In a recent interview, AEW’s Aubrey Edwards shed some light on her history within the gaming industry and talked about video games that inspired her growing up. She also spoke about her time working with video game developer 5th Cell on the\u00a0Scribblenauts\u00a0<\/em>franchise, a series of puzzle action video games.<\/a><\/p>\n

Aubrey Edwards, whose real name is Brittany Aubert, is a referee for All-Elite Wrestling, an American professional wrestling promotion company. She also has recently been chosen to be a developer and producer for AEW’s new gaming division of the company, AEW Games.<\/a> Her hybrid role at AEW comes directly as a result of her passions and education growing up, stemming from some inspiring games she played as a kid.<\/p>\n

Some of Aubert’s earliest memories involve video games. “I played Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em> with [my mom] when she was pregnant with my sister. I played NBA Jam<\/em> with my dad, so it’s like gaming’s always been a big part of just my life in general.” One of the first games she played that inspired her to work in the gaming industry was the widely acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time<\/em>, a game considered one of the best in the adventure genre<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She quickly grew to love many other games as well, especially JRPGs. She cites\u00a0Final Fantasy 7, 10,\u00a0<\/em>and the original\u00a0Kingdom Hearts\u00a0<\/em>game as some of her favorites. These games cemented her love for the vastness of video game storytelling even though she grew to prefer shorter games as she became older, like\u00a0Braid\u00a0<\/em>and the wacky\u00a0Untitled Goose Game.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Now that Aubrey travels constantly in the wrestling business, she focuses on games that she can play on her Nintendo Switch. The console is known for its versatility and has a plethora of Nintendo first-party titles<\/a>. Aubert finds joy in the cute and cuddly, stating that if a game is “cute, adorable, and has bright colors, I’ve probably played it.” She looks back on her time as a tool programmer for\u00a0Scribblenauts\u00a0<\/em>and eventual lead producer on\u00a0Scribblenauts Unlimited\u00a0<\/em>fondly, as this time helped to develop her skills in video game technology she uses in her job today.<\/p>\n

Though there are plenty of cute and light-hearted games out right now, the most recent game Aubert is into isn’t one of them. She’s been putting time into WWF No Mercy,<\/em>\u00a0an\u00a0<\/em>N64 classic<\/a>, as part of her research for developing new titles for AEW Games.\u00a0Even with her referee responsibilities that keep her busy on Wednesday nights as a part of\u00a0AEW Dynamite,\u00a0<\/em>it’s clear that Aubert is trying hard to keep gaming in her life. Her background in the gaming industry and her fierce determination as a referee are an incredible combination that should make fans of upcoming AEW releases excited for what is to come.<\/p>\n
