With lengthy learning curves and an open-ended format, many <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/impossible-retro-80s-games\/\">&#8217;80s games are deemed impossible to beat.<\/a> Here are some of the most memorable game releases of the &#8217;80s.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Pac-Man (1980)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/pac-man-.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The original\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/pac-man\/\"><em>Pac-Man<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is a maze arcade game that was released in 1980. It stood out from other games because of its RGB color display, which happened to be revolutionary at the time. <em>Pac-Man<\/em>&#8216;s colorful appearance appealed to a broader demographic, allowing it to flourish in the market. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pac-man-facts-trivia\/\">The hockey-puck shaped main character<\/a> is considered the mascot of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/bandai-namco\/\">Bandia Namco<\/a> today. Eating all the dots while avoiding four ghosts proves to be a grueling yet rewarding task.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Final Fantasy (1987)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/final-fantasy.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released by Square before the Square Enix merger,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/final-fantasy\/\"><em>Final Fantasy<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was a role-playing game <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/open-world-rpgs-best-quests\/\">before role-playing games were trendy.<\/a> It was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1987. Some players were frustrated by the amount of exploration required to find battles, but the graphics were good for the time.\u00a0<em>Final Fantasy\u00a0<\/em>follows four young people who possess elemental orbs.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Lunar Jetman (1983)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/lunar-jetman.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Lunar Jetman<\/em> was a phenomenon back in its day. It&#8217;s a side-scrolling shooter that pits you against aliens to save the human race. As the first sequel game in its series, the game has a slightly longer learning curve than its predecessor. The range of colors was praiseworthy, and the gameplay still holds up by today&#8217;s standards. This game is included in 2015&#8217;s <em>Rare Replay<\/em> compilation for Xbox One.<em> Lunar Jetman<\/em> remastered in HD has never looked better.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>The Legend Of Zelda (1986)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-legend-of-zelda-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The original\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-legend-of-zelda\/\"><em>The Legend of Zelda<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System way back in 1986. The <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/legend-zelda-link-best-versions-ranked\/\">game still stars Link as the protagonist,<\/a> but the gameplay was vastly different. It can be played on the NES Classic Edition or the Nintendo Switch&#8217;s NES Switch Online catalog.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Contra (1987)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/contra.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Back in the &#8217;80s, many of the games available for purchase had steep learning curves.\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/contra\/\">Contra<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/games-for-fans-of-cuphead-alien-hominid-mega-man-castlevania\/\">run and gun game,<\/a> which was initially played on a coin-operated arcade machine. Later, the game was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System. From Konami,\u00a0<em>Contra<\/em>\u00a0was action-packed and filled with plenty of surprises. This &#8217;80s game helped to define the era of gaming and is part of a genre with too few releases today.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Metroid (1986)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/metroid.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>This scrolling shooter released for the Famicom Disk System in 1986, re-releasing a year later for the Nintendo Entertainment System.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/metroid\/\"><em>Metroid<\/em><\/a>\u00a0stood out for its attention to detail in graphics and science-fiction themes. This is one of the first video games in history to feature a female hero. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/metroid-facts-about-samus-aran\/\">Samus Aran fights bosses Kraid and Ridley using a Power Suit<\/a> on the planet Zebes. Only a real &#8217;80s kid has beaten this game. The game&#8217;s\u00a0intricate level design\u00a0is puzzling, to say the least.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Donkey Kong (1981)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/donkey-kong-nes.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The original\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/donkey-kong\/\"><em>Donkey Kong<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was released on arcade systems and later was ported for the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy. Before Donkey Kong became the amiable protagonist of the\u00a0<em>Donkey Kong Country<\/em>\u00a0series, he was a villain in\u00a0<em>Donkey Kong.\u00a0<\/em>The damsel in distress was named Pauline, and the hero was unnamed but was later called Jumpman.
