After joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the writer of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness<\/em> and creator of Disney Plus’ Loki<\/em><\/strong> series,\u00a0Michael Waldron is set to venture to a galaxy far, far, away. Lucasfilm has tapped Waldron to pen the screenplay for the developing Star Wars<\/a> film produced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.<\/p>\n

With the Skywalker saga now complete following the release of The Rise of Skywalker<\/em>, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is preparing a new Star Wars<\/em> era films with a slate of projects for Disney Plus and features\u00a0exploring new corners of the fictional universe. Among the projects being developed at Lucasfilm is a\u00a0Star Wars<\/em> film produced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige<\/a>,\u00a0who first discussed the possibility of contributing to the franchise after a summer 2019 meeting with Kennedy and\u00a0Disney co-chairmen Alan Horn and Alan Bergman.<\/p>\n

Deadline<\/em> reports Waldron will pen the script for Feige’s Star Wars<\/em> film as part of a recent deal he signed with Disney. Furthermore, the terms of the deal mean Waldron will likely be brought back in some capacity for\u00a0a second season of Loki<\/em>. The outlet posits that the rare deal is a sign of Disney’s confidence in Waldron and his attachment to the Star Wars<\/em> film adds momentum to the project, which has\u00a0yet to begin production or receive a release date. Known for producing multiple episodes of Dan Harmon’s Rick and Morty<\/em><\/a>, Waldron joined the Disney family as the\u00a0head writer and executive producer of Loki<\/em>\u00a0in 2019 before being tapped to rewrite the script for Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Both Loki<\/em> and the Doctor Strange s<\/em>equel are expected to factor heavily into Marvel Studios’ plans to explore the multiverse and alternate worlds in the MCU franchise. While Loki<\/em> will see Tom Hiddleston reprise his role<\/a> as the God of Mischief, the series will focus on the version of the character who escaped custody after the battle of New York due to the time-traveling\u00a0exploits of the Avengers in Endgame<\/em>. The events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness<\/em>, on the other hand, will be set up by Disney Plus’ WandaVision<\/em>, in which Scarlet Witch and Vision find themselves living in an alternate reality reminiscent of classic television sitcoms.<\/p>\n

As for the Star Wars<\/em> franchise, Kennedy recently announced 10 television projects being developed for Disney Plus and a feature film from Wonder Woman 1984<\/em> director Patty Jenkins titled Rogue Squadron<\/em><\/a>. Curiously, an update on Feige’s Star Wars<\/em> film was not provided during the same presentation for Disney’s Investor Day.<\/p>\n

Also absent from the presentation was any mention of the previously announced Star Wars<\/em> trilogy from Rian Johnson<\/a>. While there has not been any official news regarding the trilogy’s future, fans suspect the divisive response to Johnson’s The Last Jedi <\/em>may have hindered the project’s chances of moving forward.<\/p>\n

Loki<\/em><\/strong> is scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus in May 2021.<\/p>\n
