Christmas proved to be a boon for Pokemon fans and the franchise. The latest movie\u00a0Pok\u00e9mon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle<\/em><\/strong> opened in Japan on Christmas Day and ended the weekend\u00a0among the top three in the box office, closing out 2020 on a high note for the beloved franchise.<\/p>\n

Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train <\/span><\/em>took the No. 1 spot and finished the holiday weekend on top for an 11th straight week followed by\u00a0<\/span>Pok\u00e9mon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle<\/em>, which\u00a0slid into second place\u00a0in its opening weekend. Rounding out the top 3<\/a> was\u00a0the live-action historical comedy New Interpretation Record.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Pok\u00e9mon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle<\/em> had a long journey before releasing in 375 theaters throughout Japan. TOHO originally planned<\/a> to open the film on July 10, but staff delayed the film to release on Christmas due to the spread of coronavirus. The film will open in 2021 out west but does not have a definitive release date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This particular movie ties into the release of Pok\u00e9mon Sword and Shield<\/em>. It is centered around the legendary Pokemon from the game Zarude and exists within an alternate timeline established by Pok\u00e9mon the Movie: I Choose You!<\/em>\u00a0One of the intriguing storylines<\/a> to come out about this movie is hints about the father of series lead Ash Ketchum, who is oft speculated about by fans. The mystery of who Ash\u2019s dad is may not be solved in this movie, but the director Tetsuo Yajima has hinted that it will be a subject in this movie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The latest Pok\u00e9mon movie<\/a>\u00a0is one of a slew of franchises to have their theatrical releases\u00a0during the final months of 2020 and the beginning of 2021. Demon Slayer,<\/em> of course<\/a>, had been the first and most successful to release their movie in October with\u00a0Pok\u00e9mon: Secrets of the Jungle<\/em> not far behind in December. January and February\u00a0will see the release of both Sailor Moon: Eternal <\/em>movies<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Not every movie will have the cultural impact that Demon Slayer has had, but if the Pok\u00e9mon movie can tap into the many fans that have followed the franchise over the years it\u2019ll find success at the box office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
