It’s widely believed that Dark Souls<\/em><\/a> bosses are the epitome of difficulty in video games.<\/a>\u00a0And not only is the plot of Dark Souls<\/em> deeply convoluted, but the gameplay is\u00a0exceedingly tricky. The series’ boss fights are renowned for their grueling nature.<\/p>\n

The PlayStation 4<\/a> is near the end of its lifespan, with only a handful of games yet to come. Let’s go over some of the most challenging games the system has to offer. Expect to die, then die again.<\/a> Each of these games is unique, but all share that they are harder than\u00a0Dark Souls.<\/em><\/p>\n

Updated January 8th, 2020 by Jack Pursey:<\/em><\/strong> The influence that\u00a02011’s\u00a0Dark Souls<\/em><\/a>\u00a0has had on the gaming industry continues to be seen today. FromSoftware disregarded the excessive hand-holding that was becoming common in triple-A titles and reminded players how enjoyable and rewarding the “show don’t tell”\u00a0 style that was popular in the 90s could still be. The Soulsborne series’ influence can be seen throughout the PS4’s lifespan, so we’ve decided to expand this list by a further five entries to recognize the games that provided an even tougher challenge than the revolutionary action-RPG.<\/p>\n

14 <\/span>Monster Hunter: World<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Released in 2018,\u00a0Monster Hunter: World\u00a0<\/em>has quickly become one of the series’ most beloved entries. This is not only exemplified by the game’s 90 Metascore<\/a>, but also by the numerous accolades that it won;\u00a0Monster Hunter World<\/em>‘s most notable awards were the Best RPG prize from the D.I.C.E. Awards<\/a> and The Game Awards<\/a>, as well as Game of the Year from the Famitsu Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Monster Hunter: World\u00a0<\/em>continues the series’ tradition of featuring brutally difficult monsters, to ensure that players aren’t slacking when it comes to looting resources and upgrading armor.<\/p>\n

13 <\/span>Remnant: From The Ashes<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Considering that\u00a0Remnant: From The Ashes\u00a0<\/em>has been commonly branded as “Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>with guns”, it should come as little surprise that the suitably named Gunfire Games didn’t hold back when it came to cranking up the difficulty.<\/p>\n

Much like\u00a0Dark Souls,\u00a0<\/em>the game’s difficulty predominantly comes from its numerous boss fights, though it differentiates itself from FromSoftware’s game with its randomly generated world. The randomly generated world offers great replay value and makes its fantastic co-op feature more exciting.<\/p>\n

12 <\/span>Grim Fandango Remastered<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Fans of the point and click genre were given a few unexpected treats during the PS4 and Xbox One era, with classic titles like\u00a0Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle,<\/em> and\u00a0Full Throttle\u00a0<\/i>receiving remastered releases.<\/p>\n

Released at the very end of the point and click genre’s popularity cycle,\u00a0Grim Fandango<\/em>\u00a0provided a fittingly difficult challenge to cap off the painfully tricky puzzle genre<\/a>. At a time without YouTube walkthroughs and IGN guides, players were left almost entirely on their own to solve the mind-boggling puzzles. The extreme difficulty wasn’t just LucasArts being a bit cruel though, as it served two significant purposes. Firstly, it elongated the game’s runtime, and secondly, it encouraged people to buy guidebooks or call pay-per-minute helplines that were available to stuck players.<\/p>\n

11 <\/span>Cuphead<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Studio MDHR’s\u00a0Cuphead\u00a0<\/em>didn’t hold back on the nostalgia, not only with its excellent art design inspired by 1930s cartoons but also because of its brutal 80s side-scrolling difficulty.<\/p>\n

Although the game has a few run and gun levels dotted throughout, it is predominantly a boss rush from start to finish. Studio MDHR didn’t lower the challenge that the bosses posed because of this and instead ramped the difficulty up to provide one of modern gaming’s toughest side-scrolling challenges.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Respawn Entertainment and EA didn’t hide their influences with their recent critically acclaimed\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>title, as the game essentially combined\u00a0the winning formulas of\u00a0the Soulsborne games<\/a> with a modern take on the Metroidvania genre.<\/p>\n

To ensure that the game appealed to\u00a0Star Wars’\u00a0<\/em>huge audience, the game understandably had to differentiate itself from\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>by adding difficulty levels, ensuring that casual gamers didn’t become too frustrated. These difficulty levels weren’t only geared towards players looking to make the game easier though, as the Jedi Grandmaster difficulty provides one of the toughest challenges ever seen in a major AAA release.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Nioh 2<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Albeit the consensus is that Nioh 2<\/em><\/a> is more relaxed than its predecessor, it is a difficult game. Nioh 2<\/em> has one of the best (if not the best) co-op systems we’ve seen in a\u00a0Souls<\/em>-like<\/a> thus far. Playing the game entirely in co-op might be easier than\u00a0Dark Souls<\/em>, even if the difference is close.<\/p>\n

