Open-worlds offer players an incredible level of freedom with a license to explore the map&#8217;s secrets and side quests; appealing to players who grew tired of linear stages littered with invisible walls.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/open-world-games-beaten-fast\/\">10 Open-World Games That Can Be Beaten Surprisingly Fast<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite the many upsides of open-world games, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/open-world-games-better-as-linear-action-games-mass-effect-andromeda-sniper-ghost-warrior-3-far-cry-5\/\">there are also several drawbacks<\/a>. Many open-world games have been criticized for having numerous\u00a0glitches, poorly formed stories, or weak side-quests that feel like afterthoughts. 2020 has once again seen many open-world games release that failed to live up to their high expectations, as well as some excellent titles that were overshadowed due to how crowded the genre has become.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>(Too Much Love)\u00a0Maneater<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/maneater-wallpaper.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Maneater\/\"><em>Maneater<\/em><\/a> was<em>\u00a0<\/em>released in May 2020 and is a classic case of a great idea lacking great execution. The open-world game takes players underwater and puts them in control of a bull shark looking for revenge on a mother-killing hunter.<\/p>\n<p>The game struggled to impress critics, exemplified by its Metascores that range between 68 and 71. Along with some <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/big-problems-open-world-video-games\/\">typical open-world technical issues<\/a>, the game suffered from a poor camera and weak combat.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>(Not Enough Love)\u00a0Spider-Man: Miles Morales<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/spider-man-miles-morales-peter-parker.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Spider-Man:%20Miles%20Morales\/\">Spider-Man: Miles Morales<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>narrowly makes it onto this list as <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/spiderman-vs-ghost-tsuhima-best-sony-exclusive-open-world-game\/\">the excellent action-adventure game<\/a> did sell well and received plenty of plaudits; though it earns a spot on this list as it somewhat fell through the cracks of the gaming industry&#8217;s main attention due to other key news like\u00a0<em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em>&#8216;s delay, the PlayStation 5&#8217;s dodgy launch, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/microsoft-buying-bethesda-hilarious-memes\/\">Microsoft&#8217;s acquisition of Bethesda<\/a>, taking the limelight.<\/p>\n<p><em> Spider-Man: Miles Morales\u00a0<\/em>probably won&#8217;t be listed among the PlayStation 5&#8217;s very best titles once its lifecycle comes to an end, though it&#8217;s a brilliant game that deserved time in the spotlight which it never truly received.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>(Too Much Love)\u00a0Watch Dogs: Legion<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/watch-dogs-legion-big-ben.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>For the third time in a row, Ubisoft has struggled to live up to the high expectations that its latest\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/watch%20dogs\/\">Watch Dogs<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>title has received.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-open-world-rpgs-not-skyrim-video-games\/\">10 Best Open-World RPGs That Aren&#8217;t Skyrim<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0the original\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/assassins%20creed\/\">Assassin&#8217;s Creed<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>game hit shelves, it was seen as a disappointment but one with\u00a0tons of potential; the series&#8217; potential was realized with the next entry,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/assassins%20creed%202\/\">Assassin&#8217;s Creed II<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>Sadly, the\u00a0<em>Watch Dogs\u00a0<\/em>series still hasn&#8217;t had its\u00a0<em>Assassin&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em><em>Creed\u00a0<\/em><em>II\u00a0<\/em>moment, and with three lackluster releases in a row, Ubisoft may be ready to pull the plug.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>(Not Enough Love)\u00a0Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/xenoblade-chronicles-definitive-edition-gaur-plains.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Xenoblade%20Chronicles\/\">Xenoblade Chronicles<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was<em>\u00a0<\/em>originally released on the Nintendo Wii in 2010 and has the console&#8217;s joint-seventh highest Metascore at 92.<\/p>\n<p>The game was remastered on the Nintendo Switch in 2020 but sadly struggled to capture the attention of the industry.\u00a0<em>Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition\u00a0<\/em>is an excellent example of how remasters should be done as it makes a generous amount of changes including a remastered soundtrack, improved interface, and adds a new scenario.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>(Too Much Love)\u00a0Assassin&#8217;s Creed Valhalla<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/assassins-creed-valhalla-settlement.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Like most\u00a0<em>Assassin&#8217;s Creed\u00a0<\/em>games, there&#8217;s a lot to love about\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Assassin's%20Creed:%20Valhalla\/\">Assassin&#8217;s Creed: Valhalla<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>However, another similarity that it has to Ubisoft&#8217;s juggernaut series, is that if you&#8217;ve played one you&#8217;ve basically played them all.<\/p>\n<p>Ubisoft found joy in\u00a0CD Projekt&#8217;s misery when the Polish company&#8217;s delay of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Cyberpunk%202077\/\">Cyberpunk 2077<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>handed an audience to\u00a0<em>Assassin&#8217;s Creed: Valhalla\u00a0<\/em>on a plate.