While the story is an amusing riff on a classic tale, fans may be surprised by some of the characters that make an appearance, possibly teasing a return in future franchise installments.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u00a0has been a very quiet year for the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/sonic-the-hedgehog\/\">Sonic the Hedgehog<\/a><\/em> franchise. Although the year started with <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sonic-the-hedgehog-box-office-record-video-game-movies\/\">the surprise success of the\u00a0<em>Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em> movie<\/a>, the worldwide spread of COVID-19 seems to have\u00a0put\u00a0Sega&#8217;s other plans for the franchise on hold.\u00a0The franchise was initially set to offer a major announcement of some kind at the 2020 SXSW conference, but when it was canceled, Sega did not provide an announcement in any other form. As it stands, the last mainline series installment was\u00a0<em>Sonic Forces<\/em>, which\u00a0is now over three years old.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sonic-forces-how-to-play-as-shadow\/\">How to Play as Shadow in Sonic Forces<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Entitled &#8220;An Eggman Carol,&#8221; the new video retells Charles Dickens&#8217; classic\u00a0<em>A Christmas Carol<\/em> story with a Sonic twist. Sonic and his friends pose as the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future to convince Eggman to change his ways. The video is filled with all kinds of clever references that only the most dedicated\u00a0<em>Sonic<\/em> fans will notice &#8211; for example, Eggman&#8217;s pajamas are a reference to his earliest design concepts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/facts-trivia-about-sonic-hedgehog-characters\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which envisioned Eggman as a hero.<\/a>\u00a0Some references are a bit easier to recognize &#8211; for example, the ghost version of Sonic has shackles made of the series&#8217; iconic Rings.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VvNWIMnu5Hw\" frameborder=\"0\" allowTransparency=\"true\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden;width:480;height:360;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly,\u00a0Eggman learns very little from the ghosts who visit him. While he is typically viewed as a silly or over-the-top nemesis to Sonic, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sonic-dr-eggman-robotnik-worst-things-he-did\/\">Eggman has committed a range of war crimes<\/a>, and successfully took over the world for several months in\u00a0<em>Sonic Forces<\/em>. While some may be disappointed that Eggman resorts to using the Chaos Emeralds to avoid bettering himself as a person, it is absolutely in character and an amusing subversion\u00a0of the classic tale.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that the video features a few relatively obscure characters, including the Babylon Rogues from the<em> Sonic Riders<\/em>\u00a0games, whose last starring role was in <em>Sonic Free Riders<\/em> for the Xbox 360.\u00a0Eggman&#8217;s vision of Christmas Future also shows\u00a0Eggman Nega, Eggman&#8217;s descendant from the future, who starred in the\u00a0<em>Sonic Rush<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Sonic Rivals<\/em> games. Given the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sonic-forces-sanic-dlc\/\"><em>Sonic<\/em> franchise&#8217;s focus on jokes and memes<\/a> over the last few years, it&#8217;s difficult to know whether characters like Eggman Nega could\u00a0have a major role in future games, or if his inclusion in the video is just a one-off joke.<\/p>\n<p>Even without any new games officially announced, the\u00a0<em>Sonic<\/em> franchise is active in other ways beyond the holiday video. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sonic-the-hedgehog-animated-series-netflix\/\">Netflix accidentally leaked a new <em>Sonic<\/em> series<\/a>\u00a0to debut in 2022. Plus, the\u00a0<em>Sonic the Hedgehog 2<\/em> film is currently in the works, promising to add series mainstay Tails to Sonic&#8217;s continued cinematic adventures.
