But it was once a rarity reserved for must-see movies like the final <em>Harry Potter<\/em> entry or <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/action-movies-need-video-game-adaptations\/\">the greatest Batman movie ever made<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/highest-grossing-video-game-movies-all-time\/\">The 10 Highest-Grossing Video Game Movies Of All Time<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>No movie cleared this bar until 1997 when James Cameron came along with a little movie called <em>Titanic<\/em> and it wouldn\u2019t become the norm for summer tentpoles to rake in this much money until the 2010s.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1,045,713,802)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Pirates-of-the-Caribbean-On-Stranger-Tides.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>After a lackluster threequel, the <em>Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em> franchise really started to lose the plot in its fourth installment. <em>On Stranger Tides<\/em> ditches virtually all connections to the past three movies, only keeping Johnny Depp\u2019s Jack Sparrow long after the schtick had gotten old.<\/p>\n<p>But enough fans still got a kick out of Depp\u2019s performance to push the movie into the $1 billion club. The franchise wouldn\u2019t underperform at the box office until the next movie, <em>Dead Men Tell No Tales<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Transformers: Dark Of The Moon ($1,123,794,079)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Transformers-Dark-of-the-Moon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Michael Bay was the perfect director to adapt action figures into a movie, because his \u201cBayhem\u201d filmmaking style is the cinematic equivalent of a kid playing with toys.<\/p>\n<p>Although it\u2019s a marked improvement over its predecessor, <em>Revenge of the Fallen<\/em>, <em>Dark of the Moon<\/em> still falls into the same trappings of all Bay\u2019s <em>Transformers<\/em> movies: loud, bombastic, offensive, and proudly unsubtle.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Alice In Wonderland ($1,025,467,110)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Alice-in-Wonderland-2010.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Before Jon Favreau\u2019s <em>The Jungle Book<\/em> kickstarted a relentless barrage of live-action remakes of animated Disney classics, Tim Burton updated <em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em> with his own bleak, gothic visual style.<\/p>\n<p>Like many of the Disney remakes that would follow, <em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em> is a visually stunning, but artistically vacant endeavor that fails to live up to its classic source material.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man\u2019s Chest ($1,066,179,725)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Pirates-of-the-Caribbean-Dead-Mans-Chest.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>When a movie based on a theme park ride defied the odds to become Disney\u2019s next big franchise, the Mouse House couldn\u2019t wait to rush out a sequel. <em>Dead Man\u2019s Chest<\/em> relies on the supernatural elements more than its predecessor, but it\u2019s still an action-packed spectacle.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/highest-grossing-games-never-got-a-sequel\/\">The 10 Highest-Grossing Games That Never Got A Sequel<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a big-budget adventure movie harking back to swashbuckler classics, <em>Dead Man\u2019s Chest<\/em> recaptures more of the first movie\u2019s magic than any of the subsequent sequels.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Avatar ($2,744,336,793)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Avatar.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Due to its use of a <em>Pocahontas<\/em>-esque story on a foreign planet populated with blue-skinned aliens, James Cameron\u2019s <em>Avatar<\/em> was mockingly nicknamed \u201cDances with Smurfs.\u201d Sure, the plot is derivative and the environmentalist message is on-the-nose, but that wasn\u2019t the attraction of this movie.<\/p>\n<p>The reason why <em>Avatar<\/em> became the highest-grossing movie of all time \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/avengers-endgame-profits\/\">a record it held until <em>Avengers: Endgame<\/em> came along<\/a> \u2013 is that moviegoers were excited by its technological advancements. It was the most immersive, cutting-edge CGI ever created.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Titanic ($2,127,488,188)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Titanic.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>James Cameron only promised 20th Century Fox a movie about the sinking of the Titanic because he wanted the studio to pay for him to explore the shipwreck. With a ballooning budget accommodating the construction of half a ship, many industry pundits expected <em>Titanic<\/em> to bomb, and the premise already provided them with a perfect metaphor to describe box office failure.<\/p>\n<p>And then it hit theaters and became the first film in history to gross over $1 billion worldwide. It broke that record with such oomph that it almost made it to $2 billion, a bar it would later clear with subsequent re-releases.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows \u2013 Part 2 ($1,341,511,219)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Harry-Potter-and-the-Deathly-Hallows-Part-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Setting a trend that continues to affect book adaptations to this day, the producers of the <em>Harry Potter<\/em> franchise decided to split the final book, <em>Deathly Hallows<\/em>, into two movies. After getting all the exposition out of the way in the first part, the second could focus on the Battle of Hogwarts.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years before <em>Avengers: Endgame<\/em> did the same thing, <em>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows \u2013 Part 2<\/em> concluded a long-running franchise with an action-packed epic that <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/every-mcu-movie-worst-best-ranked-rotten-tomatoes\/\">feels like a hugely satisfying series finale<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King ($1,140,682,011)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/The-Lord-of-the-Rings-The-Return-of-the-King.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Peter Jackson took a huge risk with <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em> trilogy.
