There once was a time when\u00a0Killzone<\/em><\/strong> was one of Sony’s top gaming franchises. However, there hasn’t been a new\u00a0Killzone<\/em><\/a> game released since 2013’s\u00a0Killzone: Shadow Fall<\/em>, which was a launch title for the PS4, and Guerrilla Games\u00a0has lately been focused entirely on the\u00a0Horizon<\/em> series. Those holding out hope that Sony may still return to the\u00a0Killzone<\/em> franchise at some point soon may want to rein in their expectations, as the franchise’s official website has been shut down.<\/p>\n

Those that try to visit the official\u00a0Killzone<\/em> website will be treated by a message explaining that, from now on, it will redirect to the PlayStation website instead. The message says that this change will not impact the online multiplayer modes in the\u00a0Killzone<\/em> games, and players will still be able to get ranking data and statistics in both\u00a0Killzone: Mercenary<\/em> on PS Vita and\u00a0Killzone: Shadow Fall<\/em><\/a>. However, it is no longer possible to create or manage\u00a0Killzone: Shadow Fall<\/em> clans, as that was handled through the website.<\/p>\n

The message ends with Guerrilla Games<\/a> thanking fans for their enthusiasm and support. It makes no indication that the\u00a0Killzone<\/em> franchise may still return one day, and it doesn’t offer any assurance that the website closure doesn’t mean that the\u00a0Killzone<\/em> franchise itself is effectively dead.<\/p>\n

The last time fans heard anything about the\u00a0Killzone<\/em> franchise was back in 2017, when Guerrilla Games co-founder\u00a0Hermen Hulst<\/a> touched on the subject. Hulst indicated that Guerrilla Games hadn’t made any concrete plans about the future of the\u00a0Killzone<\/em> franchise. However, with Guerrilla Games’ next project being\u00a0Horizon Forbidden West<\/em><\/a>, it seems safe to say that if a new\u00a0Killzone<\/em> game is a possibility, it will be years before fans hear or see anything about it.<\/p>\n

In the years since Hulst’s comments, PlayStation has moved further away from\u00a0Killzone<\/em>. In May of 2020, the\u00a0Killzone<\/em> multiplayer servers were shut down at random for a limited time before being restored. Then just last month, the PlayStation website updated its page about its studios and the franchises they are known for, mentioning Guerrilla Games alongside\u00a0Horizon<\/em><\/a> and ignoring the\u00a0Killzone<\/em> franchise completely.<\/p>\n

It’s unclear why Sony seems to want to move on from the\u00a0Killzone<\/em> franchise.\u00a0Killzone: Shadow Fall<\/em> was a sales success, selling millions of copies, even though it wasn’t exactly a critical darling. Maybe PlayStation and Guerrilla will return to the\u00a0Killzone<\/em> franchise at some point down the line, but fans shouldn’t hold their breath for an announcement anytime soon.<\/p>\n
