According to a recent interview,\u00a0F-Zero GX\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>producer\u00a0Toshihiro Nagoshi would be willing to create a new\u00a0F-Zero<\/em> game for Nintendo. Even the slightest suggestion of a new\u00a0F-Zero<\/em><\/a> game would thrill series fans, who have gone well over a decade without a new installment.<\/p>\n

In the 1990s and 2000s, F-Zero\u00a0<\/em>was one of Nintendo’s signature franchises, offering a more intense alternative to\u00a0Mario Kart<\/em>.\u00a0Befitting\u00a0its origins as a Super Nintendo launch title<\/a>, F-Zero\u00a0<\/em>made an impression on new SNES owners right away, with blistering speed and clever use of the system’s Mode 7 graphics capabilities. The series continued on the Nintendo 64 with\u00a0F-Zero X<\/em>, and then on the GameCube with\u00a0F-Zero GX.\u00a0<\/em>The most recent entry in the series is\u00a0F-Zero Climax<\/em> for the Game Boy Advance, released exclusively in Japan in 2004.<\/p>\n

In an interview discussing his role as the creator of the Yakuza<\/em> series,\u00a0Toshihiro Nagoshi was asked if he would be willing to return to the F-Zero\u00a0<\/em>franchise. Nagoshi said he would probably do so if given the chance, although it is unlikely. It’s not hard to see why he would be willing: over nearly two decades, F-Zero GX<\/em> has gained a widespread reputation for being one of the best racing games ever made<\/a>. Although Shigeru Miyamoto has famously said that he could not think of ways to evolve the F-Zero<\/em> series from there, Nagoshi and many others would\u00a0likely\u00a0have ideas of their own.<\/p>\n

Outside of Captain Falcon’s presence in the\u00a0Super Smash Bros.<\/em> series, Nintendo has occasionally acknowledged the series over the last decade, giving hope to series fans. Wii U launch title\u00a0Nintendo Land<\/em>\u00a0included a virtual attraction themed after F-Zero<\/em>, and\u00a0Mario Kart 8\u00a0<\/em>included tracks, vehicles, and music tracks from the\u00a0F-Zero<\/em> games as DLC. Still,\u00a0the F-Zero<\/em> series has surprisingly deep lore<\/a>, and there is plenty of room for future standalone games starring Captain Falcon alongside his allies and foes.<\/p>\n

Fans should also know that other developers have tried to fill the gap left by the\u00a0F-Zero<\/em> games. Anyone with a Nintendo Switch can download Fast RMX<\/em>, which incorporates F-Zero’<\/em>s signature speed<\/a> alongside new gimmicks. Even\u00a0Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/em>‘s 200cc mode, which sees\u00a0vehicles moving at a breakneck pace, often draws comparisons to\u00a0F-Zero<\/em>. Plus, anyone subscribed to the Nintendo Switch Online service can play the original\u00a0F-Zero<\/em> SNES game for free.<\/p>\n

There is one other surprising way in which the\u00a0F-Zero<\/em> series might make a comeback: through films inspired by classic Nintendo franchises. While the only project to be confirmed thus far is a\u00a0Mario<\/em> movie, it is not impossible to imagine how other franchises could tie together. After all,\u00a0Metroid<\/em>,\u00a0Star Fox<\/em>,\u00a0F-Zero<\/em>,\u00a0Pikmin<\/em>, and\u00a0Kirby<\/em> games all share themes of space travel. In the right hands, a thrilling crossover starring Captain Falcon<\/a> wouldn’t be hard to create.<\/p>\n
