowest first-season order in TV history and struggled in a bad timeslot for a couple of years. It eventually became a cultural landmark that dominated the ratings for almost a decade<\/a> and is still enjoyed by fans to this day.<\/p>\n

Episodes like \u201cThe Chinese Restaurant\u201d and \u201cThe Contest\u201d marked watershed moments in sitcom history<\/a>. Later, they find out that the man whose identity they\u2019ve stolen is a white supremacist leader and the limo is taking them to Madison Square Garden to deliver a speech to his hateful followers.<\/p>\n

Along the way, Elaine and Kramer join them, George falls in love with a Nazi, and the limo gets ambushed by angry protestors. \u201cThe Limo\u201d was one of the great Larry Charles\u2019 sharpest Seinfeld<\/em> scripts.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>The Chicken Roaster (9.1)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Jerry and Kramer switch apartments in \u201cThe Chicken Roaster,\u201d as a Kenny Rogers restaurant opens up across the street and the bright lights frazzle Kramer\u2019s brain. Jerry wants to keep the restaurant open so his friend can keep his job, so he moves into Kramer\u2019s apartment and Kramer moves into his.<\/p>\n

Living in Kramer\u2019s apartment turns Jerry into Kramer, while Kramer takes on Jerry\u2019s usual role as the wry voice of reason<\/a>. Watching Michael Richards play Jerry Seinfeld and\u00a0the latter play Cosmo Kramer is a delight.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>The Abstinence (9.1)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

When George\u2019s girlfriend contracts mono and he\u2019s forced to abstain from sex, he\u2019s suddenly more focused and becomes an intelligent sophisticate.<\/p>\n

Elaine, on the other hand, who is also in a sexless relationship (because her boyfriend is studying for medical school and she wants to marry a doctor), follows the opposite trajectory, gradually getting stupider and more juvenile.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>The Merv Griffin Show (9.2)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This season 9 episode has drawn some controversy in recent years, as the B-plot of Jerry drugging his girlfriend so he can play with her vintage toy collection has come to be viewed as an ominous allegory.<\/p>\n

But surprisingly, it\u2019s still one of the top-rated episodes of the show on IMDb, even if the premise of Kramer and Newman digging TV sets out of a dumpster and pretending to host a talk show feels like it was scraped out of the bottom of the barrel.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>The Marine Biologist (9.2)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

George is perfectly comfortable when he\u2019s living one of his own lies, like his architect persona Art Vandelay. However, Jerry throws him a curveball in \u201cThe Marine Biologist\u201d when he tells George\u2019s old crush that he\u2019s since become a marine biologist.<\/p>\n

This episode has one of Seinfeld<\/em>\u2019s greatest endings, dovetailing Kramer\u2019s beach golf with George\u2019s marine biology gambit. After telling the story of how he heroically saved a beached whale, George reveals the obstruction: a golf ball. (Specifically, a Titleist.)<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>The Bizarro Jerry (9.2)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

After Larry David left Seinfeld<\/em> (leaving behind a live grenade on his way out with Susan Ross\u2019 death in the season 7 finale), Jerry Seinfeld took over as the sole head writer. With full creative control, Seinfeld introduced some meta elements into the eighth and ninth seasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bizarro Jerry,\u201d in particular, which uses a Superman reference to look at the characters through a self-aware lens, stands out as an idea that\u00a0probably might not have come to pass if\u00a0David had remained on the show.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>The Soup Nazi (9.5)<\/h2>\n

Larry Thomas gave arguably the most memorable guest performance in Seinfeld<\/em>\u2019s history when he played the titular character in season 7\u2019s \u201cThe Soup Nazi.\u201d He became an icon with four words: \u201cNo soup for you!\u201d<\/p>\n

That phrase made the episode about the fear of being politically incorrect, a topic that is more relevant today than back in the ’90s.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>The Opposite (9.6)<\/h2>\n

In the season 5 finale \u201cThe Opposite,\u201d George discerns that\u00a0his natural instinct has constantly let him down;\u00a0consequently, he decides to do the opposite of what he would usually do. Within days, George has a new girlfriend, a\u00a0dream job with the Yankees, and is moving out of his parents\u2019 house.<\/p>\n

As George\u2019s life improves, Elaine\u2019s life falls apart as she \u201cbecomes\u201d George. This ties in nicely with Jerry\u2019s realization that things always work out for him \u2013 whenever a door is closed in Jerry\u2019s life, a window is opened.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>The Contest (9.6)<\/h2>\n

It should come as no surprise to Seinfeld<\/em> fans that season 4\u2019s \u201cThe Contest\u201d is ranked highest (tied with \u201cThe Opposite,\u201d technically). It is the go-to candidate for the best Seinfeld<\/em> episode and even ranked in the top spot in\u00a0TV Guide’s 100 Greatest Episodes of All-Time.<\/p>\n

What really makes this episode special is Larry David\u2019s Emmy-winning script, which flagrantly discusses masturbation at length for 22 minutes with nothing but network censor-friendly euphemisms.<\/p>\n
