The independent video game<\/a> industry saw a sharp rise in prominence in the late 2000s and early 2010s with titles like\u00a0Braid<\/em>, Fez<\/em>, Super Meat Boy<\/em>,\u00a0and of course\u00a0Minecraft\u00a0<\/em>showing that indie games could stand toe to toe with even the largest AAA franchises<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Today, indie video games<\/a> make up a huge portion of the gaming market. Many people favor the old-school simplicity that many of these titles provide, in contrast to the open-world action-adventure titles that are currently dominating the industry. 2020 has been another fantastic year for indie projects, and the\u00a0highest-rated indies games on Metacritic\u00a0have brought great joy to many gamers worldwide during what has been a difficult year.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Observer: System Redux (86)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Bloober Team’s cyberpunk game\u00a0Observer: System Redux\u00a0<\/em>is an enhanced re-release of\u00a0Observer,\u00a0<\/em>featuring\u00a0improvements to the visuals as well as new story content.<\/p>\n

The psychological horror title won numerous awards upon its initial release, including Best Emotional Indie Game from The Emotional Game Awards 2018<\/a> and Best Setting from Game Informer<\/a>. The latest version is the best way to experience the game and it is even available on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Huntdown (87)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

A callback to classic ’80s run and gun titles<\/a> like Contra\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Metal Slug<\/em>, Easy Trigger Games’\u00a0Huntdown\u00a0<\/em>throws players into crime-infested cyberpunk streets.<\/p>\n

The game doesn’t hold back on the nostalgia with its side-scrolling arcade action, 16-bit pixel graphics, and old-school synthesized soundtrack. Huntdown\u00a0<\/em>will make players feel like they’re back in a 1980s arcade.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Streets of Rage 4 (87)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Huntdown\u00a0<\/em>isn’t the only arcade throwback on this list, as Dotemu’s\u00a0Streets of Rage 4\u00a0<\/em>is reminiscent of classic beat em’ up titles like\u00a0Golden-Axe\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Double Dragon.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Much like the aforementioned\u00a0Huntdown<\/em>, it would be a disservice to say that\u00a0Streets of Rage 4\u00a0<\/em>is purely a nostalgic novelty, as the game offers fantastically balanced combat in a campaign that has tons of replay value.\u00a0It would be a shame if only older gamers give\u00a0Streets of Rage 4 <\/em>a chance, as it’s\u00a0a perfect gateway game for younger audiences to get a taste of the side-scrolling beat ’em’ up genre.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Super Mega Baseball 3 (87)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Unlicensed sporting games are always fighting an uphill battle against titles like FIFA, Madden<\/em>, and NBA 2k<\/em> that have official branding and team names.\u00a0Super Mega Baseball 3\u00a0<\/em>and other\u00a0similar sports games may be about to get their deserved recognition though, due to the ongoing\u00a0FIFA\u00a0<\/em>licensing\u00a0issue<\/a> that could have huge ramifications on the future of licensing in sporting titles.<\/p>\n

Super Mega Baseball 3\u00a0<\/em>provides plenty of hope to sporting fans who are worried about the potential licensing lawsuits though, as the game offers a simple yet addicting brand of baseball that\u00a0is a worthy competitor to the\u00a0MLB The Show\u00a0<\/em>series.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Pistol Whip (88)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The\u00a0sole VR game to feature\u00a0in this article,\u00a0Pistol Whip\u00a0<\/em>is a fantastic advert for virtual reality equipment, with its offering of immersive FPS action gameplay.<\/p>\n

Cloudhead Games\u00a0have already\u00a0<\/em>won numerous awards for their 2020 game, including Immersive Reality Game of the Year at the 2020 D.I.C.E Awards<\/a>. Anyone with a VR headset should definitely give\u00a0Pistol Whip\u00a0<\/em>a look.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition (88)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Whereas\u00a0Huntdown\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Streets of Rage 4\u00a0<\/em>take players back to the action-pact run and gun and beat em’ up genres that were prominent in the ’80s,\u00a0Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition\u00a0<\/em>is a throwback to the ’90s era of point and click games.<\/p>\n

Cardboard Computer’s game has one significant difference to the ’90s point and click titles, however, in that the game ditches the puzzle-solving<\/a> in favor of pure storytelling. This makes Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition\u00a0<\/em>a perfect game for those that complained that the tough puzzles in games like\u00a0<\/a>Grim Fandango<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>detracted from the flow of the story.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>A Short Hike (88)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Created by\u00a0Adam Robinson-Yu in just three months,\u00a0A Short Hike\u00a0<\/em>was ported to the Nintendo Switch in August 2020 and offers a fantastic open-world adventure that is centered around collecting golden feathers.<\/p>\n

The game was a deserving winner at the\u00a0Independent Games Festival Awards, picking up the\u00a0Seumas McNally Grand Prize and\u00a0Audience Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension (89)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Almost certainly the most unique game<\/a> released this year;\u00a0There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension\u00a0<\/em>starts by trying to live up to its name, as it actively encourages players to stop playing.<\/p>\n

Once the game gets going, it jumps between multiple different genres, including ’90s inspired point and click puzzle-solving and top-down\u00a0The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>style adventuring.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Spelunky 2 (91)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The follow-up to 2008’s\u00a0Spelunky\u00a0<\/em>narrowly edges its predecessor on Metacritic by just one point. Developers\u00a0Mossmouth and\u00a0BlitWorks didn’t try to reinvent a wheel with\u00a0Spelunky 2;<\/em>\u00a0keeping the core gameplay similar to the original\u00a0Spelunky,<\/em>\u00a0while finding ways to simply improve upon the pre-existing material.\u00a0<\/em>Among the more significant additions was the\u00a0implementation of a ridable turkey, reminiscent of Yoshi in the Mario Bros.<\/em> games.<\/p>\n

Spelunk 2<\/em>\u00a0was nominated for the Best Indie Game award at The Game Awards 2020<\/a> but lost out to the next and final entry on this list.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Hades (93)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

IGN’s Game of the Year<\/a> and The Game Awards’ Best Indie Game<\/a>,\u00a0Hades <\/em>has quickly\u00a0become one of the most critically acclaimed roguelike action-RPGs in the genre’s history.<\/p>\n

Hades\u00a0<\/em>deserves all of the praise and acclaim that it is currently receiving for its fantastic combat system, excellent offering of post-game content, and superb storytelling that is intelligently and seamlessly weaved into the gameplay.<\/p>\n
