For that matter, the entire <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/action-rpgs-like-dark-souls\/\"><em>Dark Souls<\/em> series<\/a> is bandied as some of the hardest games ever, but <em>Bloodborne<\/em> is often seen as particularly challenging thanks to its fast-paced combat.<\/p>\n<p>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/10-hardest-shrines-breath-wild\/\">10 Of The Hardest Shrines In Breath Of The Wild<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That said, it&#8217;s not as if <em>Bloodborne<\/em> is the be-all-end-all of difficult video games. In fact, there have been countless games released throughout the years that some may claim to be harder than <em>Bloodborne<\/em>. For example, old NES and Atari games. Most of them will have you throwing a controller in no time!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Updated December 28th, 2020 by Jack Pursey:<\/em><\/strong> The outpour of praise and acclaim that\u00a0<em>Bloodborne, <\/em>along with\u00a0the rest of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fromsoftware-dark-souls-bloodborne-dlc-ranked\/\">the Soulsborne franchise<\/a>, have received has quickly made FromSoftware one of the gaming industry&#8217;s most beloved developers. The collection of games went against the grain of modern trends, ditching the ever-decreasing difficulty levels and excessive hand-holding for a punishing yet rewarding experience. The games have reminded people of why tricky video games can be so enjoyable, despite the frustration that they provide, and have players itching to challenge themselves with\u00a0more tough games. To help scratch that itch, we have decided to expand this list with\u00a0more difficult, but critically acclaimed games.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">15 <\/span>XCOM 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/XCOM-2-Chance-To-Hit-Meme-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The second entry in the rebooted\u00a0<em>XCOM\u00a0<\/em>franchise is one of the best modern turn-based tactics games on the market.<\/p>\n<p><em>XCOM 2<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0difficulty comes from several different places. Along with the often ridiculous hit percentages and A.I. that will punish even the slightest mistake; the game ditches the concept of respawning, meaning one bad mission can seriously damage a squad&#8217;s overall skill and experience level.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">14 <\/span>Grim Fandango<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Grim-Fandango-At-Festival.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Grim Fandango\u00a0<\/em>is considered to be the last major title released during the point and click genre&#8217;s dominant era of the 90s; as anyone who&#8217;s played a LucasArts or Sierra graphic adventure will know, numerous games in the genre could take this spot.<\/p>\n<p>A large reason for the plethora of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/puzzle-games-impossible-complete\/\">tricky and obscure puzzles<\/a> in games like\u00a0<em>Grim Fandango\u00a0<\/em>is that the publishers would often have guide books or helplines to aid players who were stuck for a fee. Players couldn&#8217;t quickly bring up a YouTube walkthrough on their smartphone back in the 90s, so helplines were\u00a0the only way for gamers to progress if they were stuck. This money-making idea resulted in games like <em>Grim Fandango\u00a0<\/em>having a handful of puzzles with solutions that make players wonder how they were ever supposed to figure it out.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">13 <\/span>Contra<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Contra-First-Level.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>One of the most iconic run and gun games of all time,\u00a0<em>Contra\u00a0<\/em>came to arcades in 1987 before porting to home consoles shortly after. As was often the case with arcade titles,\u00a0<em>Contra\u00a0<\/em>isn&#8217;t particularly long, so Konami intentionally ramped up the difficulty to ensure that arcade gamers weren&#8217;t getting too much value for their coin.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-ps4-platinum-trophies-hardest\/\">The 15 Hardest Platinum Trophies To Get On PS4<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The game can be made easier by using the recurring Konami Code, but\u00a0even with the 30 additional lives, the game is still brutally difficult.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">12 <\/span>Mike Tyson&#8217;s Punch-Out!!<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/mike-tyson-s-punch-out-1220061-1280x0.jpeg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>One of the many iterations of the classic\u00a0arcade game\u00a0<em>Punch-Out!!,\u00a0<\/em><em>Mike Tyson&#8217;s Punch-Out!!\u00a0<\/em>was released in the west with the iconic boxer taking the role of the Dream Fight opponent which is filled by Super Macho Man or Mr. Dream in other versions.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mike Tyson&#8217;s Punch-Out!!\u00a0<\/em>is by no means an easy game up until the final fight, but it&#8217;s safe to say that the\u00a0jump in difficulty when facing the former heavyweight champion is one of the largest in gaming history.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">11 <\/span>The Witness<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/The-Witness-Overhead-Screenshot-Of-A-Puzzle.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Designed by<em>\u00a0<\/em>Jonathan Blow, best known for his work on 2008&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Braid,\u00a0<\/em>2016&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Witness\u00a0<\/em>throws players into a\u00a0<em>Myst\u00a0<\/em>inspired island that is filled with tricky line puzzles.<\/p>\n<p>Much like\u00a0<em>Bloodborne<\/em>, the game offers little in the way of hints or in-game help and instead forces players to learn\u00a0each\u00a0area&#8217;s themes and patterns by solving <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hardest-puzzle-games\/\">increasingly difficult puzzles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/5-Sekiro.png' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Everyone wondered what FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki had up their sleeves following the conclusion of the <em>Dark Souls<\/em> series. It was <em>Sekiro<\/em>, a samurai-themed game heavily imbued with <em>Dark Souls<\/em> DNA. And while it was certainly good, many people thought that it leaned way too heavily into the whole &#8220;these games are difficult&#8221; infamy. Many people couldn&#8217;t grasp the basic swordplay mechanics, and those that could had <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-sekiro-bosses-ranked\/\">incredible difficulty with the bosses<\/a>. It was called &#8220;cheap&#8221; on more than one occasion, and many people considered it far more difficult than the <em>Dark Souls<\/em> trilogy and <em>Bloodborne<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Ghosts &#8216;N Goblins<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Ghosts-Goblins-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>In many respects, <em>Ghost &#8216;N Goblins<\/em> was the original <em>Dark Souls<\/em>. It&#8217;s a platforming game that sees you playing as a knight forced to do battle with many supernatural creatures, including ghosts and goblins.