At the heart of it all, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sims <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is supposed to be a life simulator, meaning that players can mimic their lives within the game or recreate others\u2019 lives that they may not have experienced themselves. Its latest iteration, <\/span><b><i>The Sims 4<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has finally updated its skin tones, for example, so all players can create accurate depictions of themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it took a bit of time for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-sims-4\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sims 4<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to update its skin tones from swatches to a color slider, it wasn\u2019t the first time the game took care to include other cultures. Whether it was a base game update or full-fledged expansion pack, the developer has tried its best to incorporate other cultures and practices so all players of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sims 4 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feel included. Cultural appropriation is when dominant societal groups incorrectly adopt the cultural practices, customs, etc., of another (typically minority) group. This adoption leads to misunderstanding of the culture being appropriated and tends to make a mockery of the culture\u2019s traditional practices, even if that wasn\u2019t the intention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explanations of cultural appropriation often <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sims-4-teases-spooky-stuff-pack-dlc\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">circulate on the internet around Halloween<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because it\u2019s a holiday meant for costumes, and people often need reminders of what is and isn\u2019t an offensive ensemble. Dressing like an Indigenous person and wearing traditional headdresses for Halloween is offensive because it treats one of their cultural practices (wearing headdresses to show status and honor) as a costume rather than an age-old custom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is only one example of the larger issue of cultural appropriation as a whole, but offensive \u201ccostumes\u201d can also include dressing like a geisha when not of Japanese descent or wearing an oversized sombrero and poncho to dress \u201clike a Mexican.\u201d Geisha are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pokemon-movie-number-2-japan-box-office-2020\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly regarded in Japanese culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as artists, and only harmful caricatures depict people from Mexico as wearing ponchos and oversized sombreros.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-sims-4-skin-tone-update-good-bad\/\"><b>The Sims 4 Skin Tone Update Is Great, But Not Flawless<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/sims-4-more-2020-expansion-packs.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sims 4 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has included a variety of different items to celebrate various cultures in the game. Some came as free base game updates, while others were included in DLC expansion packs. Though players have typically been able to find CC (Custom Content) that adds specific items from their culture into the game, it\u2019s important to have items available from the developer itself because console players cannot use CC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once again, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-sims-4-hispanic-heritage-skin-tone-update-controversy-explained\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s crucial that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sims 4 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continues to incorporate other cultures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the game so all players feel seen and represented. However, other players who are not part of that culture walk a fine line with these items being in the game. It potentially creates a mentality of whether or not the player is \u201callowed\u201d to use different clothing or Build\/Buy mode items.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no one hovering over players\u2019 shoulders to prevent them from using items that are not found in their culture, but socially aware players may struggle with what is \u201cright\u201d and \u201cwrong\u201d in this scenario. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/sims-4-2020-changes\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the premise of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sims <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is its appeal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a life simulator\u2014the lives players depict don\u2019t have to mimic their own exactly. As long as players are making respectful Sims that represent different cultures (and not harmful caricatures), there\u2019s no reason they should consider culturally specific items \u201coff limits.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sims <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is about playing with life, and the whole point is experimenting in different ways and creating unique Sims with their own stories and personalities. As it continues to advance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-sims-4-2021-updates-dlc-sims-5\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sims 4<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should absolutely add more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> culturally specific content to create a well-rounded environment for all players.
