The penultimate episode of The CW’s Arrow<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0was designed as a backdoor pilot for\u00a0a\u00a0Green Arrow and the Canaries\u00a0<\/em>spin-off. However, the network has officially pulled the plug on the\u00a0Katherine McNamara-led\u00a0series after months of speculation regarding the future of the project.<\/p>\n

With Arrow<\/em> concluding its eight-season run after launching The CW’s lucrative Arrowverse<\/em> franchise<\/a>, the network began developing a female-led spin-off with\u00a0McNamara, Katie Cassidy, and Juliana Harkavy set to reprise their roles from the series. Directed by\u00a0Tara Miele from a script penned by a team of writers that included\u00a0Arrow<\/em> showrunner Beth Schwartz & co-creator\/executive producer Marc Guggenheim, the backdoor pilot for the spin-off was set in 2040 and found\u00a0McNamara’s Mia living a happy life\u00a0without the memories of her pre-crisis exploits. However, the disappearance of\u00a0Helena Bertinelli’s daughter Bianca prompts Cassidy’s\u00a0Laurel Lance and\u00a0Harkavy’s\u00a0Dinah Drake to recruit Mia on a mission to rescue Bianca, convincing her to assume to Green Arrow mantle from her late father Oliver Queen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the conclusion of Arrow<\/em>,\u00a0Guggenheim informed fans that a decision regarding whether or not The CW would pick up Green Arrow and the Canaries<\/em><\/a> would be announced in May 2020. However, months passed without an official update on the spin-off, leaving the future of the project in doubt. Now, Deadline<\/em> reports The CW has officially decided it will not move forward with the\u00a0Green Arrow and the Canaries\u00a0<\/em>spin-off,\u00a0<\/em>despite having once considered running the series\u00a0on the CW and HBO Max. The WarnerMedia streaming service\u00a0became the home of the network’s newer shows after its\u00a0output deal with Netflix ended.<\/p>\n

Fortunately for Arrow<\/em> fans, the legacy of the series will continue on The CW’s remaining DC shows. Actor\u00a0David Ramsey, who portrayed John Diggle on Arrow<\/em><\/a>, will reprise his role in Arrowverse shows\u00a0such as\u00a0Superman & Lois<\/em>, Supergirl<\/em>, The Flash,<\/em> and Batwoman<\/em>.\u00a0Furthermore, Ramsey will portray a ‘mystery character’ on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow<\/em>, which fans suspect could be Green Lantern considering Diggle was last seen on Arrow<\/em> moving to Metropolis after finding a green ring.<\/p>\n

In addition to the aforementioned Superman & Lois<\/em> series, The CW plans to expand the Arrowverse line-up with a Black Lightning<\/em> spin-off<\/a> centered on\u00a0Jordan Calloway’s Painkiller. Much like Green Arrow and the Canaries<\/em>, the Painkiller<\/em> series will launch with a backdoor pilot featured in the final season of its preceding show.<\/p>\n

Black Lightning<\/em> itself will conclude after four seasons<\/a>, just over a year after the series was officially integrated into the Arrowverse<\/em> by the events of the Crisis on Infinite Earths<\/em> crossover event. Until then, the Black Lightning<\/em>\u00a0showrunners envisioned\u00a0the\u00a0series as existing within its own universe and initially had no intention of connecting it to the Arrowverse.<\/p>\n

Arrow<\/em><\/strong> is currently available on Netflix.<\/p>\n
