Riding high on the successes of The Mandalorian<\/em>‘s second season, Disney has announced that a staggering twelve new Star Wars<\/em><\/a>\u00a0are projects headed to Disney Plus. Given its aspiration to build a rich, interconnected ecosystem of stories, Disney would be wise to incorporate another stand-out star in its streaming offerings.\u00a0Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order<\/em><\/strong>‘s\u00a0Cal Kestis and the crew of the Mantis would make a welcome surprise addition to several of the\u00a0forthcoming shows and miniseries.<\/p>\n

Given the number of shows revealed, it may be useful to take a brief inventory\u00a0and determine which of the shows Cal and his crew could possibly appear in. The Acolyte<\/em>, set at the end of the High Republic Era, can be safely crossed off the list. Cassian Andor of\u00a0Andor\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0canonically dead by the events of\u00a0Fallen Order,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0enough has been revealed about Cal’s past<\/a> to make a crossover with the incipient rebel alliance unlikely.<\/p>\n

But that still leaves\u00a0Disney with ten potential crossover options:\u00a0A Droid Story<\/em>,\u00a0Ahsoka<\/em>, The Bad Batch<\/em>\u00a0(Clone Wars<\/em>‘ animated follow up),\u00a0<\/em>The Book of Boba Fett<\/em>,\u00a0Lando,\u00a0<\/em>Obi-wan Kenobi<\/em>,\u00a0The\u00a0<\/em>Mandalorian<\/em>‘s third season,\u00a0Rangers of the New Republic<\/em>,\u00a0Rogue Squadron,<\/em>\u00a0and the Star Wars<\/em> anime compilation,\u00a0<\/a>Visions<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

In terms of timing, Fallen Order<\/em> kicks off five years after Revenge of the Sith<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0The Bad Batch,\u00a0<\/em>Obi-Wan<\/em>,\u00a0Lando\u00a0<\/em>are the three properties whose early post-Prequel Trilogy\u00a0settings most neatly coincide with\u00a0Fallen Order’s<\/em>. Little is known about\u00a0A Droid Story<\/em> and\u00a0Rogue Squadron,<\/em> but they could also potentially segue directly into\u00a0Fallen Order 2<\/em>. And Visions<\/em>, which is a compilation of anime short stories, will likely jump around\u00a0Star Wars’<\/em> many eras, making it another contender. But the main question that Disney and Respawn must answer\u00a0is this: if the Mantis crew\u00a0is\u00a0alive and active during the events of the Original Trilogy, where are they\u00a0and what are they\u00a0doing\u00a0while\u00a0the Empire runs amok?<\/p>\n

If Respawn can solve those problems, however, and decides to jump\u00a0ahead with Fallen Order 2–<\/em>say, to the end of Star Wars Rebels<\/em>, or even the\u00a0Original Trilogy Era\u2014<\/em>many interesting options are suddenly on the table. But in certain respects, the longer Cal and Cere survive, the more pressing the\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0franchises’ Jedi problem<\/a> becomes. So it is sadly unlikely that we will see Cal Kestis appear in\u00a0<\/em>The Book of Boba Fett,\u00a0<\/em>Mandalorian Season 3<\/em>,\u00a0or\u00a0Rangers of the New Republic<\/em>, which are all set after the events of\u00a0Return of the Jedi.<\/em>\u00a0Ahsoka, as another absentee Jedi,\u00a0is in a similar situation, but fortunately,\u00a0her story presents Disney with options that could solve\u00a0problems for both Fallen Order 2<\/em> and\u00a0Ahsoka\u00a0<\/em>simultaneously.<\/p>\n

As per the MCU playbook, sprinkling subtle references to tease\u00a0Fallen Order<\/em> throughout Disney’s new offerings seems like the best way to bring Cal and company into the fold, before revealing him in a proper, jaw-dropping cameo like Luke Skywlker<\/a>. Seeing the Mantis docked at a spaceport, for example, or even seeing a\u00a0different BD unit in a crowded bar or market would go a long way. One of the many reasons The Mandalorian\u00a0<\/em>excels is its generous use of\u00a0Easter eggs for eagle-eyed viewers. Teasing Cal\u2014<\/em>or Cere, Greez, Merrin, or BD\u2014<\/em>before involving the characters deeply in a show’s plot essentially\u00a0allows Disney to please fans twice over: once to whet appetites and build anticipation, and another to pay it off.<\/p>\n

It would not be surprising to see Obi-Wan address a young Cal at the Jedi Temple during a flashback or to have Lando mention a fellow gambler, Greez Dritus, by reputation. After all, Disney\u00a0hid several similar, smart references to Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>Rebels<\/em> in\u00a0Rogue One.\u00a0<\/em>But given the new emphasis on narrative interconnectivity,\u00a0the showrunners\u00a0have to take things a step further. It would be great to see Cal and company appear in multiple properties, teaming up with the leads of those shows while\u00a0pursuing the next leg of their own\u00a0Fallen Order<\/em> quest (whatever it may be)<\/a>. Cal and Cere should seek out Obi-Wan for advice. Greez should wager the Mantis against whatever ship Lando has in a hand of Saback. These characters should have multiple meaningful, life-altering interactions with each other.\u00a0That said, there is one show where Cal and his allies would be a fit better than others.<\/p>\n

By\u00a0the time\u00a0Ahsoka Tano matches her white light sabers against Din Djarin’s beskar in the second season of The Mandalorian<\/em>, Cal Kestis is likely dead, lost, or frozen in carbonite somewhere. It\u00a0is unlikely he would abandon his fight against the Empire, yet given his abilities, it seems equally unlikely that his Jedi exploits would go unremarked in the galaxy. But Ahsoka, a Force user who is arguably distinct from a traditional Jedi, is on a different quest: one that could provide Cal with a different perspective on the Jedi Order, and possibly even sway him to a different cause than directly opposing the Empire.<\/p>\n

It also seems likely, given the huge gap between the end of Rebels\u00a0<\/em>and the beginning of The Mandalorian<\/em>, that Ahsoka\u00a0<\/em>will gradually tell that interim story, in addition to furthering her search for Grand Admiral Thrawn. It seems plausible that the two Jedi outcasts could team up for a story that is told across\u00a0Jedi Fallen Order 2<\/em> and the\u00a0Ahsoka<\/em> series. Even though\u00a0Rosario Dawson now portrays Ahsoka Tano on the big screen, her Clone Wars<\/em>‘ voice actress,\u00a0Ashley Eckstein, expressed interest in appearing in Fallen Order 2<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Playing as a pair of Jedi, each with their own unique strengths and skill sets, would be a welcome surprise in\u00a0the next\u00a0Fallen Order\u00a0<\/em>game<\/a>, and provide Respawn and Disney with another opportunity to develop two beloved characters. And if the powers that be decide that Cal is too powerful to survive the Galactic Civil War, he can still live on via flashbacks in\u00a0Ahsoka<\/em>. And, depending on the ambiguity of his death, he may even be able to return to life down the road. After all, defying certain death is something of a Star Wars<\/em> tradition.<\/p>\n
