The tactical gameplay wasn&#8217;t all that differentiated them though, as both series took inspiration from the work of Tom Clancy. At a time when most shooters had next to no story at all, Ubisoft utilized the American novelist&#8217;s work to bring their games to life with compelling narratives.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/last-of-us-best-story-games-recommendations\/\">10 Story-Heavy Games To Play If You Loved The Last Of Us, Ranked By Metacritic<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The success of story-driven games inspired Ubisoft to create a new franchise that drew inspiration from the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-stealth-games-metacritic\/\">revolutionary stealth series\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-stealth-games-metacritic\/\">Metal Gear Solid<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>The result was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/splinter-cell\/\"><em>Tom Clancy<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/splinter-cell\/\">Splinter Cell<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>a stealth franchise centered around the now iconic action protagonist Sam Fisher.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Splinter Cell: Essentials (58)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/splinter-cell-essentials.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Sat at the bottom of the list by a considerable margin is\u00a0<em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Splinter Cell: Essentials.\u00a0<\/em>The game took the series to the PSP for the first time, and as the name suggests, it was essentially a greatest hits of the franchise.<\/p>\n<p><em>Essentials<\/em> revamped some of the best levels from the sereis&#8217; original trilogy and added a sprinkle of new missions on top. This may sound like an appealing package for\u00a0people looking to get into the series or even pre-existing\u00a0<em>Splinter Cell\u00a0<\/em>fans, but unfortunately, the game was plagued with issues.<\/p>\n<p>Along with a multiplayer mode that felt like an afterthought,\u00a0<em>Splinter Cell: Essentials\u00a0<\/em>suffered from excessive load times, frustratingly dark levels, and a camera that almost made the game unplayable.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Splinter Cell: Blacklist (84)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/splinter-cell-blacklist.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/stealth-games-best-greatest-decade-2010s-metacritic\/\">The latest entry in the series<\/a> sees a significant jump in Metascore.\u00a0<em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Splinter Cell: Blacklist <\/em>was<em>\u00a0<\/em>released at the very end of the PS3 and Xbox 360 cycle, which caused it to go somewhat under the radar.<\/p>\n<p>Despite releasing so late in the lifespan of the consoles, the game was criticized for feeling dated. Reviewers docked the game points for its generic and uninspired graphics, and the short runtime of around 10 hours which wasn&#8217;t uncommon for the series, but fell short of other AAA releases at the time.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tomb-raider-metacritic-scores\/\">Every Tomb Raider Game, Ranked Worst To Best (According To Metacritic)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Blacklist\u00a0<\/em>did have a lot of upsides though. In particular, it did an excellent job with the series&#8217; three most important features; its stealth, combat, and narrative.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Splinter Cell: Conviction (85)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Splinter-Cell-Conviction-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Splinter Cell: Conviction\u00a0<\/em>was a divisive entry upon release due to its gameplay that swayed away from stealth and more onto\u00a0tactical combat. Much like\u00a0<em>Blacklist,\u00a0<\/em><em>Conviction <\/em>had its share of issues preventing it from reaching the height of its predecessors; along with having a similarly short campaign to <em>Blacklist,\u00a0<\/em>the game&#8217;s new interrogation feature failed to impress.<\/p>\n<p>For those that were happy to accept the series&#8217; shift in direction, they were treated to numerous fantastic combat mechanics including the new Mark &amp; Execute feature. Mark &amp; Execute does what it says on the tin, letting players target an enemy before finding the best way to kill them discreetly.\u00a0<em>Conviction\u00a0<\/em>was also praised by fans and critics for its more personal story that sees Sam investigate the death of his daughter.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Splinter Cell: Double Agent (89)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/splinter-cell-double-agent.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth pointing at this\u00a0point that this list categorizes entries by their highest-rated score, as\u00a0<em>Double Agent<\/em>\u00a0scored as low as 61 and 64 on the Nintendo Wii and GameCube respectively, as the\u00a0iterations featured different levels and a different storyline to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC story.<\/p>\n<p><em>Double Agent\u00a0<\/em>impressed with its moral story and multiple endings, a rare and exciting\u00a0feature for 2006. Ubisoft were rewarded for their efforts with multiple end of year awards including <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070816021158\/http:\/\/bestof.ign.com\/2006\/xbox\/1.html\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Best Action Game from IGN<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070129025325\/http:\/\/goty.gamespy.com\/2006\/xbox\/index6.html\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xbox Game of the Year from GameSpy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Splinter Cell (93)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Tom-Clancys-Splinter-Cell-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The one that started it all,\u00a0<em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Splinter Cell\u00a0<\/em>released in 2002 and introduced the gaming industry to its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/greatest-espionage-stealth-games-metacritic-scores\/\"><em>Metal Gear Solid\u00a0<\/em>inspired<\/a> stealth gameplay, differentiating itself from <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/brutal-games-like-doom\/\">the\u00a0<em>DOOM\u00a0<\/em>inspired shooters<\/a> that were still dominating the market.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/halo-games-ranked-worst-best-metacritic\/\">Every Halo Game, Ranked From Worst To Best (According To Metacritic)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Along with the unique stealth gameplay, <em>Splinter Cell<\/em>\u00a0was innovative for its implementation of a movie-like narrative, for which it <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080704132217\/http:\/\/www.gamechoiceawards.com\/archive\/gdca_3rd.htm\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won the Excellence in Writing award at the Game Developer Choice Awards<\/a>. The game&#8217;s other accolades included <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamecriticsawards.com\/2002winners.html\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">E3&#8217;s Best Action\/Adventure Game<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20081227091105\/http:\/\/xbox.ign.com\/articles\/383\/383128p1.html\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IGN&#8217;s Xbox Game of the Year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (93)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/TOM-CLANCYS-SPLINTER-CELL-PANDORA-TOMORROW.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The second entry in the\u00a0<em>Splinter Cell\u00a0<\/em>franchise,\u00a0<em>Pandora Tomorrow\u00a0<\/em>doesn&#8217;t just share the same Metascore as its predecessor, but it has the exact same User Score too.<\/p>\n<p>Ubisoft opted for an &#8220;if it\u00a0isn&#8217;t broke don&#8217;t fix it&#8221; approach to <em>Pandora Tomorrow,\u00a0<\/em>offering minimal changes to the gameplay from the original.
