As some FromSoftware fans\u00a0hungrily await new information about Elden Ring<\/em><\/strong>, others are haunted by a different question: will\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0ever see a sequel?\u00a0<\/em>Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>was a console-defining title for the PlayStation 4, and while some\u00a0players may argue that it it is best to let the\u00a0property end\u00a0with a\u00a0single high note, there is a good case to be made for returning to Yharnam after FromSoftware finishes with Elden Ring<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

FromSoftware does not like to repeat itself<\/a>, and the inclination to resist churning out profitable but shallow sequels is commendable. This is most evident in last year’s\u00a0Sekiro,\u00a0<\/em>a wildly\u00a0acclaimed and\u00a0successful game that is beautiful and punishing with no sequel in sight, even though it would doubtlessly sell well. Even though the Game of the Year Edition recently received fresh DLC, the game does not demand a follow-up in the same way that Bloodborne<\/em> does.<\/p>\n

Sekiro<\/em> is something of an anomaly\u00a0among FromSoftware titles, in that its narrative is far more straightforward and self-contained than either\u00a0the Souls-<\/em>series, or Bloodborne<\/em>. A few mysteries still linger, but\u00a0Sekiro<\/em>‘s story revolves around\u00a0Wolf and his relationship to Kuro<\/a>, and the game sees their story through to a satisfying conclusion. Bloodborne<\/em>‘s anonymous, player-created hunter isn’t the central\u00a0focus\u00a0of the game, however\u2014the world is.<\/p>\n

Even more than the medieval nightmares of\u00a0Dark Souls<\/em>\u00a0or the grimly mythical quality of\u00a0Sekiro<\/em>‘s feudal Japan,\u00a0<\/em>the brooding, blood-soaked Victorian and Gothic features of Yharnam,\u00a0Bloodborne’s<\/em> setting, are distinctly new. Both the game’s setting and its mix of\u00a0firearms and transforming melee weapons were shaped by the mechanical sensibilities of the early industrial revolution and feel unlike anything else in games at present. In a way, the gaming industry is still digesting\u00a0Bloodborne<\/em>‘s example, whose influence is just now starting to emerge in other titles. The early imagery of the forthcoming\u00a0Dragon Age 4<\/em>, has a distinct Bloodborne vibes,<\/a> for example.<\/p>\n

If FromSoftware abandons this world after a single outing, somebody else will return to it and run with it, in spirit if nothing else. It would hardly be surprising to see a rival developer jump on that aesthetic and produce a game that is to\u00a0Bloodborne\u00a0<\/em>as\u00a0Back 4 Blood\u00a0<\/em>is to\u00a0Left 4 Dead<\/em><\/a>:\u00a0not just a spiritual successor, but a sequel in everything but name (though, it should be mentioned that Back 4 Blood<\/em> is a unique situation).\u00a0At the same time, there is no question that FromSoftware is the best developer to do the job. And that alone is sufficient justification for it to revisit the franchise.<\/p>\n

The other reason to revisit\u00a0Bloodborne<\/em> is that its story arguably isn’t finished. The tenuous details teasing connections to the\u00a0Souls-<\/em>verse, the hazy connections between the Hunter’s Dream, the\u00a0true nature of the Great Ones, and the founding of the Byrgenwerth Scholars are pocked with question marks.\u00a0While FromSoftware fans have proven themselves extremely adept at chronicling all of the games’ subtle details, and using deft speculation\u00a0to fill\u00a0in the blank spaces\u2014or, in Elden Ring<\/em>‘s case, completely fabricating lore where there is none<\/a>\u2014more information and clarity would scratch an itch that has been growing for half a decade.<\/p>\n

Regrettably, given the lack of information about Elden Ring<\/em>, it seems unlikely that FromSoftware has another project in simultaneous development or even a follow-up planned afterwards\u2014assuming\u00a0Elden Ring<\/em> itself has not been cancelled<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There are silver linings to be had, however, even if FromSoftware\u00a0never revisits\u00a0Bloodborne. <\/em>Companies inevitably shift, and\u00a0some of the game’s\u00a0core creative members\u00a0have moved on to other ventures, like\u00a0Bloodborne<\/em>‘s producer, Teruyuki Toriyama, who is due to depart<\/a> at the end of December. While it would be best for\u00a0FromSoftware to realize more of\u00a0Bloodborne<\/em>‘s potential,\u00a0no follow-up at all is better than a\u00a0bad sequel.<\/p>\n

Bloodborne\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is available now for PlayStation 4.\u00a0Elden Ring<\/strong><\/em> is currently in-development.<\/p>\n