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ninja-gaiden-best-worst-boss-fights\/\">Ninja Gaiden: The 5 Best Boss Fights In The Modern Franchise (And The 5 Worst)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It has a legacy for being one of the toughest games ever, as it only takes two (yes, two) hits to kill the player character. And if you die, you are forced ALL THE WAY BACK to the beginning of the level. Not only that, you are forced to play through the game TWICE in order to reach the true final boss and ending. It was a nightmare.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Ninja Gaiden II<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Ninja-Gaiden-II-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Sekiro<\/em> was often compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ninja-gaiden-best-worst-boss-fights\/\">the <em>Ninja Gaiden<\/em> series<\/a>, and for good reason. Both contained a similar style, and both were relentlessly difficult and annoying. While all the <em>Ninja Gaiden<\/em> games are difficult, <em>II<\/em> is on a whole other level of stupid difficult. Enemies bombard the player at a relentless pace, and each deal a significant amount of damage that will have you crying for your mom after just ten minutes. By the end of the game, the enemies have cannons and kill you in seconds flat, all but ensuring that no one ever finished the thing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>The Simpsons<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Simpsons-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The 1991 <em>Simpsons<\/em> arcade game is undoubtedly one of the greatest arcade beat-em-ups of all time. But, like all arcade games, it had one objective &#8211; earn as much money as possible. Seeing as how arcade machines earned money by players inserting coins to &#8220;continue&#8221; the game, this often meant that the game contained an artificially increased difficulty. <em>The Simpsons<\/em> was no better, as it contained hordes of enemies, all of whom deal enough damage to ensure your death after just a few minutes.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/GH-III-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The great thing about <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/guitar-hero-vs-rock-band-best-rhythm-game\/\">the <em>Guitar Hero<\/em> series<\/a> is that anyone could pick it up and play. But those who REALLY wanted to play and prove themselves were forced to play on expert difficulty, and whoo boy, we can see why they called it &#8220;expert.&#8221; <em>Guitar Hero II<\/em>I ramped up the difficulty in an exponential way. Not only did it contain\u00a0inherently challenging songs like Through the Fire and Flames and Cliffs of Dover, but the button sequencing was the most obtuse and challenging of the entire series. You may as well just learn the real guitar at this point!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Super Meat Boy<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Super-Meat-Boy.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Super Meat Boy<\/em> is a fantastic game, and it served as an incredible throwback to the platformers of yore. That said, it played a lot like the platformers of yore, and that means obtuse game design and immense frustration.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hardest-fps-games-ranked\/\">The 15 Hardest FPS Games Ever Made, Ranked<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Unlike many platformers of the 80s and 90s, <em>Super Meat Boy<\/em> wasn&#8217;t exactly difficult in a cheap sense, like it wanted to kill you just to earn more money. But it required precision and pitch-perfect timing, which of course not everyone has. It&#8217;s certainly not for everyone, but for those looking for a challenging, throwback platformer, you could do a lot worse.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Cuphead<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Cuphead-trending-on-Twitter-why.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The <em>Dark Souls<\/em> series proved surprisingly popular, and as such, many developers took notice and realized that there was a market for\u00a0strenuous video games. Enter Cuphead, another arduous run and gun game that has the ability to tire you out within seconds. Many people called <em>Cuphead<\/em> cheap and unpredictable, as it goes for the &#8220;bombard the player with literally dozens of obstacles, two of which are enough to kill them&#8221; approach. You have to have the reflexes of a cat to beat this thing. Either that or just memorize the patterns. But that&#8217;s boring.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Silver Surfer<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Silver-Surfer-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Silver Surfer<\/em> was released for <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/classic-nes-games-still-look-amazing-today\/\">the NES<\/a> back in 1990 and instantly received a reputation for being silly hard. It is still regarded as one the hardest video games in existence, but unlike <em>Dark Souls<\/em>, it&#8217;s not really difficult in a fair and fun way. It&#8217;s difficult in a &#8220;who would actually play this!?&#8221; way. The screen is constantly scrolling forward (despite your actions), the Silver Surfer is relentlessly attacked with items that can kill him with one hit, and the levels are often obtusely designed to be confusing. It&#8217;s cheap, it&#8217;s ridiculous, and it is no fun.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>I Wanna Be The Guy<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/The-Guy-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>I Wanna Be the Guy<\/em> was intentionally designed to be the biggest pain in the butt in gaming history. The levels are intentionally designed to be confusing, and some even downright cheat, all in order to frustrate the player. Items that you don&#8217;t think will kill you, and items fly in all sorts of nonsensical directions. And yes, you die in one single hit. It requires nothing short of sheer trial and error, and that doesn&#8217;t exactly make for a fun video game, does it?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Battletoads<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Battletoads-NES-Attack.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Battletoads<\/em> everything fascinating about <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-selling-nes-games-ranked-sales\/\">old NES games<\/a>. It is both wonderfully produced and exceptionally fun, but also incomprehensibly difficult. It&#8217;s a side-scrolling game, but the gameplay is extremely fast-paced, resulting in obstacles often flying towards the player at high speed. It requires the player to have both exceptionally fast reflexes and strong memory skills, as one of the two is absolutely required to see the game through to completion.
