The Forever Purge<\/em><\/strong> is set to be the fifth and final movie in the\u00a0Purge\u00a0<\/em>franchise, and in order to give the series a proper conclusion, the creators hope to delve deeper into the themes that inspired the series. During a\u00a0discussion with Total Film<\/em>, James DeMonaco and Everardo Gout, the creator and director respectively, explained that they want the film to be very clear on how they feel about current events.<\/p>\n

The original film,\u00a0The Purge<\/em>, was a horror film<\/a> set inside a single family’s house during a night of lawlessness. Though the film itself wasn’t regarded as fantastic, it introduced the concept of “The Purge,” a single night, once a year, where all crime was legal. In the universe of\u00a0The Purge,<\/em> the government had instituted the\u00a0event as a way of controlling crime under the theory that it would keep people complacent during the rest of the year.<\/p>\n

That premise proved to be a big hit with audiences, and\u00a0since the moderate success of the first film<\/a>, there have been four other films released in the franchise, as well as two seasons of a TV show. These projects would lean much more heavily into exploring the Purge as an event, the reasons it existed in-universe, and the effect it had on the country.<\/p>\n

This latest film,\u00a0The Forever Purge\u00a0<\/em>is set as a sequel to\u00a0The Purge: Election Year<\/em><\/a>, and sees its protagonists attempting to find safety at a ranch in Texas, only to wind up in danger when a group of outsiders decides to keep purging beyond the designated time.<\/p>\n

Everardo Gout\u00a0says that DeMonaco wanted the film to be “crystal clear” about his opinion on the ongoing violence and unrest in the world, and that he hopes the film will be able to bring that message across effectively:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s dystopian, but he\u2019s trying to get us to look in the mirror. It makes you think, \u2018S***, if I get pushed into a corner, would I do the same?\u2019 Once you open that door, how do you close it again?\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether or not the final\u00a0Purge<\/em> film<\/a> actually manages to bring that message across, of course, will all be down to execution. Whether the film lives up to not only its premise but the legacy of the previous movies, will be seen when it finally hits theaters later this year.<\/p>\n

The Forever Purge<\/em><\/strong> is scheduled to release on July 9th of 2021.<\/p>\n
