With the eighth generation of home consoles coming to an end last year,\u00a0it’s safe to say that third-person action-adventures<\/a> ruled the era. The genre of gaming doesn’t look like slowing down either, with\u00a0The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2<\/a>, Elden Ring<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Grand Theft Auto VI<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>being three of the most highly anticipated titles for the\u00a0next generation of gaming.<\/p>\n

Although sword-fighting titles have made up a bulk of the third-person genre with\u00a0The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/a>, Dark Souls 3<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Monster Hunter: World<\/em><\/a>\u00a0leading the way,\u00a0<\/em>shooters have also carved themselves a spot in the popular genre of gaming. The shooter genre<\/a> is historically known for its first-person gameplay<\/a>, though these ten Xbox One<\/a> games may prove pivotal in the genre’s shift to third-person.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Hitman 2 (84)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The seventh main entry into the iconic stealth series\u00a0Hitman<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was released in 2018. IO Interactive, the game’s developer, didn’t try to reinvent the wheel and kept the gameplay similar to its 2016 predecessor. There were a few innovations though, including concussive gadgets that provided players with valuable non-lethal tools; as well as a welcome return to Agent 47’s briefcase, allowing players to inconspicuously carry large weaponry.<\/p>\n

A sequel,\u00a0Hitman 3<\/em>,<\/a> is just around the corner with a scheduled release date of January 21st, 2021.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Gears of War 4 (85)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The\u00a0Gears of War<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series has quickly become one of Xbox Game Studios and Microsoft Studios’ most critically acclaimed IP’s. The first game in the series released at a pivotal time for Microsoft, coming just a few days before the release of the PlayStation 3 to incredibly high praise.<\/p>\n

Gears of War 4<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was the Xbox One’s first main series\u00a0Gears\u00a0<\/em><\/a>of War\u00a0<\/em>entry, and consequently had a large weight of expectations on its shoulders. The game’s appearance on this list proves that the game was a critical success, though its 84 score is still somewhat underwhelming in comparison to the series’ original trilogy.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Gears 5 (85)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The latest\u00a0Gears of War\u00a0<\/em>title dropped the “of war” part of its name but kept much of the gameplay similar to the series’ previous Xbox One and PC game. The game takes place just a few months after the events of\u00a0Gears of War 4,\u00a0<\/em>with Kait Diaz now taking center stage as the main protagonist.<\/a><\/p>\n

Although\u00a0Gears 5<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>again fell short of the original trilogies 90+ Metascores, the game performed well awards-wise, picking up Best Xbox One Game awards from Gamescom<\/a> and the Golden Joysticks Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (85)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Despite being an enormous commercial success, it’s fair to say that\u00a0PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was somewhat shortchanged when considering that it pioneered the battle royale genre’s recent rise.<\/p>\n

Epic Games’\u00a0Fortnite<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was\u00a0<\/em>released almost exactly one year after\u00a0PUBG\u00a0<\/em>and soon dominated the genre of gaming. PUBG Corporation took legal action against Epic Games over the similarity between the two games, though the lawsuit was dropped shortly after<\/a>.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (86)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

One of gaming’s most iconic action-heroes, Lara Croft returned in 2013 with a rebooted series developed by Crystal Dynamics and\u00a0Eidos-Montr\u00e9al and published by Square Enix. The game originally released on the Xbox 360, before coming to Xbox One consoles a year later with remastered visuals and all DLC included.<\/p>\n

The first entry into the rebooted series,\u00a0Tomb Raider<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>created a new origin story for the English hero. Crystal Dynamics’ highly ambitious game seemingly took inspiration from Naughty Dog’s Uncharted<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Last of Us<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchises,\u00a0with its combination of over-the-top adventuring and survival mechanics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Rise of the Tomb Raider (86)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Receiving the exact same score as this list’s previous entry is\u00a0Tomb Raider<\/em>‘s successor\u00a0Rise of the Tomb Raider.<\/em>\u00a0Square Enix’s\u00a0<\/em>Rise of the Tomb Raider <\/em>was\u00a0<\/em>released just two years after its predecessor, despite Square Enix\u00a0naming\u00a0Tomb Raider<\/em>\u00a0(2013)\u00a0<\/em>as one of three games that they felt underperformed sales-wise<\/a>\u00a0(Hitman: Absolution\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Sleeping Dogs\u00a0<\/em>were the other two).<\/p>\n

Despite the commercial disappointment,\u00a0Rise of the Tomb Raider\u00a0<\/em>kept its core gameplay similar to the first rebooted game. Among the minimal changes to the gameplay was the game’s heavier focus on combat, befitting of Lara’s origin story, as it shows that she can now rely on her weaponry skills.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Resident Evil 2 (93)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Although it seems ridiculous now, remakes were often looked down upon in the gaming industry, with critics and audiences predominantly viewing them as low effort cash-grabs. This mindset has drastically changed in recent years, and Golden Joystick’s Ultimate Game of the Year\u00a0<\/a>Resident Evil 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is one of the key game’s to thank for this.<\/p>\n

Capcom did a fantastic job of recapturing the magic of the original\u00a0Resident Evil 2<\/em><\/a>, especially with their iteration of Mr. X who somehow become even more intimidating and terrifying<\/a> than ever before.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (95)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The iconic\u00a0Metal Gear Solid<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series received its latest entry in 2015 with\u00a0Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain<\/em><\/a>, an incredible stealth title that offered players one of the most well designed and immersive open worlds to date.<\/p>\n

Despite the universal praise that the game received,\u00a0Hideo Kojima suggested that the game was unfinished<\/a>\u00a0during an interview with IGN, confirming the suspicion of fans who were dubious about the game’s abrupt ending. With the public breakup of Konami and Kojima Productions in mind, it’s sadly unlikely that the game will ever receive the fleshed out ending that it deserves.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Grand Theft Auto V (97)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Despite releasing at the very end of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3’s lifecycle,\u00a0with players preparing to buy the next generation of console,\u00a0Grand Theft Auto V<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>managed to make an eye-watering $800 million in its first 24 hours<\/a>. The game was re-released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 just over a year after it initially hit stores, with a new first-person mode available.<\/p>\n

Grand Theft Auto V<\/em>\u00a0has continued to make incredible amounts of money for Rockstar thanks to the game’s online mode. Fans of the series seem to have a love-hate relationship with the game’s online feature, as although it has provided excellent content, it is almost certainly the reason why\u00a0Grand Theft Auto VI<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>hasn’t been released yet. Furthermore, with the success of\u00a0the online mode in mind, fans shouldn’t be surprised if\u00a0Grand Theft Auto VI\u00a0<\/em>releases without an offline campaign.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Red Dead Redemption 2 (97)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The\u00a0disappointment over a lack of\u00a0Grand Theft Auto\u00a0<\/em>release on the Xbox One was somewhat subsided by the release of\u00a0Red Dead Redemption 2<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>The game, quite literally, gave\u00a0GTA V\u00a0<\/em>a run for its money, earning a whopping $725 million in its opening weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Red Dead Redemption 2\u00a0<\/em>amazed fans and critics with its generation-defining open-world that offered a level of realism never before seen at such a scale. Furthermore, the game continued its predecessor’s tradition of telling a more serious and often touching narrative<\/a> than is often seen in Rockstar games, with protagonist Arthur Morgan quickly becoming one of gaming’s most beloved anti-heroes.<\/p>\n
