The following ten games are categorized in the review aggregator’s action genre, and all provide fantastic campaigns that will likely be enjoyed for decades to come.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Shadow of the Colossus (91)<\/h2>\n

A high-definition remake of the classic PlayStation 2 game, the\u00a0Shadow of the Colossus<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>PS4 remake was developed by\u00a0Bluepoint Games and successfully recaptured the original’s magic.<\/p>\n

The game is remembered fondly for its deceivingly powerful story\u00a0that centers around the playable character, Wander, as he attempts to defeat numerous colossi in hopes of reviving a girl named Mono.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (92)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>likely would have received an even higher Metascore than 92 if it wasn’t for the fact that CD Projekt’s game was full of bugs on launch.<\/a><\/p>\n

CD Projekt Red’s game is the core reason why fans were so excited\u00a0about\u00a0Cyberpunk 2077<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>years before it released, and why there was so much disappointment around the final product.\u00a0The Witcher 3<\/em> offers one of the best adventures available on the eighth generation of consoles, with an incredible open-world that is begging to be explored.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Bloodborne (92)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The joint highest-rated soulsborne game<\/a> on Metacritic alongside the PlayStation 5 remake of\u00a0Demon’s Souls,\u00a0<\/em>FromSoftware’s\u00a0Bloodborne<\/a>\u00a0 <\/em>took players to the Victorian-era inspired Yharnam.<\/p>\n

Bloodborne\u00a0<\/em>offered fans of the critically acclaimed\u00a0Dark Souls <\/em><\/a>series a more aggressive style of combat; FromSoftware accomplished this by removing shields from the game and putting firearm weaponry in its place. Furthermore, the game rewarded players with aggressive playstyles through its regenerating health mechanic, which would see the player regain lost health by successfully landing hits on enemies.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (93)<\/h2>\n

Successfully following the critically acclaimed\u00a0Uncharted<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>trilogy on the PlayStation 3 was never going to be easy, but Naughty Dog managed to exceed expectations\u00a0when they released\u00a0Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The fourth entry into the series differentiated itself from its predecessors with an extra focus on stealth gameplay, likely inspired by the developer’s\u00a0The Last of Us<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchise; as well as by giving the Indiana Jones-inspired\u00a0Nathan Drake a grappling hook to increase the speed of his movement.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (93)<\/h2>\n

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>released in the midst of the very public breakup between Konami and Kojima Productions. The breakup sadly led to the game not reaching its full potential, and Hideo Kojima even suggested that the game was unfinished.<\/a><\/p>\n

Despite the setback,\u00a0Metal Gear Solid V\u00a0<\/em>is still a fantastic game, exemplified by its whopping 93 Metascore. The game differentiated itself from its predecessors with its huge, beautifully designed open-world and base building mechanics that massively expanded on the base building in\u00a0Peace Walker<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

5 <\/span>The Last of Us Part II (93)<\/h2>\n

Naughty Dog’s follow up to the\u00a0critically acclaimed\u00a0The Last of Us\u00a0<\/em>was a surprising source of controversy after the game’s divisive story caused fans to review bomb the game on Metacritic. The scathing user reviews led to decisive action from the review aggregator, as they swiftly changed their site’s user score policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite the backlash,\u00a0The Last of Us Part II<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>won an eye-watering amount of awards, including Game of the Year from The Game Awards<\/a>, and Ultimate Game of the Year at the\u00a0Golden Joystick Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>God of War (2018) (94)<\/h2>\n

The eighth entry into the iconic\u00a0God of War<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series saw the franchise make numerous gameplay and stylistic changes. As well as shifting focus from Greek to Norse mythology,\u00a0God of War\u00a0<\/em>(2018) opened up the game’s traditional linear level design<\/a> to offer more free-roaming.<\/p>\n

Much like\u00a0The Last of Us Part II,\u00a0 <\/em>Santa Monica Studio’s\u00a0God of War\u00a0<\/em>picked up multiple Game of the Year awards. The Game Awards<\/a>, D.I.C.E. Awards<\/a>, and\u00a0SXSW Gaming Awards<\/a> all awarded the game with their top prize.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>The Last of Us Remastered (95)<\/h2>\n

Released at a time when it felt like almost\u00a0every new film, tv show, book, or video game had zombies or infected in it,<\/a> it’s safe to say that people weren’t too excited when the\u00a0Last of Us\u00a0<\/em>was first announced. Before\u00a0The Last of Us<\/em><\/a> had even released fans were dismissing the game, claiming that it was just an\u00a0Uncharted\u00a0<\/em>clone looking to cash-in on the zombie hype.<\/p>\n

As is often the case in the gaming industry, people were too quick to jump to a conclusion about an unreleased game, and their criticisms were soon silenced when The Last of Us<\/em>\u00a0hit stores in 2013. As well as its excellent stealth-action gameplay,\u00a0The Last of Us\u00a0<\/em>raised the bar for storytelling in video games, showing that mainstream audiences were ready for more mature and story-driven adventures<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, the success of\u00a0The Last of Us\u00a0<\/em>led to a PlayStation 4 remaster a few years later.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Grand Theft Auto V (97)<\/h2>\n

Originally released at the very end of the PlayStation 3’s cycle,\u00a0Grand Theft Auto V<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was brought to the PlayStation 4 with improved visuals and an alternative first-person playstyle.\u00a0The game offered one of the most beloved campaigns in the franchise’s history, as players took control of anti-heroes Trevor, Franklin, and Michael.<\/p>\n

Despite the game’s status as one of modern gaming’s best titles, it’s safe to say that there were a few moans and groans when the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S iteration was announced.\u00a0Grand Theft Auto VI\u00a0<\/em>will immediately become one of gaming’s most highly anticipated titles<\/a> when it is eventually announced, but with the success of\u00a0GTA V<\/em>‘s online mode, it may still be a few years before that day comes.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Red Dead Redemption 2 (97)<\/h2>\n

There may not have been a new\u00a0Grand Theft Auto\u00a0<\/em>game released during the eighth generation of home console, but there was a follow up to Rockstar’s critically acclaimed western\u00a0Red Dead Redemption<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Red Dead Redemption 2\u00a0<\/em>offered an incredible level of realism that was supplemented by one of Rockstar’s most well-written and well-performed stories to date. The game made an eye-watering\u00a0$725 million in its opening weekend<\/a>,\u00a0putting it close to\u00a0Grand Theft Auto\u00a0<\/em>V<\/em>‘s ridiculous opening weekend sum of $1 billion.<\/p>\n