Fighting bosses like the poisonous snake boss Yatsu-no-Kami solo is painstaking. Nioh 2<\/em> is harder than Dark Souls<\/em> if played solo.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Devil May Cry 5<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Devil May Cry 5<\/em><\/a>\u00a0may not have launched as a PlayStation exclusive like many of its predecessors, yet it’s hard to deny that it’s a heart-racing, action-packed game. There is a steep learning curve for\u00a0Devil May Cry 5,\u00a0<\/em>which is\u00a0considered harder than\u00a0Dark Souls<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The first Dark Souls<\/em> has a comparable learning curve. Hands down,\u00a0Devil May Cry V<\/em>\u00a0is more difficult than\u00a0Dark Souls 2<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Dark Souls 3\u00a0<\/em>if\u00a0gamers already played the first\u00a0Dark Souls.\u00a0<\/em>Playing previous\u00a0Devil May Cry<\/em>\u00a0games doesn’t make this game any easier.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Super Meat Boy<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

There is nothing ordinary about\u00a0Super Meat Boy<\/em>.<\/a>\u00a0The player plays as a Head Crab character who has a mighty fist. They’ll have to be tough as nails to get through this arduous 2D platformer.<\/a><\/p>\n

It requires quick reflexes, tenacity, and\u00a0advanced gaming tactics. Super Meat Boy<\/em> is available on PlayStation 4, and many would agree it’s way harder than Dark Souls.<\/em><\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Bloodborne<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Bloodborne<\/em> is like the second cousin twice removed of Dark Souls<\/em>. It takes on more horrific themes than Dark Souls,<\/em> which is also a gloomy game. Bloodborne<\/em> was released after Dark Souls 2<\/em> and is considered more difficult than Dark Souls<\/em>. Finding Blood Vials (healing potions) is not as easy as it is in Dark Souls<\/em>. Dark Souls<\/em>‘ Estus Flasks return every time\u00a0players rest at a Bonfire, whereas\u00a0they have to find Blood Vials in Bloodborne.<\/em><\/p>\n

The pacing of Bloodborne<\/em>\u00a0makes it feel like it is harder than Dark Souls<\/em>. Both are from the action role-playing genre, but the grim nature of Bloodborne<\/em> and its tedious boss fights make it more of a challenge.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>The Messenger<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This hidden PlayStation 4 gem<\/a> is a must-play for fans of the Metroidvania sub-genre.<\/a> It’s an indie title, but there was a tremendous amount of effort that went into bringing a spectacular experience.<\/p>\n

Made by a small group of developers, the game places players on a time-traveling adventure. Just be warned, The Messenger<\/em> is way harder than\u00a0Dark Souls<\/em>. It will bring the most experienced\u00a0Soulsborne<\/em> players to a grinding halt mid-game because of its difficulty.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Titan Souls<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Dark Souls<\/em> was a rough game, but taking a crack at Titan Souls\u00a0<\/em>is even tougher. Like Dark Souls<\/em>, dying is commonplace in this game. It’s a rinse and repeat type of game where\u00a0players have to learn from mistakes or give up, whichever comes first.<\/p>\n

The game’s colossal boss fights make it exceptional.\u00a0Players\u00a0study the movements of the bosses, much like in Dark Souls<\/em>. This game is much like a 2D version of Dark Souls<\/em>\u2014but way harder!<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>The Witness<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Comparing\u00a0The Witness<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Dark Souls<\/em>\u00a0is like comparing apples to oranges. However, with both games being some of the most difficult of their genre, it makes sense to include\u00a0The Witness<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Witness<\/em>\u00a0is a first-person puzzle game with a vibrant, beautiful environment to explore. Solving puzzles unlocks new areas of this open-world island. The game is mystifying and filled with content to keep\u00a0players engaged for hours on end. All the Dark Souls<\/em> experience in the world won’t help\u00a0anyone\u00a0beat this near-impossible game.<\/a><\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice<\/h2>\n

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice<\/em><\/a> is a spiritual successor to Dark Souls.<\/em> Made by the same developer, the game was lauded for its challenging gameplay, among other reasons.<\/p>\n

Facing a grueling boss like\u00a0Lady\u00a0Butterfly is a monumental task on its own. It was really difficult when\u00a0players had to face the Guardian Ape, but\u00a0it’s even more baffling when\u00a0players had to face two.\u00a0Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice<\/em> is one of the most excellent current-gen games, even if it’s harder than Dark Souls.<\/em><\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Nioh<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The difficulty of Nioh<\/a>‘s<\/em> sequel<\/a>\u00a0is obvious, but what about the original? Like the Dark Souls<\/em> series, Nioh<\/em>‘s sequel is easier. Why the trend for Souls<\/em>-likes is gravitating towards easier to beat games is unknown.<\/p>\n

Perhaps developers like Team Ninja<\/a> and FromSoftware<\/a> are trying to appeal to a broader player base. Nevertheless, Nioh<\/em> is a more challenging game than Dark Souls.\u00a0<\/em>It’s a game that\u00a0players will probably quit before finishing.<\/p>\n
