The Outer Worlds<\/i><\/b>, Obsidian Entertainment\u2019s <\/span>Fallout: New Vegas<\/span><\/i> spiritual successor, is a game full of explorable environments, capitalism, and all-too-catchy corporation jingles. Though <\/span>The Outer Worlds<\/span><\/i><\/a> released at the end of 2019, there has already been one DLC released to expand the game\u2019s storyline. <\/span>Peril on Gorgon<\/span><\/i> released in September 2020, amassing mixed to positive reviews from critics.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Outer Worlds <\/span><\/i>has nine different planets listed on the map\u2014some of which are available to players throughout the main storyline, and others that unlock after the purchase of DLC, <\/span>like the planet Olympus<\/span><\/a>. Though players don\u2019t know for certain what the remaining locked planets may hold, their names seem rooted in Greek mythology. The game has shown that each planet\u2019s name is carefully selected to match the environment the developer wanted to convey. This thought process is fairly straightforward, especially with <\/span>The Outer Worlds\u2019 <\/span><\/i>planet Terra-2.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike other planets on Halcyon\u2019s map, Terra-2 doesn\u2019t seem to have Greek roots. In fact, Terra is the Roman equivalent of the Greek goddess Gaia. Both Terra and Gaia are considered the goddesses of the Earth and only have one parent\u2014Chaos. <\/span>Gaia and Tartarus could be considered siblings<\/span><\/a> because of their shared parentage, but this is a little disconcerting considering, according to some accounts, they created Typhon\u2014the dragon-headed monster\u2014together.<\/span><\/p>\n

Literally,<\/span>\u00a0the word terra means \u201cany of the relatively light-colored highland areas on the surface of a moon or planet.\u201d Terra is also a Latin root word that means land, and its uses in modern language are easy to spot with words like \u201cterrarium\u201d and \u201cterraforming.\u201d Though other planets on <\/span>The Outer Worlds<\/span><\/i>\u2019 map seem to stem from Greek roots, it may make more sense for Terra-2 to be named based on the literal definition of \u201cterra\u201d instead of the Greek goddess Gaia\u2019s counterpart Terra.<\/span><\/p>\n

Referencing the word\u2019s Latin roots, <\/span>The Outer Worlds<\/span><\/i> map<\/span><\/a> describes Terra-2 as a terraformed planet that\u2019s created a habitable place for humanity in Halcyon. Various scientific studies have also nicknamed present-day Earth \u201cTerra.\u201d Keeping this in mind, it\u2019s fairly straightforward to see that Terra-2 is, quite literally, supposed to be the Halcyon colony\u2019s planet Earth equivalent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Terra-2 is also the player’s first introduction to the world of the game. After speaking with Phineas Welles, players crash onto Terra-2\u2019s surface in an escape pod and accidentally kill Welles\u2019 hired help, Captain Alex Hawthorne. Though all the planets on Halcyon\u2019s map offer unique destinations, Terra-2 definitely has the most to offer players in terms of locations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Crucial quests to advance the game are found on Terra-2, along with the first two of six total crew members. Players have the option to <\/span>take Parvati Holcomb and Vicar Maximillian DeSoto<\/span><\/a> aboard the Unreliable after encountering them in the Saltuna producing town of Edgewater. The town is initially run by Reed Tobson, but this can change depending on the player\u2019s choices during the first few quests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides Edgewater, Terra-2 is also home to the Emerald Vale, which players must navigate in a similar way as the Monarch Wilderness. Further along in the game, players must revisit Terra-2 to explore Byzantium. While most locations in <\/span>The Outer Worlds<\/span><\/i> demonstrate a difficult life for its citizens, Byzantium is for the wealthy, so-called \u201celite\u201d society of Halcyon. It\u2019s a very metropolitan area that can require stealthy navigation at times. Interestingly, <\/span>the <\/span>Peril on Gorgon<\/span><\/i> DLC unlocks a new building in Byzantium<\/span><\/a> that players couldn\u2019t explore previously.<\/span><\/p>\n

Terra-2 is full of places to explore, whether it\u2019s buildings or smaller locations spread out on the map. Given its Latin roots and how it\u2019s meant to function in the game, it\u2019s no surprise Terra-2 has the name it does. Terra-2 will always be there to catch The Stranger as they hurtle down to its surface\u2014an interesting edge no other planet can achieve.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Outer Worlds <\/i><\/b>is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.<\/span><\/p>\n
