Turtle Rock Studios surprised the gaming populace with the reveal of\u00a0its upcoming game Back 4 Blood<\/em><\/strong> releasing this year. Back 4 Blood<\/em> was announced during the Game Awards 2020<\/a>\u00a0this past December, and shares plenty\u00a0in common with the creators’ previous experience developing\u00a0Left 4 Dead<\/em>\u00a0games.<\/p>\n

Being a\u00a0spiritual successor,\u00a0Back 4 Blood<\/em><\/a> will be incorporating several\u00a0features from\u00a0Valve’s popular\u00a0co-op zombie shooter\u00a0series. Some features carrying over include a cast of four survivors as playable characters facing undead hordes. Players will face a range of enemies\u00a0from common to special infected, and\u00a0Back 4 Blood<\/em> will apparently add\u00a0the “game director” feature from the Left 4 Dead<\/em> series as well.<\/p>\n

Left 4 Dead’s<\/em> game director feature utilized an artificial intelligence nicknamed “the Director”\u00a0to manage level-pacing, item placements, and enemy spawn rates. Allowing the game director to spawn enemies and items in different areas\u00a0instead of at fixed locations\u00a0mixes things up for each level.\u00a0The game director\u00a0added a lot of\u00a0replayability\u00a0to Left 4 Dead,<\/em> and Turtle Rock is bringing that into Back 4 Blood’s <\/em>familiar\u00a0gameplay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Turtle Rock will be expanding on the game director idea by adding a\u00a0new mechanic called\u00a0Corruption Cards. The Corruption Cards will be used at the beginning of each level by the director\u00a0to either buff up infected enemies or add more obstacles for the players to deal with. The cards can also change the map’s atmosphere by affecting visibility and making the environment foggy, or it can add new zombie enemies to the mix, whether it’s regular\u00a0zombies or the large Ogre from Back 4 Blood’s<\/em>\u00a0cinematic trailer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Players will get their own deck\u00a0of cards to counter the game director’s Corruption Cards, which can affect their health, damage, and stamina. They can mix and match their cards and try various combinations, and Turtle Rock Studios says\u00a0it plans to expand upon the core game mechanics from\u00a0Left 4 Dead<\/em> for Back 4 Blood<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is part of Turtle Rock Studio’s efforts to have Back 4 Blood<\/em> evolve as a title over time. Turtle Rock\u00a0said it intends to do more with this new game and continue to push the genre forward, which includes bringing back some features from past\u00a0games like the game director.<\/p>\n

For example, players can\u00a0control\u00a0the Back 4 Blood’s<\/em> new zombies<\/a>, specifically the special mutated zombies, similar to Left 4 Dead’s<\/em> Versus Mode. This includes\u00a0the lumbering Bruisers, the four-armed pouncing Hockers, or the acid-spitting\u00a0Retches that can each impact gameplay differently. Overall, Turtle Rock’s goal is to make sure no player’s experience in Back 4 Blood<\/em> is ever the same.<\/p>\n

Back 4 Blood<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is set to release June 22, 2021 for\u00a0PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X\/S.<\/p>\n