\u00a0<em>Valhalla\u00a0<\/em>undoubtedly would have still succeeded without\u00a0<em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em>&#8216;s delay, though it&#8217;s hard to deny that it gave the game an extra dose of attention that it wouldn&#8217;t have received otherwise.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>(Not Enough Love)\u00a0Ghost of Tsushima<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/ghost-of-tsushima-jin-flute-at-shinto-shrine.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Sucker Punch Productions&#8217;\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Ghost%20of%20Tsushima\/\">Ghost of Tsushima<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was<em>\u00a0<\/em>released <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-playstation-4-exclusive-open-world-games\/\">exclusively on the PlayStation 4<\/a> in July 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The reason why the game appears in the Not Enough Love category is that it was frequently overlooked by award panels.\u00a0<em>Ghost of Tsushima\u00a0<\/em>was nominated for numerous highly-regarded awards such as <a href=\"https:\/\/thegameawards.com\/nominees\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Game Awards&#8217;<\/a> Game of the Year and Best Action\/Adventure Game, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesradar.com\/every-winner-at-the-golden-joystick-awards-2020\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Golden Joystick&#8217;s<\/a> PlayStation Game of the Year. Sony Interactive Entertainment may be wishing that they released the game a different year as all three awards went to Naughty Dog&#8217;s divisive sequel to\u00a0<em>The Last of Us.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>(Too Much Love) Immortals Fenyx Rising<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/immortals-fenyx-rising-horseback.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The idea behind Ubisoft&#8217;s<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Immortals%20Fenyx%20Rising\/\"> Immortals Fenyx Rising<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was formulated during the development of\u00a0<em>Assassin&#8217;s Creed Odyssey\u00a0<\/em>when a glitch caused the characters to have <a href=\"https:\/\/gameranx.com\/updates\/id\/209050\/article\/immortals-fenyx-rising-was-inspired-by-an-assassins-creed-odyssey-bug\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a cyclops-like appearance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/open-world-games-not-big-skyrim\/\">10 Open-World Games To Play If Skyrim Is Too Big For You<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Immortals Fenyx Rising<\/em> received plenty of attention from gamers without a Wii U or Nintendo Switch when it became clear that the game was trying to emulate the success of Nintendo&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/The%20Legend%20of%20Zelda:%20Breath%20of%20the%20Wild\/\">The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>Sadly, the lofty expectations proved to be out of reach for\u00a0<em>Immortal Feynx Rising,\u00a0<\/em>which was certainly not a bad game but failed to impress nonetheless.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>(Not Enough Love)\u00a0Ori and the Will of the Wisps<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/ori-will-of-the-wisps-switch.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The Metroidvania genre saw an unexpected resurgence in the mid-2010s, with excellent games like\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Hollow%20Knight\/\">Hollow Knight<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Ori%20and%20the%20Blind%20Forest\/\">Ori and the Blind Forest<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Dead%20Cells\/\">Dead Cells<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>breathing new life into the once-forgotten style of game.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Ori%20and%20the%20Will%20of%20the%20Wisps\/\"><em>Ori and the Will\u00a0<\/em><\/a><em>of the Wisps\u00a0<\/em>differentiated itself from its predecessor with its open-world mechanics, a rarity of the platforming genre. Developer&#8217;s Moon Studios filled their excellent Metroidvania map\u00a0with tons of side quests that encouraged players to explore every inch of the game&#8217;s beautiful but dangerous world.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>(Too Much Love) Cyberpunk 2077<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/bug-cyberpunk.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Many people guessed that\u00a0<em>Cyberpunk 2077\u00a0<\/em>wouldn&#8217;t live up to the extreme hype behind it, but not many predicted the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/cyberpunk-2077-ps4-games-buggy-launch\/\">utter disaster that the game&#8217;s launch truly was<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alarm bells soon started to ring when CD Projekt only allowed critics to review the PC iteration for the game. Fears were temporarily subsided when the game&#8217;s initial Metascore reached an excellent 91, though everything came crashing down shortly after. It soon became apparent that the game was unfinished, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/cyberpunk-2077-game-fixes\/\">negative feedback from fans and critics<\/a> began flowing when the console iterations hit stores.<\/p>\n<p>The game now has a PC Metascore of 86, with PS4 and Xbox One scores of 55 and 61.\u00a0CD Projekt and CD Projekt Red could still save the game with a <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/no-mans-sky\/\">No Man&#8217;s Sky<\/a>&#8211;<\/em>like resurgence, but as it stands\u00a0<em>Cyberpunk 2077 <\/em>appears to be yet another example of why games shouldn&#8217;t be overhyped\u00a0before releasing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>(Not Enough Love)\u00a0Yakuza: Like a Dragon<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Unfortunately, almost every\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Yakuza\/\">Yakuza<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>game could be classed as not getting enough love when releasing in the west. The series doesn&#8217;t hide its Japanese influences to appeal to western audiences like many games and instead opts to embrace them.
