The battle for the world of Thra will continue in the latest news concerning Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal<\/strong><\/em>, as the series is set to be getting its own tabletop RPG<\/a>. Developed by game design company River Horse, the tabletop game will be based in mythology from the original 1982 movie\u00a0The Dark Crystal\u00a0<\/em>and the recent Netflix exclusive\u00a0The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance\u00a0<\/em>and will be released in 2021.<\/p>\n

The Dark Crystal\u00a0<\/em>movie is considered a cult classic and featured some of most elaborate puppeteering and animatronics work in film at the time. A sequel was harried by budgetary issues and production setbacks and never materialized. Fans of the movie were ecstatic when the prequel series,\u00a0The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,\u00a0<\/em>was released by Netflix in 2019, but unfortunately the series was canceled after a\u00a010 episode first season<\/a>. But now the next great iteration of Thra’s mythology could be in the new tabletop RPG.<\/p>\n

The tabletop RPG will be a single volume book that contains a 100 scene, 200 page adventure and a GM toolkit so that players can create their own stories and encounters in the world of Thra. The book will also feature some fold-out pages, transparency overlays, and a fully illustrated map of Thra. The game is meant to be a lighter tabletop RPG compared to heavyweight Dungeons and Dragons<\/a>\u00a0in order to appeal to fans who love the source material but may not be familiar with the tabletop format.<\/p>\n

After the the crushing news of\u00a0The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance<\/em>‘s cancellation, many fans were worried for the future of the franchise.\u00a0The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics<\/a><\/em> was released in 2020 but failed to capture the magic of Thra with bland visuals and rote gameplay. But a new tabletop RPG promises a new story and endless homebrew possibilities<\/a>, so fans should keep their eyes out for more news on its release.<\/p>\n
